News Conor McKenna tests positive for COVID-19 - Wait, what?

Corona virus kills people afl should have had the goolies to cancel season, but no, Gillon is piss weak.
Or play it in the COVID free states.

Gil the Dill says players health is a priority, then persists in playing most games in the state with the more community infections than the rest of the country combined.

I mentioned weeks ago this would likely occur unfortunately because selfishness has got in the way of common sense.

This will cost the AFL a motza.

Not disputing the idea or your friend's perspective but minimising risk is not really workable in a complete sense. If we adopted this approach we would never drive a car, get on a place, turn on a BBQ, use a knife and so on. There is always a judgment call on what the risk appetite is.

In fairness he wasn’t saying he would do that either. I asked him if you wanted to minimise as much risk as possible what would you do without shutting the whole thing down.

he is with me - bounce the ball

Because we really, really, really want to have footy, and it's better than nothing.
Not really though. The games this season have been largely terrible. Id have taken the year off and hopefully come back with a proper season in 2021.

One would think we miss the next 3 games minimum. Thats a lot of catch up and messing about of other teams' fixtures.

Starting the comp up before all states were reporting no new cases for 21 days min was fraught with risk.

you trust the WHO? Interesting

Studies are still being done. Many have contradicted each other. The simple fact is we know very little about this virus.

What I am saying is what you do to minimise as much risk as possible. That’s the medical view.

my personal view is let it rip and deal with the sick. But I’m not a doctor so...

This is Scarface the US rapper who is in his forties with no underlying health issues. He had a case of coronavirus and as a result of that his kidneys do not work and he has to have all of the blood in his body replaced twice a week for the rest of his life.

I really think public health should come before AFL football in regards to covid-19 .But thats just my opinion

Well the AFL season shouldn't have begun if that's what we're going with.

The incubation period of the virus means the time it takes for the onset of symptoms after exposure. It doesn't mean the time it takes for a test to return positive. Again, if we're going to doubt the actual accuracy of the test, then there's no point in testing.

The players are already self-isolating for 48 hours. That should be enough.

They'll trace who had contact with Connor McKenna for sure and take the necessary measures. The AFL are acting on the Department on Health's advice.
Lol, players will need to self isolate for 2 weeks.

no mate it doesn’t. It means there are not enough antibodies (think this is the correct term might be wrong) in your body to trigger a positive

The throat swab test (PCR) checks for 2 specific genes in the virus itself (if it only detects one, the test is inconclusive, which perhaps is what happened with McKenna). A blood test checks for antibodies (you have those, you definitely have it). In both cases, the load may not be high enough to trigger (especially true with the PCR), but this would also mean it would be difficult for the virus to transmit to another person.

I believe the AFLPA refused to have everything done outside Vic. The AFLs preference in April was Darwin for all 18 clubs. AFLPA killed it

Tend to agree, Adelaide, Darwin, Brisbane and Hobart should have been host cities for matches.

difficult and much less likely but not impossible

Then the players are sacrificing most of their salaries because less games means less monies.

Extremely selfish & a strong leader would have made better decisions.

nope. My best mate is. A very very good one. Called him as soon as I read the tweet and said explain this to me

AFL may not fellow best practice. That is based on eliminating as much risk as possible. Doesn’t mean the AFL has to do that

Comical

I'm wondering HOW he got it.

They said he must have got it in the last week. But where was he? Aren't AFL players under stricter orders than everyone else? In terms of.. literally no human contact at all, except with close family?

Problem with that is, how careful are those close family members being? They may have a missus who goes out in the community to work or do shopping and so on. They may have kids who are going to school or daycare. Its impossible to realistically say that they aren't still exposed to it, even just being around their closest family.

So what happens with the Ess v Melb game? It gets played during the week? 2 points each? 4 points to Melb because Essendon?
All things equal, and no more cases going fwd, there will be a bye week scheduled when they play it.
Or they will get a Thursday night one week, tuesday night next and sunday the week after To catch up

You'd think either a delay to the game or forfeit from Essendon. Unfair on Melbourne to share points

it is a debacle and handled very poorly by the AFL. You are right this was always going to happen.
