Murphy can play back, can play wing, was good up front as a junior. Can play a part in the rotations like Mayne will.

Murphy just needs a block of games to build just like T Brown and Sier are getting. From there we will know more about him and whether to persist with him beyond his current contract.

Anyhow, agree to disagree on that one

As fans, I agree that we'd need to see that to know. Don't think the club need to see that though as they see a heap of him. I do think he'll get chances this year, just not while we have such a clean bill of health. He's clearly in the mix for selection. With the Browns, Cameron and Sier, he's of the age where you can hope for him to contribute if he gets chances - the draftees you more just hope to see some positive signs.

Murphy’s been training and playing intraclub on the wing to a good standard... common knowledge around here.

With our list profile of 23 players with 23 games or less (at seasons start) do you seriously think we should invest more time in Mayne? That rd 3 is the only thing the club needs to prepare for going forth? Crikey.
So should we invest time in kids who we don't yet know enough about?

A good number of these kids won't ever be able to perform at a level Mayne can this year let alone have a career like his. The way we find out which of the kids will be likely to be of AFL level is let them play VFL and show they can do well and then shine at that level. That will be the subset of kids that will then get their AFL chance.

Some of that group may be good enough to get AFL games this season, some might require a full year of VFL this year and then press for senior selection in season 2 or 3. Some will turn out just not to be good enough

Mayne, WHE, Thomas, Call Brown have gone through such apprenticeships.

WHE his chance came round of his 1st season but he was a much more highly rated youngster than any of our kids playing at a club , GWS, that had no option

Mayne played round 2 1st season showing early he was going to be a great pick 40, hopefully we can get a player as good as Mayne from our 2019/20 crop

Josh Thomas took til season 4 to get his 1st game and turned into a solid AFL player, hopefully there is another like him in the current crop

Call Brown debuted round 12 of his second season and has become a 5 season player, better than the average.

They are all examples of good pick ups but often took time to be ready

This current crop havent played any VFL yet, let them do that and then see which ones will be able to take the next step this season. Patience

See what you’re saying but I’m talking about Murphy vs Mayne selection for this week specifically. Not McInnes vs Mayne... but Murphy who has been on the list for over 3 years but is not given a chance at senior level

I think thats because at this stage he hasnt doen enough at VFL level to get another chance. He has had very little opportunity to impress in 2021 and won't get it until the VFL season begins. It's then up to him. If he is good enough he will get games. There is still a real chance he is just not up to the level and doesn't make it. If he can't star at VFL level in season 4 he isn't the player we hoped he would be. We will know soon enough.

We made one forced change and brought in an experienced, dependable player. Perspective.

It’s also only round 3. In round 3 of 2010, we lost to the Saints with Lockyer, Medhurst, Fraser and Obree in the side. Our youth will get their chance this year, but let’s remember they’re coming off a year of no footy for the most part.

Thank you for posting sense.

The kids aren't physically ready for AFL level, yet.

We saw that with Henry and the club obviously saw him as the most ready to go.

They'll be playing VFL soon enough and get the chance to state their case.

I'd be shocked if a couple of them haven't cemented a best 22 spot by the end of the season.

But for now, people need to calm their farm and watch us beat the Bears tonight.

irrelevant stat - we are number 3 for playing fwd. Compared to 15th last year.

Will be keen to see how we transition against a superior team, I suspect not too well. Just glad we're at least doing something different in style and structure.

If we get burnt we get burnt but, so be it, we'll then know for sure it's regen and development time.

Do you think Mayne is the right choice for the game style we have this year?

Our ball movement needs quick decisions and risk.

I'm not sure Mayne is up for that.

I'm not questioning his effort, it's always immense.

I think he'll play half forward, follow instructions to a tee and give a good contest.

Surely we win this game tonight, big opportunity for grundy to dominate, we won't get a better chance to beat the Lions

Yep, they are deadset ripe for the picking.

If we are fair dinkum then we win this.

They'll come out firing though, backs to the wall etc.

Stiff shit though, we and all the other Vic sides copped it last year.

Also, didn't realise that Brisbane are going for land of the giants in the backline. They're cooked if the ball hits the deck. I want to see Sidey and Pendles roaming forward a lot tonight.

Also, I'll be expecting De Goey and also WHE to kick multiple goals. Hosky cops a lot on this board and sometimes rightly so. However, he plays a half forward role that doesn't involve him getting much of the footy. I'd expect him to get more time as the goal square forward tonight and also expect him to make that most of that.

Finally, its laughable the hate some players cop. Not every player will be out there to get 30 touches. Role players are there for a reason and its time for some people to look beyond the stat tally.

It's one of those games where they may be galvanised by the experience and come out breathing fire, or they may be limp and lacklustre.

I don`t hate Callum , where did i say that ? don`t play the journalistic persona of all care and no responsibility , he is simply not an AFL standard player

Yet he's out there wearing an AFL jumper
Maybe the coaches know a little bit more than you
but then again you're sitting at a keyboard flinging shit so you'd know more then

It would be great to see some of his old Fremantle hit-up forward form, along with his dead-eye kicking for goal. It must be in there somewhere?

Have you forgotten Mayne's first couple of years with us? Buckley pretty much threw him under the bus. He had to grind his way back into the side, and has earned every bit of consideration he is now given. Buckley recognized his error and changed his view.

Was going to post something like this when I read this and Daves (Buckleys favourite) post but couldn't be bothered
Glad somebody did

Could Chris Mayne play half forward tonight and go to Daniel Rich to quell his influence? I think that’s a perfect role for him particularly with the new attacking kicking we’ve seen in the first two games.

Lol the fu** were you expecting to happen?

And who deserves to be dropped after last week?
Wouldn't drop anyone but would have been nice to see McCreery given a game instead of a 32 yo who isn't that good, just my opinion.
Also wasn't serious about the tea lady :) .

I'd love nothing more than to see last years draftees come in and dominate. The reality is they've missed way too much footy to just step into the senior lineup from day dot.

After Henry's debut I think the club will be very cautious when they go about debuting the next 18 year old.

Either way we'll know after a few VFL games who is and isn't ready to play at senior level. Until then I think we have to expect Mayne, Greenwood and the like to be picked over the kids.

Cal is elite for pressure acts.

That's all we need to know. That's his role.
I don't think that's quite "all we need to know". You can't keep a guy in the team for pressure acts lone. His disposal needs major improvement. If he does, he'll be solid. If it doesn't, he'll rightfully be gone

I hear you , Henry was not ready , McCrae , Murphy, McCreery are cherry ripe now, with an extra layer of chocolate
How many training sessions have you been to??
I can tell you I have been to the majority since Xmas, except the last week or so, and can tell you Macrae is probably the only one to stand as any where near ready. Murphy has been serviceable as has McCreery.
Being at these training sessions it is easy to see that they are no where near the intensity of a genuine VFL match and in many cases no where near as long (usually 15 min qtrs). The proof was with Henry being overawed after good showings in the Practice matches.
Macrae, Henry, Reef, McCreery and a few others are all showing good signs but no where near ready for AFL without some competitive VFL games and genuine match fitness in them.
