Jumper clash fails

Can anyone explain to me why the GWS Giants are in their white clash jumper (also worn this finals series against Brisbane) against Richmond in the Grand Final today, when the Giants have twice played finals against the Sydney Swans in 2016 & 2018 with both sides wearing their traditional jumpers?

So a team wearing a mainly orange jumper clashes with a team wearing a black jumper with yellow sash, and a team wearing a maroon, royal blue and gold jumper, but there is no clash between two teams one of which has a red back jumper and the other an orange back jumper? The Swans vs. Giants is not a big clash like Hawthorn and the Brisbane Bears BB jumper in their early years or even Essendon vs. Melbourne, but there is a clash nonetheless.

i hate the Swans v Giants clash when both teams are wearing their home tops. It is a shocker and I love the fact that we wore out away top this year. I wish we get a chance to wear ours more often. The Giants dont when they play us though. Just one of those stupid inconsistent things. I know why they dont(white would make the clash worse) but still.....

I have said this a thousand times before. The AFL needs to fix its rules up and get some consistency. There are so many. Honestly, using the Giants as an example, they should have their home top, a lighter away top(like its white or even all Orange) and then 3rd top against us(all black back). i think any team which is half/half colours should have its normal top, then a lighter top and a darker top. Collingwood used to do this and it worked well. They had that darker number v North(and should be v Geelong), the normal home top and the white away top. All represent its club and the colour and uniform they wore in its history very well while doing the job of being different enough to not clash with anyone.

Yet Geelong would still insist on us wearing white shorts with that jumper...

Yes but to achieve this you need every club to have an essentially white or light strip

WC, Hawthorn, Adelaide, Brisbane, Gold Coast and Richmond have yellow in their existing colours, which can be used.

Geelong, Collingwood, GWS, Bulldogs, Port, North, Freo, St Kilda, Sydney and Carlton have white.

Leaving just Essendon and Melbourne. Who I’m sure can come up with something if the red doesn’t work in any cases. The Bulldogs, Adelaide, Gold Coast, Sydney and St Kilda also have red, which works in many cases against black or navy.

And West Coast, Gold Coast, North, Bulldogs, Brisbane and Port have (non navy) blue which can be effective if done properly against the right opponent. As can GWS’s orange.

So no, you don’t need each club to have a white jumper. You just need a sensible range of jumpers and then - where the AFL falls down - a policy to actually wear them.

To achieve the ‘clean’ look you need white

Way too many variables that you’ve mentioned

First you said white, then you said white or light, now you’re saying white again.

It can be done with a few jumper additions and a sensible mandate on shorts.

And a policy that actually puts it into action, ie in ALL games the away team will wear their jumper that most contrasts with the home team. That’s what happened yesterday.

White.
What else is light... yellow?

If you want to go down this path each club needs a distinct light strip or neutral 3rd colour

The inversion of the colours works on almost all guernseys. Alternatively, do something similar to what Melbourne do - in their case they switch the navy blue out for royal blue, to create an ideal clash top that actually has historical links to guernseys of the past.

Correct. Which is clearly possible in all cases without having to go down the “all white” path.

Combined with a sensible shorts rule (shorts match the predominant colour on the guernsey), it can work fine.

No deal
Away teams find another guernsey

Yeah white clash with white shorts
Richmond all black

If you want the ‘cleanest’ look

Pies should have been all white last year too
But there's nothing 'unclean' about black (which doesn't clash with royal) and white (which doesn't clash with royal.
Collingwood vs a team in all-royal is a game where they can wear whichever proportions of black OR white and the only issue is that many of us don't like the home with white shorts.

But you said earlier the light dark is the cleanest look
Royal v White better than Royal v Black

For the cleanest look it’s dark
Buuuuut it's not dark. You can't just make it dark for convenience. Otherwise Essendon Richmond Port and St Kilda have to wear clash vs WB and WC. Which is totally unnecessary.

Obviously a touchy subject, but all teams should have a third uniform that should be a different design and the primary colour should be a colour not used in either of their home or away/clash.

More clubs need to have away socks. Either inverse or go to a solid colour.

WCE/Rich should have yellow socks
Coll/Syd should have all white socks
Melb should have navy socks
