Ed doesn’t finish top 3 in our best and fairest year after year for nothing, we have no one else who can lock down like him.
I agree on FP just being a name, Fisher & Murphy turned up in defence and were basically extra mids at times.
Fair Call, I just wish after his done all of the hard work extracting the pill he looks to handball to an option with better disposal. on the replay i noticed many of his hack kicks go directly to the opposition.

I think too much weight is given to practice matches as they are the first we get to see of the team for 5 months.

They are not nothing, but there are no premiership points either

I get the over reactions over the practice match though. Disappointment of footy in general, and Carlton’s finish in particular. Expectations are on us, not just internally either. Finally, we got to watch real footy. Do need to temper the frustrations though.

I wish the side showed half the mongrel in evidence on this board - we'd be premierships favourites.

My 2c on Barker ( fwiw)

I dont know him and wouldnt recognise him from a bar of soap.
I knwo his 'type' very well.

He is teh 'type' who spends a lot of time 'positioning' himself in organisations/clubs - always wearing the "I'm here to help" hat.
He is the type that wishes to inherit the earth - because meakness is his strength.
He is also teh type that would dissuade the Club from hiring any person(s) with genuine smarts/track record or real drive - accountability is something he redefines every month.
He is so convinced about this strategy and philosophy - that he has (just yesterday) gone on public record to say he has 'withdrawn from coaching for now and patience is important'...wytf was that interview about?

I think he has had enough time to demonstate leadership and ability at Carlton.
What his track record shows is that depsite a plethora of high pick talent - we are bog ordinary between the arcs. In fact we are so far behind Richmond levels of performance , skill, application and execution - that it is embarassing.
Barker doesn’t seem to be on the pulse of current ball movement in regards to hand balling
We are behind half a dozen teams in regards to exiting a stoppage and transitioning between the arcs
Our kicking game seems to improved still feels the remnants of what was trying to be implemented a couple of years ago a little bit hawthorn like
Some teams make it look easy to flick the handball around usually 45 degree forward or back almost like a line of checkers
I guess I see it as a game of chess where we use our pawns and castles and other teams also use there bishops
Collingwood ran rings around us with there set ups last year
Hence had a close game with Richmond because they both understand how use and defend it
Where as we haven’t shown that we even understand it

Our boys really need to start standing up for themselves in these one on one battles. We like to have a run at the ball but hate the body contact and get pushed off too easily. Weitering is the only player that I could say can hold his own.
Weitering is just a natural footballer, knows exactly how to position himself and use his body... Harry as talented as he is could do with some education on body use, has a wonderful pair of hands but his body positioning and timing could be so much better, who do we have at the club as a specialist coach that should be educating him and our other forwards in this craft?, we don’t imo, Forward coaching structures, KPF education mentors, midfield/stoppages and tackling positions are areas of concern... see how these pan out by seasons end...

Brent Stanton is the midfield and transition coach. John Barker is the stoppage coach.
Personally think that we should wait till we play some real football and we go with our primary midfielder at bounce set ups. Stoppages weren't a great area of concern last year and I suspect that they won't be this year. Someone can give us the actual figures but from memory we were in positive territory

You don't know him but you "know" his type?
Shirley you can't be serious?

FFS ... do i need to spell everything out ... WE WERE PUMPED IN CLEARANCES OUR SET UP WAS ATROCIOUS! Won the hit outs ... LOST THE CLEARANCES .. ergo our setup were sh*t.

No man, you just need to be clearer with what you're actually saying. Like, "we had some terrible stoppage setups in this game", or "we were smashed in clearances", both of which refer to this game only.

Rather than saying "our stoppage setups are s**t" which says a whole lot more and is not borne out by recent statistics.

It's blanket statements like these that feed some of the narratives around here about players and coaches at our club.

Summary of our centre square set ups:

Attended:
Cripps - 25
Walsh - 24
Dow - 18
Williams - 16
Ed - 15
Martin - 9
Cunners - 5
Fogarty - 2

Observations:
- Willams was excellent and is a huge addition
- Walsh really good and will keep improving
- Dow poor positioning at times and looked like he lost strength in the second half, but he'll be a real weapon as he improves throughout the season
- Cripps wasn't poor but couldn't get involved
- Martin poor/non existent as with the rest of his game
- Cunners looks dangerous and a good impact player but I wouldn't feel confident with him there for large portions
- Fogarty didn't get an opportunity to show anything but I think he'd be a handy rotation
- Setterfield directly assisted 4 clearances from the wing, would like to see him used at times
- Cripps Walsh Dow most used setup (7) followed by Cripps Walsh Williams (5) with the latter being the most successful
- Ed attended all but 2 in the second half - maybe a strategy or sign he'll be used more once the season starts

Yet in the last 18 months we have improved as a team. What measures, KPI's are you using to determine the effectiveness of our assistants
Barker has been at the club for 10 years, if you are crediting him with the improvement over the last 18 months where was it for the other 8.5 years?

You are the master of questioning the facts behind what everyone else is saying while making your own baseless assumptions, how about you try proving to us how anything in the last 18 months is the result of something Barker has done.

What else would I be judging it on? Since I am posting in the Saints V Blues preseason game day thread!????

I watched the game again last night and not sure what everyone was complaining about ... we were involved in a shoot out early, most of our key forwards missing and we were within a kick with a few minutes to go ... they got two of their last three goals from stupid frees that we gave away. There was a lot to like in that performance and plenty to work on. We got beat up around the stoppages but most of the other areas we competed well in.

Add Harry and Levi into the team for round 1 and that’ll make a huge difference to f50 entires.

tigers are a tough ask even with a full team in but still lots to like for mine.

I think supporters have to realise that even though we are improving teams like the saints, dogs, tigers, lions, Dees, cats etc aren’t standing still either and we aren’t going to rock up against these teams and have our own way for four quarters.

It’s not the clearance that concerns me but the quality eg find a player with space with time to exit or dispose cleanly
I’m happy to wait as I thought we improved in the second half when we hand balled a bit more it kept Stkilda guessing and reacting
This in itself created more space and options for quality kicks
I’m still concerned because I still perceive a difference in this area between us and teams in the top 8.
But I will keep my powder dry and reassess after a few games to see how much we have improved
