If this was the NBA we’d be getting everyone. Pretty much the motto around the NBA for players and media is “get your money while you can” and that’s accepted as fine, in the AFL there’s a lot more of an emphasis on success even if it’s sacrificing a lot of money. I guess it’s a good thing but for our current spot and the last few years it’s been a really bad thing.

I'm guessing even NBA players will make some decisions for team success though?

Can't imagine they all want to be making megabucks but getting thrashed year upon year.

Did you smugly dismiss fans that questioned the merit of using Pick 16 on Durdin & Pick 25 on Nielson back in 2014 as well?

Why is our 2014 drafting relevant? It's a completely different team running the show now, who have shown even from last draft in which we had 3 second rounders, that they know what they're doing.

FWIW drafting three speculative KPD's in the one draft was catastrophic and pretty much sums up why we are in such a dire position from a list perspective.

For starters, I wouldn't be turfing quality players like Ben Brown, Polec & Higgins for speculative late first/early second round picks. What benefit does that do for our future?

I've watched this club blow basically every late first/early second round pick on duds like Ryan Bastinac, Aaron Black, Kieran Harper, Brad McKenzie, Taylor Garner, Mason Wood, Sam Durdin, Daniel Nielson, Gavin Urquhart, Matt Riggio, Chad Jones, Callum Urch etc. for the best part of 2 decades.

Just put aside the ego clashes and keep the experience - I don't want to run the club into the ground because we rolled the dice on the next Kieran Harper.

Last two drafts were (Mahony, Perez, Comben) and (Thomas, Taylor, and Scott). That's 3 rising star nominations for last year. Mahony looks like he belongs already at AFL level and the initial view of Perez also looks good.

Then the draft before that was LDU, Walker, Xerri, and Hayden. LDU and Hayden look like they belong. Walker has looked good when on the park, and Xerri looks likely post Goldstein.

The last 3 years have been close to perfect hits on every selection.

I told you? Make it work with Ben Brown & Polec - keep them on the list to help the young guys develop.

Second round picks are useless to North Melbourne.

You don't know what we will get for Brown and Polec or whether the situation with either or both is reconcilable.

Regardless, the list we have is a bottom 4-6 list. No amount of development will allow it to contend without vast changes.

We were saying the same things in the couple of years after we drafted Black, Bastinac, Harper, Anthony etc too though.

Last couple of drafts are looking promising but realistically we won't know whether they will actually get us back into contention for a few years yet.

Women 🤦‍♂️😬 And If you need to choose one , do you go the attractive option(s) or the not so attractive but wealth option.

Or the German , or Italian or PT option or the 12 years your junior option 🤦‍♂️.
Or just stay single option ?

Naturally, all of the above ;)

You honestly should stick to South American (ass) & Italians (cooking and ‘skills’).

No amount of money is worth it if you feel ill.

Fantastic post
Probably needs to have its own thread to discuss.
I mentioned in the draft thread that if we fu** this up and end up in the wilderness for more than a year or two then the jungle drums will start beating for us to relocate to Tassie.

There is so much more on the line than people realise.

Dude, how is it any different to any other year?

We may as well attempt to put ourselves in a position (that’s all this shit really is - there are no guarantees in life) to have a multiple cracks at Flags over a 5-7 year time frame.

When you can’t attract A-grade talent from other clubs, you have to hit the draft.

Spot on. Some smart arse bumped the "How's your lid" thread, just look how bullish we were about Black, Wood, Harper and Garner among others.
It looks promising right but we have to wait and see.

How can we definitively say that yet?

What elite traits does Jack Mahony have exactly? We haven't even seen Comden yet.
Perez looks promising, but yeah its still early.

They also traded out the pick that was used on this year's Rising Star winner.

Brady Rawlings hasn't earnt my blind faith yet and I am rightfully apprehensive on trading out our proven stars for draft picks in the 18-40 range which history shows to be a significant gamble - especially in a year with no Victorian Under 18 form to go off.

Def agree with Polec we need to make that work.... Ben brown I'm not sure about... he was pretty ave in 2019 as were a lot.... but not sure if he is now beyond his best or defenders know how he plays and so have eliminated his threat or if this year was an aberration and he flies next year.... really not sure

Who is your gripe with?

Despite lots of opinion, you do realise the BigFooty Board doesn't actually make the trades?

Jack & Flynn both showed really positive signs at senior level this year. Pretty clear that Jack has some great tools, are they AFL elite? That remains to be seen. Comben we haven't seen yet, however the club rates him the highest of the 3 so I'm optimistic.

I think it's healthy to be apprehensive about trading senior players for picks. Equally I trust our new team of football department staff that they aren't going to let them walk for peanuts, and that whatever picks they agree to in a trade, that they will use to bring in more quality youth.

Some pretty narrow minded views in here regarding recruitment.

If taking on the contract of some spud who has no right to be in the AFL system gets us an extra first round selection then it's a no brainer.

And all this talk about "I don't want them pulling on the North jumper".... Please

I'd buy a North Melbourne Lingerie calendar staring Caroline Wilson for a pick in the 30's

I don't care if they bring in Led Boots Willy or Noskills McCantkick if it improves our draft hand

At best offer Brown a 1 year deal to make him a RFA. The contract clubs offer him will be bigger giving us a compo pick or both parties have the option to carry on.

The club has decided that we really don't want to be a middling team for the next 10 years, like we have been for the previous 10. I will overlook the 10 before that as survival was the main agenda item. The fact that we actually had a top 4 finish was remarkable.

Yep it risky, but the pay off could be huge or we could look like dills. If we continue to middle, there'll be no pay off, we'll just look like dills.

That's brutal.

I am just concerned about the direction the club is going and the risks we are taking - the upside of moving Brown, Higgins & Polec seems minimal right now.

If moving all 3 of them resulted in an extra pick inside the top 5, then yeah I would be happy with that result. That outcome just doesn't seem realistic though.

I reckon another 10 years of finishing 10th is riskier.
