Yes, but how & in what way does the celebration of gambling, alcohol abuse & animal cruelty suck?....Straya mate.

Usually three stages of defence from the Craven Morehead types:

1) Love the horses
2) We'll I can't afford to keep them all alive
3) * YOU, PEOPLE EAT ANIMALS, WHO CARES, SOMETHING SOMETHING LEFT WING AGENDA

Look, I think you're missing the gist of Oz culture here....Getting 'munted' & 'maggoted' is the zenith state of down-under Nirvana.

Ethics of it aside, it's a s**t sport. Watching cars/people/horses run around in a circle isn't entertaining.

Well put....You have captured the absurdity of the sport far more eloquently with words, than any depiction could.

You know what?

I'm just astounded that a fully baked pot head, who has never worked in it's life, left it's last functioning neuron to faintly recall my name.

Parking the ethical question, as I get older it becomes more obvious that it's just an excuse to 'suit up' and get paralytic for people who don't happen to have a wedding to go to.

Like casinos, they market it as being an incredibly glamorous place to be, when in reality the general admission areas have more in common with the stabling yards than the glitzy private marquee parties.

You've got to hand it to them. Promoting these activities as the height of sophistication for centuries has to be one of most successful con jobs in the history of marketing.

But it's the 'Sport of Kings' mate, 'The Race that stops the nation'; A central plank in Melbourne's sporting superiority & identity as the home of big stuff.....This is no place for cynicism, citing propaganda & dissemination as a pure mask to cover over one ginormous excuse for a piss-up.....Straya!

I assume all of you, especially Victorians who are totally against horse racing, will protest by going to work on Tuesday.

You know the old chestnut about assuming....I'll be protesting in the same manner I always do....By not attending or watching the shize.

Given the feelings of many/most Australians on:
  • Christianity/organised religion of any kind
  • The Monarchy
  • The armed forces
  • Unions
  • The history of British colonisation in this country
I think you'd be hard pressed to find someone who is 100% behind all of those. I think I've been told what Boxing Day is for once upon a time, but I actually don't even remember what that's about.

4 out of 5 on that lot can go so far as I'm concerned.....Unions are our last tried & trusted Democratic check against the Robber Barons....They stay.

As a kid, I always thought boxing day was the day for - funnily enough - boxing.....As in the sporting kind....Cassius Clay versus Joe Frazier n all that.

Once that illusion was dispelled, I then thought maybe it had something to do with all the boxes that the Christmas gifts came in.....Put out your boxes day....LOL.

Whichever you particularly feel are right or wrong (I'm with you for the record), at their heart, they're all pretty polarising institutions and you'd be hard pressed to find a Christian monarchist unionist who loves the armed forces, the footy and the nags and doesn't think 26 Jan should at least be reconsidered as appropriate for our national day.

I've got nothing against Christianity or religion per se....But agree that once it becomes institutionalised, then the essential message & meaning becomes lost....Usually in a web of intrigue & power tropes.....2,000 years leaves a lot of time for corruption to take hold & set in....The RC Church is rotten to it's core.

You can't put formalisation & structure around true spiritual inspiration.

Getting new, 'cool' Pope Francis was - until the facade inevitably wore off - their smartest move in decades. Benedict XVI still alive 6 years after he quit for old man health reasons.
