Maybe instead of starting with the easy to grab GOPs, we should aim high and look at which clubs have have got promising kids in the positions we need being kept out of the seniors by more established players, then make plays for the kids.

If they don't want to come, make a play for the older players keeping them out. Clubs might be willing to get to the next chapter a year or two earlier.

I reckon he looks absolutely lost with what's expected of him. Goes when he should stay, tries to hit up teammates when he should have a shot, leaves his man early but chooses the wrong option etc. He looks like a player who is best on instinct but being trained to play accountable. What ever it is he's a shadow of what he was before. He's gone from a match-winning line-breaker to a match killing heartbreaker.
He will have some interest but not sufficient Imo to get what he wants or the compo we want. It makes sense to just match give him a year to rebuild his value and we both potentially win. Gresham was never a great kick but he has lost quite a bit off his set shots, he needs a big offseason to get his body right.

More like needs to get his attitude right, his body held up well this year.

Here are the potential draft prospects around our first pick will likely fall and end of frd as free agent comp with an emphasis on Sandy Dragons players and Mids....as taken from Fox rankings.
Ryley Sanders Sandy D 186cm Mid pick 8
Nate Caddy Mid 192 cm Fwd pick 11
Ollie Murphy 200cm Def pick 12
Darcy Wilson Vic C 185cm wing pick 14
Clay Hall WA 188cm mid pick 23
George Stevens Vic C 189cm mid Def pick 24
Archie Roberts Sand D 182cm mid Def pick 27
Cooper Simpson mid 182cm pick 28
Joel Freijah 191 cm wing pick 29

So if we are clever and assume we do not trade for GCS and if we finish out of the 8 we are a chance to get Sanders if we finish in the 8 pick 11 likely get Caddy.
Wilson will be available so will Ollie Murphy if the other two are snapped up.
2 of the rest will be a good result.

GCS will need circa 4200 points with 25% discount for all 3 academy players. That's around 6 2nd round picks. They have 2 2nds and 2 3rds at the moment. They will need probably 4 more.
That first rounder is probably used getting Walter at pick 2. But Flanders for pick 30 and maybe our 50 is about right.

Then it's Caddy Flanders and probably George Stevens....let alone who we may get if we trade a player or two.

Use a late pick for Dow and take Matt Crouch free to a good home.

Not the worst result around.

In some pretty good company when he does play.

Also wouldn't mind a look at Melican. UFA this year and remember him playing well against us.

I was keen on Melican last year. He's underrated. I thought we could pinch him while they had Paddy. There would be some kind of cosmic justice to that.

The problem is that we'd turn him into Hunter Clark and Coffield. If we could trust them not to sell the cow for a handful of dirt you might do it but realistically he's here and we might as well try to maximise him. He isn't going to be a player that drops in value later so might as well try to make him better. We've got bigger issues with the list still.

You think a guy just looses 10 metres off his set shots without any physical issues, look at the injury’s he’s had it’s not rocket science.
His bodys held up well him losing 10 metres per kick is now a permanet fixture it will not get any better with a good pre season all that will get better is fitness, you stated his body is letting him down it is not.

Did you say that last week ? Yes he was crap on the weekend but
He played well with the incentive of fronting up at Sandy, he was lucky he came on early enough to nearly play a full game has been terrible for 90% of his games this year.

I'd say the main driving factors are he is a restricted free agent and has had feelers from other sides and not coming into allign with RTB game style & commitment to the team, Ross' moto team first attitude.

Are these numbers taking into account Gold Coast academy picks.?

I’ve been a big fan of Joel freijah since last year. If we could get him with a second round pick I would be stocked. Darcy Wilson would be perfect at our first. Pure mid with good speed. Wouldn’t mind Ollie Murphy either of doogs goes

Another conundrum for next year.
If we recruit say pick 10 you would expect him to play early Hotton needs a run. Add Coff and McKenzie back to full playing ability as IMHO best 22. If we get Flanders as well that is 5 players from yesterday's side that you have to replace.

Gresh Flanders
Clarke pick 10
Byrnes McKenzie
Stocker Coff
?? Hotton

Then there's Doogs Billings Ross and Membrey to probably slot back in. What about Hayes?

Cordy Doogs
Sharman Membrey
Billings ??
Ross ??
Hayes ??

Things start to get a bit sticky as I find it difficult to see like for like replacements in the team.

Starters for next year player nos 5 7 9 10 12 16 17 19 22 25 26 29 32 35 44 that's 15.
8??

There are 8 names above to make 23.

Can see why we are looking at moving a few old and bold on.

Factor in that 6-10 players will be injured at any one time, we still need about 30-32 players good enough to make the 23.

It's all about the ruck

Probably the most important position on the field.

So happy we locked in Marshall, when Essendon came sniffing

Stop being so reasonable
Teach him to lead maybe?

Ha ha - nah I'm just following the selection panel.

He's clearly a persona non grata in their view (and many in this forum) irrespective of the fact that he has been as statistically effective as many of the options put forward to "partner" Marshall in the future.

Putting Voldemort aside, I've just been staggered that throughout a year where we have at times absolutely struggled to have an effective forward presence, the selectors have never tried used any of the three ruck/forward options that we have running around at Sandy in unison with Marshall.

So if that's their attitude, why bother chasing another ruck/forward?

The club has clearly been chasing a young genuine best 22 ruck for some time.

Draper, Xerri, TDK have all been in our sights in recent years.

Which begs the question of what does our list management team really think Marshall is?

More like needs to get his attitude right, his body held up well this year.
Gresham has had a back, Achilles and pcl all of which would potentially affect his kicking. I think he came back to training rehabbing the knee and injured it again during the season and had to withdraw from a game after failing a fitness test. Imo the most likely cause of his loss of distance on set shots is injury, you don’t just loose 10 metres, he’s mid twenties not mid forties.
