I really hate charts that don’t have a constant y axis.
Logarithmic charts are pretty standard. They are the best solution when you have small and very large values on the one chart.

The risk is 'scores of deaths and mass lockdowns' if spread at such events though. We're talking consequences of multiple deaths and widespread economic shutdown.

How do the benefits of community sporting events outweigh that risk?

Because the risk is so small. That's why. And the benefits are so large. That's also why.

Because the risk is so small.
Think about it this way:

If you were offered a free ticket in a draw with a decent chance at a free dinner at a fancy restaurant, but also a small chance at losing your life savings and your grandparents... would you accept that ticket?

You're weighting the benefits of a kids sporting event, against the risk of a COVID outbreak literally shutting down an entire city with all the economic consequences that entails, and possibly killing dozens of people (if not more).

I'm not seeing how those 'benefits' outweigh those risks.

You're really scaring me. I had no idea that my kid's soccer games could lead to such disaster. Tell me when and where this has happened.

Because it's not "a kids' sporting event". It's a generation of thousands of kids across all outdoor sports. During Winter. For the second year running.

Nor do you need medical or scientific qualifications to understand proportion.

If the chance of outdoor spread is miniscule, and the costs of restricting outdoor activities is great, then the justification for said restrictions is reduced.

This is why people like me lack trust. Masks on public transport. Fine. Masks in supermarkets. Fine. Work from home if you can. Fine. Close cinemas. Fine. Cancel outdoor kids' sport. Not fine. Cancel outdoor community sport. Not fine.

As a nation we have demonstrated, in that going out in the car, we will stop at McDonalds, visit relatives, take a side trip to some country town 500km away, The virus has and can been spread in this manner.
Do you propose police escorts to kids sporting events?

Hence the lock down limits movement and travel.

In the world where we can trust everyone, we don't need lockdown, we don't need hotel quarantine etc.
The world we live in has people potentially spreading the virus while protesting their right to spread it.

What's the stat without intense medical intervention?
Aren't the 'let it rip' crew against anything that give 'big pharma' a profit?

We also have intense medical interventions for influenza, which can have a greater CFR than for the Delta variant - but we have never before introduced vaccine passports, hotel quarantine, mandatory mask wearing etc.

Here's an interesting stat this week from the UK.

More than half of Covid hospitalisations are patients who only tested positive after admission, leaked data reveal.
The figures suggest vast numbers are being classed as hospitalised by Covid when they were admitted with other ailments, with the virus picked up by routine testing.
Experts said it meant the national statistics, published daily on the government website and frequently referred to by ministers, may far overstate the levels of pressures on the NHS.
The leaked data – covering all NHS trusts in England – show that, as of last Thursday, just 44 per cent of patients classed as being hospitalised with Covid had tested positive by the time they were admitted.
The majority of cases were not detected until patients underwent standard Covid tests, carried out on everyone admitted to hospital for any reason.
Overall, 56 per cent of Covid hospitalisations fell into this category, the data, seen by The Telegraph, show.

(probably paywalled)

Holey Moley you got it bad!

Covid isn't the flu.
Most people acknowlege this.

We don't get shut down because of kids sporting events. We get locked down because the virus leaks from HQ here or in another state. We will have another lockdown some time in the near future. Letting people out to have some fun and exercise together outside in the meantime won't cause any further harm to the economy or people's wellbeing.

Wait, you guys arent allowed to do kids sporting events when your cases are at zero?

These lockdowns aren't because of leaks from HQ, in either state.

I let your 'let it rip' comment slide. No one saying let it rip or that Covid is the flu. Then you ignored what I said. You are making disingenuous arguments.
So you draw parallels to influenza in your response, then get annoyed when it's pointed out they are not the same thing.
Ok.

Logarithmic charts are pretty standard. They are the best solution when you have small and very large values on the one chart.
They are useful for the 25 per Cent of people that bother to look at the scale of the axis and think through logically as to what they actually mean. For everyone else they are misinterpreting them.

They go to hospital cos they feel extra sick on top of their existing conditions without knowing why. The reason they are feeling worse is they also have Covid.

aids never directly killed anyone. It just caused deaths. In some cases Covid is the same. its still a cause of death even if it’s in combination with existing illnesses. It’s the combination that kills people.

They also suggest that when you call the ambulance because you can't breathe, they don't diagnose you before they take you to hospital.

Holey Moley you got it bad!

Its exactly what happens.
Government politely asks us to self isolate when returning from overseas. Instead, we go to parties while positive. Result: Travellers are locked up.
Government asks us to limit movement , we don't we have lots of sneaky parties and spread Covid. Result we get locked down.

People drove to Orbost from Melbourne. during our first Covid outbreak after being told not to travel.

So tell me what have i got so bad?
At least its not idiocy.

In a world we can’t trust everyone…..

So because we can’t trust everyone, we incarcerate everyone? That’s your solution to “bad things”?
