Can Port win a premiership under Ken Hinkley?

Bit rich saying he robbed you of your 30s.
Finals consistently. Multiple home prelims.
2021 was just a poor night to a freak Bulldogs side.
Probably not a great finals coach.

Wonder what you would’ve said if you’re a Fremantle fan in that time? 7 years between a final appearance. Not grand finals, one finals series appearance.
Finals between 2016-2024. Two in 2022.

0-11 in 2016.
true....

Again... 5 finals wins between 2013-21 isn't bad. Most, if not all Port fans would trade their 2013 Elim final win or 2014-win vs Fremantle in that semifinal for a preliminary final win in 2020 vs the tigers or 2021 preliminary final win vs the dogs.

But life and footy in general pans out in crazy and unpredictable ways.

Some teams are lucky to be well run to win 5 finals in 30 seasons and make finals 10 times out of 30 years.

Saying that... I will always savor that 2022 Elim final win vs the dogs. Fyfe was 24 years old, Walters was 25 years old and Mundy was 30 or 31 years old in that 2015 Qualifying win vs the swans. Then comes that 6 year period of no finals. Fyfe, Walters and Mundy spent their prime years seeing through a dockers rebuild.

That 2022 Elim final, Walters was like 31 years old and Mundy was 36 or 37 years old. Fyfe was 30 years old but didn't play in that elim final vs the dogs as he was injured.

You could equally argue that stinkers poor coaching has actually be propped up by elite talent - eg Robbie Gray, Ollie wines, these days rozee and butters
I will say this...

Had Ross Lyon been your Coach in 2015-19, Ross Lyon would of got Port finals every season. Mind you, Port would of been forced to play dire footy. Port would of got 2 or 3 elim final wins from 2015-19.

M8 we DID play dire footy that period. It was mostly missed in the media, because the Vic media pays us no attention, and because we were exciting in 2014 and everyone's favourite club, that perception hung around for a while.

Kenny decided after 2014 that we needed to defend better, so we ditched our free flowing attacking style and played stodgy crap. Other teams caught up to our fitness advantage as well.

Kenny does mastermind a lot of close wins. If he could do the same in finals his statue would already be commissioned.

Needs a stronger defence and for Georg/Marshall/Lord to be in full swing together before he can crack premiership gold.

It’s the way Ken handles the big moments and the big occasions that make him an elite coach.
David Koch knows this and Port are very lucky to have Ken locked away …

He's a real maestro, the way he does it from the boundary without any headphones is just incredible. Has a strong telepathic connection with the box

Port's record in close games is remarkable since Ken went down to guide the troops from the boundary.

Oh what impresses me is his record in the big Saturday night games at Adelaide oval! Last night was his 13th win and just 24 losses! That's like a 35% win rate on the big stage! Truly incredible stuff and I think he's due another extension after impressively beating premiership favourites fremantle at home

Port Adelaide are 9-3 from their last 12 games decided by 3 goals or less.

If Hinkley gets them close lately, Port have a good track record of closing the deal.

Our wins in close games is because of individual players and luck. Nothing to do with Ken or him making any changes.

Last night, JHF was the one that directed others to leave him isolated in the goal square when he had a mismatch.

Last year against the bombers, Houston kicks the goal from outside 50 to win after the siren.

The other game against the bombers, Phillips had a shot on goal with 40 seconds left and misses. We win by under a goal.

Against the Swans, Florents kick falls short on the goal line after the siren and we get up.

In none of our close wins is it because of something tactical from the sidelines. Our whole game plan is reliant on the individual players.

We also did a whole bunch of dumb shit in the last quarter last night (repeatedly bombing to Luke Ryan, Georgiades taking advantage with 30 seconds left when we needed to run down time, our best defender Dan Houston stuck on the opposite wing for Freo's final attack) that a well coached and well drilled side would not have done. Even the commentators were calling it out. Freo just weren't good enough to take advantage.

This whole discourse is very amusing.

Apparently Kenny doesn't do any tactical coaching, but also gets blamed for the use of ineffective tactics on game day :p

Kenny also apparently doesn't give instructions on the boundary but when the footage shows him giving instructions the haters pretend they didn't see it.

Kenny has no idea what's going on because he doesn't wear a headset, same as the other coaches who don't use headsets on the boundary line (most notably the premiership coach usually isn't wearing a headset and therefore must have no idea of what's going on).

Kenny has managed to ruin the development of Port's young players while at the same time developing a core of young midfielders and forwards that will keep Port in contention for maybe a decade.

At no point has Port had a GF calibre team so the failed to make GF claim is moot.
Need to get a good key forward for starters.
That would be Hinkley's fault if he couldn't mold a GF calibre list in the amble time he has had in over a decade. It's coaches who are instrumental in who comes to a club. I don't get this "it's everyone else's fault except Hinkley's" argument, the one common denominator for their lack of success over the past decade.

That's the recruiter not head coach.

Recruiters do not act autonomously, the senior coach instructs recruiters and talent scouts on who they want. We've seen this many times, senior coaches will be very specific on the exact player they want. For example, Clarkson specifically poached a number of Port players back in the day for Hawthorn, because he knew them as an assistant coach at Port. I think even Hinkley specifically targeted Dixon because of their Gold Coast Suns connection.

At some clubs maybe. At others they are autonomous.
With coach input being limited to a desired player profile.

As Grant Thomas would say, there's teams who are happy to exist and play in the AFL - ie Fremantle, St Kilka and Port, and then there's teams who are in it to really try and win the premiership - ie, Collingwood, Geelong, etc.
