Are we remiss not to considering making a massive play for McDonald should he slip to 5?

Yes it would probably cost overs (12 + Future first Min) and we have limited draft capital but surely the Hawks are being sounded out.

I'm sure we'd try.
But put it this way, why would Hawthorn prefer that to just getting Mcdonald?

They have 17 players out of contract next season and are trying to rebuild, adding an extra first round pick next season might be more attractive than one player this season.

Liam Kolar looks like a great late pick at 195 cm. His vertical leap, speed, endurance and vertical leap are rated as elite. Liam Mcmahon is in a similar boat.

Chery WA today

14. Fremantle
Brayden Cook (medium forward)
South Adelaide/Happy Valley FC, 189cm, 80kg

The Dockers enter the draft a bit later than their ladder position would have otherwise dictated after Carlton's early bid on Liam Henry last year sent Fremantle into deficit. Freo have shown a liking to Finlay Macrae and shown interest in Luke Pedlar but Cook is tipped by industry insiders to be the man here after a terrific season in which he averaged two goals and 18 disposals per game in the SANFL's under-18s competition. It looks a good fit given Fremantle have plenty of good pressure forwards but could do with a sharp finisher.
15. Port Adelaide (matching Greater Western Sydney's bid)
Lachie Jones (medium defender)
Woodville-West Torrens/Bute Paskville FC, 186cm, 89kg

In an open draft Jones might have been picked a bit earlier and it wouldn't be a shock if another club bid as early as Essendon with one of their trio of selections. Port have been hoping a bid would come as late as possible, and any further would be getting a touch ridiculous for the next generation academy player who played in an SANFL premiership side this year and has the build to make an instant impression in an already strong Power side.
16. Greater Western Sydney
Bailey Laurie (small forward/midfielder)
Oakleigh Chargers/Beverley Hills/Caufield Grammar, 179cm, 78kg

Having lost Zac Langdon and Jye Caldwell, the Giants could do with some replenishment of their small stocks. They have long been heavily linked to Laurie who is a canny footballer with plenty of endurance. Rivals also viewed Richmond as interested in Laurie so it would be worth GWS' while to strike.

17. Collingwood
Nik Cox (tall defender/forward)
Northern Knights/Montmorency FC/Ivanhoe Grammar, 200cm, 87kg

The Pies have signalled a need to bolster their tall stocks and it is widely expected they will take a key position player with one of their two selections in this range. It wouldn't shock if Cox went as early as one of Essendon's early picks but if not he should slide and appears likely to be snapped up by the Magpies.

18. Greater Western Sydney
Luke Pedlar (medium forward/midfielder)
Glenelg/ Kingston/ PAC, 183cm, 80kg

Midfielders simply aren't a priority for the Giants who have been chastened by the repeated exits of young onballers including the recent examples of Jye Caldwell and Jackson Hately. But Pedlar has an extra string to his bow as a forward and impressed this year after overcoming a shoulder reconstruction. Geelong and Adelaide are others strongly linked to him.

19. Collingwood

Conor Stone (medium forward/defender)
Oakleigh Chargers/St Kevin's College, 189cm, 83kg

Stone is versatile and renowned for his ball use and decision making. The Giants have shown some interest too but the Pies are keen with rivals expecting them to pounce here. Collingwood's selections will be a big watch this space on draft night given the machinations of a potential bid on McInnes and a possible trade up. Collingwood had been linked with a bid on Brisbane academy forward Blake Coleman but that increasingly looks unlikely at this still early stage of the draft.
20. Collingwood (matching bid from Richmond)
Reef McInnes (tall midfielder/defender)
Oakleigh Chargers/Surrey Park FC/Scotch College, 193cm, 86kg

This would be a terrific result for Collingwood after a wretched off-season. The Crows, Bombers and perhaps the Kangaroos loom as threats earlier in the first round but if they don't pounce McInnes could slide through the teens and land after the Magpies' first two selections. There is also talk the Tigers could bid on Swans academy small Errol Gulden here. The Tigers have also been linked to Laurie, but it would also be no surprise if Richmond looked to trade out their selection here, with clubs including Geelong and West Coast both looking to trade into the first round according to industry sources. Rivals have indicated the Cats could bid on Connor Downie, while Luke Pedlar is another player in whom they've shown interest.
21. Richmond
Tom Powell (midfielder)
Sturt/Scotch College (SA), 183cm, 74kg

The South Australian was something of a bolter this year, returning from injury to dominate at South Australian under-18 level. He is the son of former Crows player Matt Powell. It wouldn't be a shock if he was already gone though, in which case Finlay Macrae would be tempting if not taken earlier. Powell could easily be snapped up already by North too, in which case it would be Archie Perkins who could well slide down the order.
22. Melbourne

Max Holmes (wingman)
Sandringham Dragons/East Malvern/Melbourne Grammar, 189cm, 74kg

The Dees have been keen for more run, targeting Isaac Smith as a free agent, and appear increasingly likely to pounce on Holmes, the son of dual Olympian and Commonwealth Games gold medallist Lee Naylor. Melbourne have also been linked to possible bids on academy Errol Gulden (Sydney) and Blake Coleman (Brisbane).
23. Melbourne
Ryan Angwin (medium forward/defender)
Gippsland Power/Foster FC, 184cm, 72kg

Beyond the top 20 the draft appears to open up considerably. Another perceived bolter, Angwin is a beautiful left-foot kick who could help the Dees by providing another creative ball user to what still looks a blue-collar outfit at times. Meanwhile rival clubs expect Melbourne, along with Adelaide, to consider trading a second-round selection.

24 Hawthorn (matching bid from Greater Western Sydney)
Connor Downie (wingman)
Eastern Ranges/Vermont FC, 185cm, 82kg

Of Chinese descent, Downie is a member of the Hawks' next generation academy. Ideally Hawthorn would love for him to slip a few places back and slip beyond their second pick but the Giants are keen on a player with renowned leadership abilities and who is a good mate of Bailey Laurie. Geelong have also shown an interest in Downie.
25 Greater Western Sydney
Jake Bowey (small midfielder/forward)
Sandringham Dragons/Highett FC, 175cm, 67kg

The son of former St Kilda player Brett Bowey, Jake is similarly diminutive but has pace and is elusive. The Giants are fans while Brisbane have also been linked. St Kilda are in this neck of the woods but have a lot of this sort of player already.
26 St Kilda
Jack Carroll (midfielder)
East Fremantle/Geraldton, 187cm, 76kg

Melbourne and Essendon have also been linked to Carroll who is a tidy left-footer who can break the lines. The Saints have added plenty of midfielders in recent years but not too many via the draft so while they could do with talls Carroll looks a good fit.

I miss having that journo who went to work for the giants, Emma Quayle wasn't it? She was right so often with her draft predictions she basically took the anxiety away.
Twomey ain't as good.
Twomey definitely has sources at many clubs but Freo certainly ain't one.

To be fair when Quayle was in her pomp it was easier with less NGA, points calculus and pick swapping

Ok that's not how I read this...

The minimum list size for each club will be 37, which can be made up by as little as 36 senior listed players and one rookie.

To reach 44, clubs can carry 36-38 senior listed players, four-to-six Category A rookies and two Category B rookies.

edit - obviously depends if the 36-38 is related to the 4-6. So hard to find something clear about this.
Baldwin and Cook?
I can live with Brayden cook as our 1st rounder. He has talent. As I said can be another Hayden Crozier or Tom Sheridan or Cameron Sutcliffe. Which is a solid forward/back flanker or winger

Can take a risk with Baldwin at pick 32. Could be the next Jack Darling or cam McCarthy or Brennan Cox or could be injury prone like Apeness or Gumbleton
Baldwin as a rookie sounds nice or if we are unlucky enough for a bid to come pre 32 then with our last pick.
again...... Kaine Baldwin did his knee in April this season. If he didn't do his knee, easily would of been a 1st rounder
Ha. Possibly for the best. Not many of us expected we would draft Caleb Serong.
most of us knew Freo would get Henry.

Didn't think Caleb Serong would make it to our pick 7 or 8.

Would personally do our future 1st and this years for Hawks if it meant getting McDonald in a heartbeat, which probably means Hawks will laugh at us offering it
I would never do that under any circumstances. If we do that, you know what the worst case scenario would be?.

Hawks nail their 2 1st rounders on the way to another flag 4-6 years down the road.

Logan McDonald has an injury riddled career at Freo. That would be the typically Docker style luck.

That would be a Dockery thing to do

Draft Breakdown:

Remember that surplus points in the first round don't give you another pick back, they are held as extra for later bids either this draft or subsequent drafts.

Our #32 will be pushed back by at least three academy bids prior to the Walker bid, potentially six, then brought in by up to three picks.

So let's say #35 at the time of the bid. That's worth 522 points, which covers pick #27. It almost covers pick #26 but we are 10 points short - so our pick #47 (at the time of bid) would be burned as well. We would have 306 points in surplus, meaning we can cover a bid at #36 on Western for free, then use our remaining pick #47 (previously #48 before the bid match) on whoever we want.

In an easier to read format (using our current picks for reference):
Fremantle use pick #15
Walker bid at #16 will use up our #32, #55 & #56 picks (surplus of 286 points)
Walker bid between #17 and #26 will use up our #32 and #55 picks. (surplus ranging from 18 to 306 points)
Walker bid between #27 and #35 will use up our #32 pick (surplus ranging from 16 to 177 points) (providing a new pick for us from #73 to #58)
Fremantle use pick #35
Walker bid between #36 and #46 will use up our #55 pick (surplus ranging from 11 to 197 points) (providing a new pick for us from #73 to #56)
Fremantle use pick #47
Fremantle use pick #48

These are my numbers worked out with JUH bid on at #1, Campbell at #5, Jones at #10

I'm expecting that our pick #63 will be our last pick in the draft after #15, 2x matched bids (picks #35, #47 and #48 will allow us to match bids at #25 and #26) and then #52 (which was #63) at the end.

It will mean we have the pick right after West Coast.

Twomey ain't as good.

Twomey was pretty good last year up to about pick 15 and then still got plenty correct after that. Just stuffed up Sydney's first pick, who obviously put out misinformation, and didn't predict Carlton would have a hissy fit and bid on Henry.

I think we'll see a lot more bidding this year to make clubs pay for their players.

Reckon a bit has been swept under the rug for SOS using that “dummy” bid on Henry. I don’t regret but we paid overs there for SOS being petty ( no wonder he lost his job). If it was the other way around there would have been an uproar from Vic media. I look forward to the day we return the favour for Carlton

Worst case scenario is a silly way to look at it. Best case scenario is we get Josh Kennedy and Hawks get two duds. I would easily pay two picks in the terms for a young WA KPF
