Watched the movie for the first time last night. Its very good. You can tell 5 mins in who this movie was about.
Basically the Ern Clarke reign as president.
The stageplay debuted mid 1977 and the film was filmed during 1979.
There are tell tail signs of the era, such as the captain wearing the number 1 (a custom that the club stuck to until Ray Shaw took over Captain in 1979), and that Laurie Holden (Jack Thompson’s character) initially feeling safe in his job because there was no other coaching candidates coming up amongst the players of the club (The club never appointed a coach outside the Collingwood playing ranks until after the 1976 season when they brought on Tommy Hafey)
As for Ted Parker being based on Ern Clarke, it seems to fit for many reasons. The 3 letters + 6 letters name match might be a clue. Both had only served as President for a short time. Both got turfed during the season. Both were businessmen. Both clashed with the senior coach.
