This. Why does the AFL keep forcing changes? Is footy such a bad game?

Don't copy the NFL where the NFL is bad. You will only be even worse.

If footy needs to change anything, it should be for making it simpler. Let the game develop on its own, just making small common-sensical adjustments from time to time.

Keep 18v18, make it a 6-player bench, and set a limit of 18 interchanges per quarter. This would give coaches plenty to think about.

Forbid marks from backward kicks unless in F50. It will help the flow of the game.

Address the greatest elephant in the room: umpiring inconsistency. Be open about the problem and deal with it.

Rankine 3 games. I love Rozee but opposition supporters aren’t tuning in just to see what Rozee does next.
If he was hyped half as much last year they would have been.

Rankine is a media narrative that helps the QLD focussed season storyline.

Crows fans are annoying, but even I would rather live in the same state as them than be in a covid infested state like Victoria (which also features Eddie McGuire).
Or you could just ship the crow fans to Victoria instead.

Brisbane has been dealt a blow with ruckman Stef Martin to be sidelined for a significant amount of time after scans revealed a stress fracture in his back.

Brisbane Lions’ premiership hopes have suffered a blow, with ruckman Stefan Martin to be sidelined for several weeks with a stress fracture in his back.
Martin, 33, had been set to line-up on Sunday against his former club Melbourne at Metricon Stadium.
But having been unable to move freely at training during the Lions’ two-week stay in Sydney, Martin went for scans on Thursday, with results revealing the stress fracture.
Martin is expected to miss up to eight weeks of football, with the Lions hoping to have him back in time for their finals assault.

They need to explain decisions and non-decisions alike. It can be internally. I don't mind. They need to deal with inconsistency. The games seem to be randomly umpired.

Funny enough, HTB was one of the most consistent calls. Since the AFL tried to change the interpretation, nobody knows what is HTB anymore. They've created an issue where there was none.

Have you watched many old games Gremio? From say 2004 or earlier? The game can be so much better than it is when the ball moves freely and players have the time and space to execute their skills.

I accept the argument that the game evolves and you can't undo much of the defensive revolution, but there has to be some way to balance the ledger at least halfway back to attack.

I have had this conversation on soccer so many times, you all have no idea. I feel back in the 90's.

I'm not a fan of making life easier for players. I like high-pressure tactics, as much as I like teams and players capable of beating it.

Defenses are innocent. Good defense IS good footy. High scoring games can be also boring as hell. After all, bad defenses are bad footy. That's not the issue.

It's not that we are watching defensive footy. We are watching bad footy — both offensively and defensively. That's the problem.

Are you saying that pre-2004 'soccer' was not as defensive a game? I may have mis-interpreted that.

2 obvious ways to make this happen.

1) Return the glove so big exciting key forwards can mark the ball more easily.

2) Introduce an old NBA style zone defence ban. If you're marking space and not a player, it's a free kick against. An almost unfathomable change, but the game has basically morphed into it's current for because of professional level strategy and team defence, so let's ban team defence entirely. You'd immediately see the return of good teams scoring 100 points every single week, and you'd probably see the return of the odd 100 goal forward as well.

In 2019, 1 side scored of 2000 points for the season, Brisbane with 2004 points. In 2000 it was 13 sides, all but 3. The highest scoring team scored 2816 points.

Having the umpires miked up does him no favours. It's been one of the worst innovations in footy coverage in the last 20 years.

I wish we were given the option on telecasts of being able to switch off the umpires, and/or switch off the commentators and just have the crowd noise for atmosphere

This season doesn’t count, but yeah, we should get the #1 draft pick’ says Crows flog

crows-fan-ladder.jpg

DAN SCHMIDT
A casual Adelaide Crows fan and therefore an AFL expert on twitter has voiced his opinion online about the 2020 season and the 2021 AFL draft.
With the South Australian AFL sides sitting at polar opposites of the ladder, Twitter user @The119thMan proclaimed to his 32 followers this week that this season doesn’t count, because of the altered schedule and game times, so if Port Adelaide Football Club (est. 1996) win the Premiership, it definitely doesn’t count.
However, due to the Crows’ dismal performance this year, @The119thMan still believes the Crows are entitled to the #1 draft pick, which they will most likely use to pick up a homesick Victorian prospect.
“Did you know that the Crows could technically snag three of the top six draft picks? This is great for us, because deliberately finishing bottom in a season that doesn’t count gives us a good chance to rebuild” tweeted @The119thMan.
Despite no likes, retweets or replies on his tweets, he then continued to tweet to nobody particular, “And for all you Power ferals saying this is your year, you know deep down that it’s not real. Who knows how well the Crows would have done if it was an actual season with full length quarters?” along with a GIF that made about as much sense as his argument.
“Can’t wait to see all these Power fans shook when we pick up the great draft picks we’ve earnt, they’ll join some of our more senior members, some of whom I can definitely name without looking at Google. #gocrows” concluded the flog.

Editor’s note: We completely agree with the above statements. Best of luck striving for the 2020 AFL Premiership*, Port.

I'm with GremioPower on this one. It's probably our similar backgrounds but I hate the constant messing with the rules to "improve" the sport. I grew up watching actual football (what some of you heathens call soccer). And there were always fast, attacking teams and defensive, negative teams. In many cases that would depend on historical traits/culture, sometimes on their situation at that time (e.g. trying to avoid relegation) and sometimes due to the influence of a particular coach. But there was variety and you pretty much knew what to expect from each team. Some games you will go against a more attacking team and it would end up in a high scoring game. Sometimes you knew you were going into a defensive shitfest and the challenge was to try to score at least once to win the game. etc. etc. you get the idea.

While it's nice to see some scoring, defense is an important, if not the most important, part of any similar sport. I personally find shoot outs and 110-100 type scorelines super boring. Basically, go back to the centre and take your chance to score. That's probably why I could never get into basketball. I found the 2005 Sydney Swans premiership team fascinating. I had absolutely no issues with their tactics. Trying to kill individuality and get everyone to play in the same way in a game of kick and giggle is very 2020s but not everyone wants to see the same tactics replicated across 18 teams.

tl;Dr: stop messing with the game!

Soccer is nowhere near as bad to watch when it's defensive. The game is so much cleaner, more structured and less cluttered. There's a reason they call it the beautiful game.

The defensive crap we see in our game is not good to watch. It's low skill, scrappy, error ridden rubbish. It's players picking up the ball, dropping the ball, scrap kick along the ground to an opponent, high kick back towards the boundary line, over and out. It's absolutely boring and our game can be so much better than that.

Its time to umpire by drone.
1. One or 2 drones
2. 3 adjudicators isolated fron each other in the stands monitoring via drone
3. Three big red buttons; one for each adjudicator
4. A potential free arises: adjudicator presses big red button.
5. 3/3 big red lights activated on the scoreboard = free given
6. 2/3 big red lights activated on scoreboard = free given
7. 1/3 big red lights activated on scoreboard = no free given
8. Play stops when free is given by activating a siren on drone
9. Field umpire in earpiece contact with chief adjudicator awards free.
10. The end of Razor Ray's omnipotence

Obviously complications to be worked out.
May need 2 big buttons per adjudicator - one for each team.
