Rankine is overrated….

Too easy to take out of the game with a hard nosed defender like Starcevich or Hardwick. He loses focus against these types of players.

Always injured due to lack of hard work, isn’t totally committed to AFL footy like the elite players.

The small guys you have already are super impressive, hard at the footy types. Going to be tough to have them in the 2’s behind Rankine.

Would be hard to get yourself up every second week to play in front of 10 people. I imagine it took a toll 😚

Unpopular opinion, I don't like this*

*provided we're forced to give up pick 5.

Rankine was pick 3 in a pretty shallow draft, and on what we've seen since, I'd have Walsh, King, King, Rozee, Bailey Smith, Butters, Rowbottom ahead of him, and can probably throw him in a basket with Luko, McInerney, Quaynor, Blakey, Atkins, Wilkie and Caldwell in that next group (flaky but talented or low upside but effective). Probably goes 7-16 in a redraft. If he was in the previous year's draft, there's probably 13 in that group ahead of him and 15 in the 'similar ish' group. 4 years less of his career, out of contract.

Sure, there's upside. But in 4 years, it's been flashes. Hard to expect him to just all of a sudden become consistent - especially with stacks of guaranteed money ahead of him long term.

Seems a 'cream on top' player in a position we're (relative to other parts of our list) already competitive in. And the mids that'll be available at pick 5 suit us pretty well - dynamic/clean types. I'd be happier digging into the future first and back the list's upside to make that pick 7/8/9 and a year down the line.
He's not even 22 yet.... He's as good as Cameron was at the same age. He'll be a great addition to our team and is a diehard crows fan.

I think he's worth pick 5.

I dont know..

I like Pedlar and definitely still dont think he’s had a fair enough run at it to make a full judgement on him yet..

But I have Taylor in front of him at the moment.

Mainly due to Taylor actually having full 4 quarters of influence on games..

Pedlar goes MIA too much still.

Hopefully both improve further with another preseason under Burgess.
Pedlar is speed, strength and hops.

Taylor is composure, footy I.Q and skills.

Do you make allowances for the Club Rankine was Drafted too ? .....it was a tough gig playing in the GC's fwd line, 3 of his 4 years

Any coincidence Rankine had his best year, the year Gold Coast improved and started to knock on the 8 ?

Doubt it. We might fluke it with an easier draw like we did in 2012, but ultimately if we got that far it would be a temporary spike like us in 2012 or Melbourne in 2018. We should be planning for a sustained finals run around 2025-2030.

We won’t get it now. We should have pushed hard for one in 2020 after a spoon and losing CEY, Betts, Jacobs, Greenwood, Keath, Jenkins, Atkins, Crouch and Hartigan in a two year period.
No possible way we get a PP in recent years. We would have been laughed at 3 years out from being Minor Premier and making the GF. And the whole “self inflicted” camp shite would have been dragged up

Yeah * GC. They screwed us out of Anderson so he could hold Rowell's hand up there.

Look at it this way - if we had Anderson, we would probably be spending the Rankine money on keeping him instead. Swings and roundabouts...
How could we have ever got Anderson? Getting confused here I think.

Was CC pick 3 in the National Draft?
Does the fact that CC wasn't a top 10 pick devalue his worth? Surely what he has done against men in the AFL is rated higher than what a player has done against kids. What a player has done at underage level is completely overrated.

Absolutely I do.

Insofar as looking at their recent top handful pick record.

Rowell - not a return on investment thus far. Looks limited
Anderson - about a return on investment. Good player. Bit of a butcher
King - clear return on investment so far
Lukosius - not a return on investment.
Rankine - not a return on investment
Flanders - clearly not a return on investment
Brodie - didn't net them a return on investment, only became one once he got out
Bowes - probably not a return on investment, but lost this year to injury when he might have become one
Ainsworth - becoming a return on investment, but still, for pick 4, probably unders
Ah Chee - not a return on investment
Wright - see: Brodie
Garlett - not a return on investment
Kolodjashnij - not a return on investment
Lonergan - not a return on investment
Jack Martin - not a return on investment
David Swallow - good solid player, but hasn't lived up to the clear pick 1 he was
Harley Bennell - probably similar to Rankine. Flashes, but never really earnt the pick he was
Sam Day - not a return on investment
Josh Caddy - not a return on investment
Dion Prestia - clear return on investment
Daniel Gorringe - not a return on investment
Tom Lynch - clear return on investment
Seb Tape - not a return on investment

The point I'm making is something stinks up there. They've made enough high picks for bad luck to be less impactful. They've just failed to develop so many talents. A few grew after leaving. Shows that the damage isn't permanent. But there has to be an element of players wasting the most important years of their development in a system that doesn't do their talent justice.

And in Rankine's case, four years in that system means you can't consider where he was drafted. If he'd gone to say, Hawthorn - I think he'd be a very different player right now than what he currently is.

Anderson was ours until the AFL handed the Suns the priority pick after their 1st pick (pick1) because the Demons signalled a long way out they were taking Luke Jackson...Suns were always taking Rowell with their 1st.

Its all good.. everyone has an opinion.... same as when someone requests a trade to port...

Who I can't seem to remember the last big name to request a trade there... was it orazio?

Soon to be Dunkley. Let’s not bring them into it. They look like having a decent off season as well.

Someone suggested this on the draft board

Pick 5 + 2023/1 for Rankine and 2022/1

Would like to give them our 2022/2 pick for pick 24-26 that they have this year on top of the above. Time to employ the Melbourne strategy of bring picks forward to get talent earlier
