Voss has quietly dropped 5 previous starting 22/23 players after the Adelaide and then St Kilda losses: LoB/TDK/Cowan/Kennedy and Fisher. (LoB aside as far as running power goes) -by doing so VOss has increased the running power of the team and contested ability by including Cincotta/Kemp and pushing Docherty into more midfield duties.

Really enjoyed seeing Charlie pretty much being clear space in the forward fifty on many occasions Harry pushed back to CHF and Jack being told to run his own lines - away from Charlie thank you very much.

If teams want to continue playing teh extra defender - they can try and win the contested ball against Carlton's midfield or sacrifice one of their forwards - giving Carlton a free extra defender and overlap for Saad/Cincotta/McGovern to exploit.

I think this game is going to be very interesting test of what Voss and his team have put in place post the two previous losses. One thing for sure- Brisbane wont be able to just run around Carlton on the outside as easily as they have in the past.
Heard Kingy talk about under use of Weiters this morning. He also went with TDK at half back with Young to help him, but mainly he thinks Weiters needs to be free for intercept play which is his big strength, not take the no1 foward.
Thoughts?

Most pundits seem to be taking Bris-Vegas in a close one.

It feels 50/50 to me (teams on paper) with 45k crazy Blues supporters getting us up & over the line.

I want to believe & be confident at some point this year - guess it’s going to be a journey :).

Come on you beautiful baggers!

Does my head in this stuff. Weits is one of the best shut down guys in the comp. Give him the big number 1 forwards and he smokes them. Hawkins, Daniher etc all have their worst performances against us.

We saw vs Adelaide what happens when young gets the big guy and Weits is on the more mobile guy. Let's not do that again thanks Kingy.

someone on here said he had a nasty corkie
He wouldn't have played or flown last week if that was true btw. Corkies are horrible in pressure changes. Especially after a game. Would've spread the bleed and made it way bigger....

I know of a state cricketer hit just below the thigh pad in the nets, new bl 140-150, hit flush. Bad one. Flew that day. Couldn't play when he got there. Knee to his hip went black.

All I can say thank goodness David King isn’t our coach. The bloke is a click bait specialist.

Weitering is one of the best one-on-one defenders in the league but let’s play him as an interceptor.

I’m not sure why anyone thinks TDK is a defender. He can’t judge the ball in flight and has poor positional awareness.

1. Weitering has the scope to play as an interceptor, he is better than just a lockdown defender. Sam Durdin could come in and lock down, Weitering has far more strings to his bow and should be better utilised imo. Think it can be a gradual transition though, just certain periods of games where he swaps opponents and focuses more on marking and distribution.
2. "Can't judge the ball in flight and has poor positional awareness" is actually describing why TDK is not a good forward. Defenders get led to the ball and it's far easier for them to impact, how many times have we seen the 'failed forward becomes solid KPD' scenario? Simply, it's a hell of a lot easier to play KPD than KPF. Reckon TDK will make a good defender one day but I can't see it being at Carlton.

Weights was the #1 intercept marking defender at the time of his draft - with daylight second. Carlton however never invested in a proper FB - and Weitering was repurposed into the #1 stopper - by Bolton who preferred Marchbank as the designated CHB and interceptor. It was only when Marchbank started being always injured that Jones was given a new lease of life as a second tall defender - like Cripps Weitering had to battle one out with B grade help for a few years - remember Docherty was largely missing due to injury in Weitering's formative years. It is all different now with Saaad /Docherty and a bunch of others filling out the defensive list.

TDK as a CHB? Carlton has better options atm.

Totally agree with King - Weiters is being used as a road block.

He used to intercept and deliver by foot beautifully - we are realising 30% of his value.

Not sure about the ball flight thing BB. I’ve seen him take a few hangers which I’d presume would require a fair amount ball flight awareness.

I asked why Ed was still getting a game. It came down to he is the only one they think can do a shut down role. But I agree I think we need to go past Ed at some point.
That's just not true though, Hewett can play the shut down role very well. He's also excellent at playing that role and still being damaging the other way.

I want the best of both worlds. The best key defenders in the comp both lockdown on key forwards and intercept. Look at Taylor, Andrews, May, Moore. Weitering should be able to do that as well. He just needs to play more aggressively.

Who goes out to make room for Sam though. You end up robbing Peter to Pay Paul a bit.

We've got a top 3 defense in the comp and according to squiggle it's top 2. I don't see the need to change anything.

If Kemp and Gov can fulfil the intercept role all good - just a shame we aren’t seeing the best of Weiters.

Floaty interceptors are a dime a dozen. Gun full backs who can do both and stop the bigs and gun forwards are worth way more. Look at the damage teams with two keys do these days. Nobody has enough good defenders to stop Harry + Charlie, Lynch + Riewoldt (before Riewoldt required a walking frame), Kennedy + Darling, Hawkins + Cameron.... These teams are all the successful ones too. It really is awesome that we have one of the few defenders that can nullify one of the two guns in these setups so we can gameplan the other one.
