News Conor McKenna tests positive for COVID-19 - Wait, what?

No. Antibody tests only recently became available, and is only used tell determine historical infection.

They take a swab, you cannot do an antibody test on a swab

It's a PCR test, and it doesn't depend on individual body responses. Virus DNA is detectable, or not. So it is black and white.

If only it was that simple:

"In a routine request to exclude relevant viral hemorrhagic fevers in a hospitalized patient we received serum to run PCRs for EBOV, LASV and YFV. Usually these requests are urgent, due to the public health precautions potentially required for highly contagious patients. RNA was extracted from serum using the Viral RNA Mini Kit to which the Internal Control (IC) provided with the RealStar® Filovirus Screen RT-PCR Kit 1.0 (altona Diagnostics) was added according to the manufacturer’s instructions. As negative control, Fetal Calf Serum (FCS) was extracted and spiked with the IC in parallel. We performed the EBOV PCR using the Filovirus Screen Kit, obtaining a negative result within 2 h. The IC showed perfect amplification curves with similar Cq values of about 31 for the clinical sample as well as for the FCS control, thus confirming successful extraction and RT-PCR reaction and also ruling out sample-specific PCR inhibition. In parallel, we set up in house one-step RT-PCRs for the detection of YFV and LASV using published assays [4], [5]. For these assays we routinely use a basic one-step RT-PCR reaction mix from manufacturer A. Both assays were set up in parallel using the same aliquot of water and reaction mix and were run in parallel on the same Applied Biosystems 7500 Real-Time PCR Instruments. The sample was negative for YFV with perfectly fine amplification curves for the positive control (in vitro transcribed RNA). In contrast, the LASV assay did not show any amplification, neither for the sample nor for the positive control. Even on an agarose gel no amplification of the positive control could be shown. Since these results could not be explained easily, we started troubleshooting"

"Large-scale testing for SARS-CoV-2 by the reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction is a key part of the response to the COVID-19 pandemic, but little attention has been paid to the potential frequency and impacts of false positive results. In the absence of data on the clinical specificity of SARS-CoV-2 assays, we estimate a conservative false positive rate from external quality assessments of similar viral assays, and show that this rate may have large impacts on the reliability of positive test results. This has clinical and case management implications, affects an array of epidemiological statistics, and should inform the scale of testing and the allocation of testing resources. Measures to raise awareness of false positives, reduce their frequency, and mitigate their effects should be considered."

" Polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and reverse transcription PCR (RT-PCR) offer an extremely high level of sensitivity, and as such, are suitable as diagnostic assays for viral and bacterial pathogens, as well as for genetic testing applications. However, given the high sensitivity of these techniques, there is the risk of false positive results (detection of non-targeted sequences) and false negative results (failure to detected targeted sequences). Fortunately, there are many ways to reduce the risk of false positives and false negatives to ensure more accurate results."

Was bound to happen eventually with half the competition based in a state that had no real chance of eliminating it.

It's also a pretty bad look for the AFL to have a player traveling overseas amidst a global "Do Not Travel" warning from DFAT.

Season becomes even more farcical as a result. This match gets postponed until ??? - screws up other parts of the fixture (feel bad for Melbourne if this match is forced to slot into a weekday to meet the tight schedule.) That's not accounting for any major spread amongst the rest of the Essendon squad, knocking them all out for at least two weeks.

He went early February. There was no pandemic declared then, there was no do not travel warning.

For those interested in things other than potting Victoria or Essendon;

Timeline on McKenna:
- Tested Wed
- Result back Fri am - negative
- Completed main contact training Fri am
- Tested on Fri pm
- Arrived at club today am
- Informed 15-20mins after arrival that Fri test was ‘irregular’ and not to train
- Tested again
- Result today pm - positive
Nah not interested.

We definitely should be potting Victorians, you would have seen the bogans clustering in the shopping malls in the last month as I have.
Not to mention the demonstrations.
Crazy behaviour, second wave was inevitable imo.

How many times do experts have to debunk the shopping centre panic bs before everyone stops bangin on about it? Chances are so low due to you momentarily passing them. You'd have to be unlucky enough to walk past/behind them just as they coughed/whatever. It's momentary passing.

Season won't get cancelled unless this actually snowballs. Other leagues have experienced this and gone on. Too much money and time have been invested to go home after one case.

If one was all it took I doubt the AFL would've opened up the shop again.

They would have modelled something for this eventuality.

So why hasn't the Vic Government chucked a hissy fit presser over this like they do with school positives or protester positives, amazingly silent so far.

Under the rules wouldn't this rule out Essendon for two weeks while their players are ordered to self isolate for 14 days, i mean we had Jenny and Brett pleading with BLM protesters to self isolate for 14 days just in case.

But something tells me rules are going to be bent for this and come tuesday or wednesday everything is going to be hunky doory nothing to see here hahahaha.

Yerp reckon she’s just about all over folks..., the best part the AFL f**ked themselves over!
Oh well off for a night out in public in beautiful, covid clean WA👍

ps think there’s a few Victorians on here owe our esteemed leader Mr McGowan an apology!!
we were looking pretty good for a time there.
Got lazy and let people in and let them mingle.

???? There have been no hissy fits over school positives. In fact quite the opposite, they have explained that the kid has caught it at home and hasn't spread it at school.

Does everyone think the Premier League won’t have a positive test? Of course they will and the season will go on....that’s in a country with one of the worst death rates in the world. Cancel season my arse

Given Victoria's dismal COVID-19 situation who would want to go to Victoria or even play a Vic team... time to cancel the rest of the season which is so compromised it's ridiculous.
Perhaps the non-Victorian teams play each other twice & the Victorians can do their own thing with the last non-covid team standing... ;)

Uuhhh, how do they know? Victoria is a basket case and people criticise McGowan's approach!!
How do they know? Because there have been no cases of kids contracting it at school. All cases have been confirmed from households. My post nor the one I was responding to were anything to do with WA or McGowan, not sure why you are bringing that up.
