We won by being more determined for longer, and we got some good performances out of a few depth players that sets us in good stead.

Yes but I can’t recall who. Usually it’s Clarkson but I don’t think it was. But either a Coach or the media brought attention to it and we copped the nit 15 stuff the next game onwards.

People saying Grundy had a poor game are just salt s**ts that need a slap in the face. 38 RC for Grundy compared to 30 for Ladhams and Grundy had 16 more HOs and 9 more hit outs to advantage.

Grundy was getting us a HOTA every 3.45 ruck contests whereas Ladhams was around the every 15 ruck contests.

Lets even account for clearance differential between Grundy and Ladhams, its still 3.45 compared to 6 (surprised Grundy didn't have a clearance tbh).


Grundy has shown time and again he is the #1 ruck

He's definitely slowed down a bit since the midway point of last year I think but yeah, some of the stuff is over the top. He's still a serviceable ruckman and we're definitely better off still than we were when we had Hickey holding down the number 1 spot.

100% mate I swear our side loves to complicate what is a simple game most of the time, just play to your limitations and get the ball forward, If I don't see forwards leading at the ball next week my TV is in danger. How hard is it to run at where the ball is, we are making it a million times easier for opposition defenders.

Yep Bice was awesome under pressure, I just see no need for Florent, he’s shown who he is. Great clubman but the skills just don’t pay them bills…. Well for us supporters, I’m sure Ollie is doing great.

Hello, first time poster here. Anyone willing to shed some light on something that’s been bothering me for a while?

Campbell is an elite kick. But he’s always seemed to be a player that is lacking in confidence. As a result, I’ve often wondered why his coaches/teammates don’t instruct/look to get the ball in his hands as often as possible. Surely they know from training with the guy that his left foot is lethal.

Yes, he’s going to make mistakes as he’s building his self-belief. But I’m constantly perplexed as to why he is ignored so often. In today’s game Amartey had the opportunity to pass to a free Campbell on the run. He would have had a shot from 50m on the run. He has the talent to nail that 9 times out of 10.

He had a similar opportunity on the run from approx 50m which he blundered/turned over because he seemed to be in two minds about taking a shot or passing the ball off. In that situation, surely he should take the responsibility of having the shot. And surely his coaches and teammates should encourage him to do so. Instead, Hayward turned around and gave him a spray for not pinpointing him on a short lead. The directive should be to take the god damn shot! We believe in you!

In summary, his game today was pleasing, and he seems to be building in confidence. But I still can’t help but feel they are wasting so much of his talent.

I sat next to a few Freo supporters who commented multiple times a lot of our guys looked hobbled/laboring/unfit/lazy (they couldn't figure out which but those were their various guesses.) I couldn't really unsee it after that. Swans players taking literally a year to get from defence down to the forward line, and vice versa. A lot of standing around in the outfield, straddling the line between holding their width and just plain coasting without wanting to be involved (though when it was time for them to get involved, they seemed to be giving their all - cracking in, defending desperately, being physical.)

As well as all the other issues that have been well-discussed but that I only got to see for myself in the flesh yesterday, I was reminded of just how far off our best I think we are. Yet we were 3 goals off the Hawks, a goal off the Lions, and arguably should've won by a few goals today. That's with all the injuries, too.

All things considered to be 1-2 whilst looking fiercely competitive in a scoreboard sense isn't a bad position to be in. Not great, but honestly... I'll take it.

I didn't quite see the clearance success that others saw. I actually thought part of the reason we struggled to maintain any sort of momentum was because every time we'd kick a goal, it'd go back to the middle and Freo would win it and take it down their end. But it was a good battle in the stoppages.

Of the so-called whipping boys like Hayward, Florent, Grundy & Papley, I think only the latter really did himself any favours going forward. Still not even close to where we need Papley to be, but much improved, and he had a crack. I actually don't care if a player is average whilst playing with an injury, as long as they do the best they can.

A lot of players had good-to-great games - Warner, Jordon, Rowy, Bice, Ladhams, McLean, Campbell, Wicks, Hamling, Roberts, Amartey, Warner Jr. and Lloyd. If you had said we'd be having any win with those names (Warner, Rowy & Lloyd aside) at any point this year, let alone one on the road in Perth, I would've probably fallen off my chair laughing. But I think it speaks to the overwhelming positive part of this somewhat underwhelming first month of the season - the depth we've been forced to build. Could pay dividends later in the season.

As for 'competition' for forward spots, it's early days for McLean with his one game. Amartey's already ahead of his first three games of 2024, a year when he kicked an average of 1.7/game for 43 goals in total, ahead of any other Swan. McLean kicked a goal/game for 27 total, but he spent a bit of time in ruck and around the ground.

I just don't see McLean as a stay at home forward. He has a bit more reach and a bigger tank but Amartey is faster. Joel Amartey is bigger and meaner this year. He could kick 45 or even 60+ this year.

The harder question is probably where McDonald fits in.

Been thinking about Kinnear saying that Amartey is one of his favourite ever picks over the years. Reckon he could become a genuine hazard over the next 5 years.

Agree with most of this mate, the team defence worries me as there seems to be some disconnect in the defence at times, it was however a mile better this week than the first two (especially round 0). This team defence needs to be a lot better and Jordan has his biggest job jet on LDU coming up for sure, it's him or Sheezel but I'd tag LDU he's in serious form.

Florent was better as the second half wore on, Hayward was awful, sorry but you can't miss 2 gimmie dolly's and be seen as a good game, even 1 of them and the margin is safe. I can't agree on Rowy having a good game but agree on the rest, Rowy did some good thing but boy jeez he butchered the thing, would call his game average, not great not bad but middling and that's fair.

Clearly not a popular opinion and he's still very new to the team but I'm feeling the same way about Hanily so far. He tries hard but he hasn't been having much of an influence.

He's dropped a mark inside 50 every game so far.

They played back-to-back games in temperatures over 30 degrees. I'd say that would have taken its toll.
