😂 SDK wasn't dropped

Following his knee injury against Adelaide he underwent surgery; like plenty of others before him he returned via the VFL rather than throwing him straight into the seniors upon return. Without that knee injury or surgery SDK would have played out the season in the seniors

Mannagh had played 2 senior games, including one as sub before undertaking the usual path for new draftees at Geelong with a decent run in the VFL to assist in development - it's not like he was an established senior player at the time. Since being back into the senior team in rooms 17 last year, he hasn't found himself dropped to the VFL for form concerns
If he is playing full games in the VFL while the seniors are playing finals without him, it’s dropped.

So much Henry chat...

He will be fine. All our forwards are a little bit down in output early this year. Stengle and Cameron would both expect to hit the scoreboard a little more moving forward. We have a new mix down there, are only mid table for inside 50's and I expect everything to gel a bit moving forward. Cameron has barely been targeted inside 50 - i think Dangerfield is certainly drawing some footy. I wonder whether resting SDK or Stanley forward more often might free Ollie up a bit more. Cameron too. When Martin is fit and in form, I will certainly entertain O.Henry Selection discussions, but not just yet IMO. As a 21 yo, he threatened to take the game away from the lions - he missed a little training just before the start of the season with a back complaint and I expect him to improve as the year goes on.

My talking points from friday.

1. COS looks like he is growing each week. Best game yet. Once Henry and Kolo are back, I'd be excited to see him exposed to wing and even forward as part of his development. Just happy he is getting games and showing he will be a player.

2. Zuthrie, Atkins, Lawson, Bowes and Dempsey both played their best games this year which I am taking as a sign that we are warming into the year and that our best footy isn't too far away.

3. Stanley looks to be moving well, I'd give him a few weeks whilst Blics/Henry/Kolo have fitness issues. Will be a good period to have a look at what it might look like if Conway can get fit.

4. Danger's best game as a consistent forward threat - I hope he's building to an easter monday bag. He is moving well and looks dangerous, I think we need to persist with his forward dominant split and hope that Holmes, Smith and Maybe Stewart can start dominating games from the middle.

5. Depth looks to be building - Clark, Stevens and Whiltshire all had good games in the two's. Duncan will play at some stage and Knevitt, Blicavs, Conway, Bews, Kolo, Martin aren't too far away.

Two very big weeks ahead - would be happy to play well in both and walk away at 3-3 in good health and building.

Going to need a few tall defenders against the crows.
IMO it’s a bit of a red herring to match tall forward lines height-for-height. Structure is important, but there are only so many one-on-one marking contests up forward to win. If you can get enough aerial support to break even, you can burn them on the way out.

SDK only missed two weeks of footy (rounds 22 and 23), it was hardly a major injury. By the time the prelim rolled around he'd played two VFL games and was still not selected.

Then went in for surgery as soon as the season was over. He probably could play but clearly wasn’t physically right for AFL
Plenty of players go in for surgery as soon as the season is over. He was out of the side because of form not injury.

Not sure about that. Hope so- but reckon in Adelaide, they’ll be a pretty imposing forward line.
Do think it’s a good time to be playing them- 5 day break off warm conditions.

What match-ups would you go for v the Crows in form tall forwards?

Agree with this.

My take with Henry and Neale -

One of the few things the Demons did well last night was to run back into defensive 50, and establish their set piece blocks on marking fowards, freeing up May for intercept marks. Lots of unpunished holds and blocks made it more difficult. Even Hawkins struggled against that sort of defence.

Like most marking forwards, Henry and Neale like an open forward 50, with room to get separation, lead and be ‘one out’. In last Qtr Melbourne players were gassed and couldn’t get back and Neale got involved.

Not a total excuse for either, particularly the more experienced Henry, as the good forwards find a way to beat the blocks, get separation and at least bring the ball to ground.

I disagree - Stanley is good for a game here and there, but play him three weeks in a row and he'll play his way out of the side, especially at his age.

Keep Stanley in reserve to come in for a half-dozen games during the year, to give SDK a chop-out, or fill in when Blitz, SDK or Neale are unavailable.

We don't have the cattle in the middle to carry an extra tall, and with all respect to Rhys, he's not the kind of tall you sacrifice numbers in the middle for.

He was out of the side due to injury and was clearly not 100% fit when they gave him a run in the VFL to see if he could prove his fitness for senior finals

After hurting his knee against Adelaide he underwent minor knee surgery designed to give him a chance of playing again last year, and while he ran out for two VFL finals, it was clear to anyone watching that he wasn't close to 100%. Need to remember that the first VFL final was 4 weeks after his injury - very rarely do we have players return from surgery straight into the seniors

Once the season was over he underwent further surgery on the issue

So it's quite clear he wasn't right at the end of last season and it was his knee injury keeping him out of the seniors and not his form

Ollie Henry doesn’t need a spell.

He is a crucial player for us. Has to play, every single game.
Remember, it was the same all last year and he came out and nearly won a Prelim off his own boot. Finished the year with 37 goals after 41 the year before. Finished 8th in the B&F. At 22 years old playing as an undersized key forward.

I think he's going to be just fine but will inevitably have some flat spots.

Contesting against bigger opponents in the air.
Yes the claim that he's not competing in the air is the most bizarre. He's the player that flies more than any other, often against better judgement. Doing it at, what 188cm or something, is the reason he often loses those contests. But it's the effort to compete in the air that the coaches would love.

Undersized. Thats the problem. And he cant fix it no matter how hard he tries. Was literally pulling out of marking comtests when it was his turn to go last night. Did it multiple times. And he is supposed to be a marking player.

He should not be playing the role he plays. Could be a gun. But not in his current role.

He should and he will continue to. Third tall is a hugely important role for structure and if you can kick nearly 80 goals doing it in two seasons you are doing fine at it.

I agree and disagree with this.

Yes he is undersized some of the time. Usually when he is trying to contest a long down the line kick against a bigger key defender. But he rarely pulls out of a contest.

I agree he could be playing a different role. He is currently playing a hybrid marking/running forward role which is probably the hardest role in the game. He will look bad if he is stuck wrestling a gorilla, or if he runs 100m to create an option and doesn’t get used.

But he looks great when he can fly against a same size opponent, or if he is rewarded for his gut running and gets used. You will also often see him in the corner of screen when he have a fast transition dragging his man away from the play to allow others to work into the space he creates.

His is a very unselfish game at the moment. In 2-3 years he will get his rewards when he is playing a more traditional forward role and he has a bit more size.

I get all that. But he is hardly Robinson Crusoe in trying to deal with injuries at the end of the afl season. Plenty of players nurse injuries to the end of the season while still playing at a high level and then go in for surgery as soon as the season ends.

There are only 2 relevant questions here:
1. Was SDK playing full games at the end of last season?
2. Was he selected to play in the AFL at the end of last season or was he left out of the team?

At the end of last season Stanley was our preferred ruckman, kolo/henry were our preferred key defenders and blitz was our preferred KPD/2nd ruck. SDK could not find his way into the team in any of those roles.

I like SDK, I think he has potential and I don’t think we are doing him any favours trying to turn him into a ruck when he is clearly a better key defender. But he was clearly surplus to requirements at the end of last season.

Same height as Bowes
