Over 95 percent of players were national draftees.

Yes you are correct, but they are just foot-soldiers for most teams. If you look at the top 5 teams, 90% are well-drilled seasoned roleplayers who are trained to be perfect. The other 10% are game-breakers who are special players.

Draftees are completely speculative. Most are completely equal to one another in stats (without taking physical size into account) - i.e. they are virtually all a 6-7 out of 10. Some increase this in and end up being alot better based on the environment they end up in. Dustin Martin, pretty much a 9/10 player would have been a 7/10 if he went to that basket case Melbourne in 2010. He would probably have washed out of the game. He nearly did at Richmond and they had to fire Daniel Connors for being a bad influence on him.

The idea to poach players who have proven themselves is a solid one. They may be older, but you know what you're getting.

That Richmond team that flogged us in the GF only had Nankervis, Prestia and Lynch.

Everyone else in that team was drafted, most of them as young players through the ND.
I don't think I'm truly expressing my point correctly.

95% of players as Seeds pointed out were draftees. It's the environment and training program that makes an average draftee a veteran and highly capable player. You think that Jack Higgins would be any good in most other teams apart from Richmond?

At the time, Caddy was fairly average for us and wanted to be a midfielder. Put him in Richmond's program with his best mate, close to his family, and suddenly he loves being a forward and is instrumental.

I'm just trying to say that I prefer seeing a player in the system for a few years before making judgement/poaching them. We think too highly of our hit or miss draftees in their first few years.

Nah. He's the same. Not really a mid, not really a forward. Wish we'd stop picking these sort of players.
Actually nowhere even the raw talent of those 2 players.
He actually is a mid. We just misused him.

Fire sale on Geelong first-round picks over the years. Cocky and Fog gone for a couple of bags of chips. In Cockatoo's case it was understandable. This guy really did look good in his first season and even this year looked to be coming along. Now he's gone for an... 8-pick second-round upgrade and a third-round pick we won't use. Not much of a draft for us with him and Kelly both gone now.
Only one of those is first round picks though, so not sure one first round pick being traded makes a fire sale

this bloke any good?
Chuck him in the guts and let him do his thing around the contest & in clearance situations

If Carlton stick him on the HFF or forward pocket, then you'll likely get frustrated as that's not really his thing, and questionable if you'll get the best from him in those positions

Disappointing result all round. Showed some early ability, then had a great game V Kangaroos this year. Given little opportunity in his favoured position.

Not great on any level this from Geelong. Bad pick, poorly managed and given away for nothing.

But I won’t lose sleep over it. Such is the modern game.

Yes he is.
If he is then we have been utterly stupid in trading him for virtually nothing whilst contracted.

Remember we wanted to keep Lang. He left us. In this case we have kicked fogarty out the door for nothing despite all the cards in our hand. Club clearly rated lang higher. Smedts was more talented then both but injuries cruelled him.

To put a Carlton slant on it - a very very very very poor mans Marc Murphy

As others have said - his kicking is an issue - both technique and distance - and he isnt quick

The only glint of hope - when played in the midfield for a game or 2 this year - he has got quick hands - so he can get the ball out to someone - a bit like say Cunnington of NM ( no where near as good obviously ) - but that type of player - is his main chance to make it as an AFL player

Lang played 20 games for Carlton. Smedts 9. All I’m saying is Fogarty will better both of those because he’s a better player.

We may have held the cards, but Geelong rarely keep a player (contacted or not) who has asked out of the club

Constable is contracted but the club was happy for him to explore his options - unlike Cockatoo & Fogarty though, there's no interest in Constable
