O Henry does so much work that never gets on the stats sheet. But his role is crucial. There is a reason he is one of the first picked every week.
All players do much running for no reward but that's not enough, it's expected. He's not picked due to his running as that's his weakest trait. He needs to provide more or Polkinghorne and Wiltshire will get their chance

I get all that. But he is hardly Robinson Crusoe in trying to deal with injuries at the end of the afl season. Plenty of players nurse injuries to the end of the season while still playing at a high level and then go in for surgery as soon as the season ends.

There are only 2 relevant questions here:
1. Was SDK playing full games at the end of last season?
2. Was he selected to play in the AFL at the end of last season or was he left out of the team?

At the end of last season Stanley was our preferred ruckman, kolo/henry were our preferred key defenders and blitz was our preferred KPD/2nd ruck. SDK could not find his way into the team in any of those roles.

I like SDK, I think he has potential and I don’t think we are doing him any favours trying to turn him into a ruck when he is clearly a better key defender. But he was clearly surplus to requirements at the end of last season.
Bloody hell.
SDK was not fit enough. And he's a kid. Did you want to bury him?

Even last night he was patchy, but he was ok. It was like his first day at high school when it came to going back to defence.

Scott has said that using him in the ruck is to increase his skillset.

I didn’t want to bury him. I agreed that he was not in our best 22 at the end of last season and I strongly advocated at the time that Stanley was our best option.

You are misunderstanding the argument. The poster was trying to argue that SDK was not dropped. My argument was he was clearly dropped because he was playing full vfl games and not getting selected in the afl.

Scott may be trying to develop his skill set in the ruck. He did the same thing with Hawkins in his early days. And it may pay off in the long run. But he is a free agent in 2 seasons, so we may just be developing him for another club’s benefit.

I would prefer that we just let him be an awesome key defender, but our current team has such a gaping hole in the ruck that we need to get creative. SDK is the collateral damage from our current list situation. I wouldn’t be surprised at all if he gets jack of it and walks when he is a free agent.

Thats not dropped mate.

He didn't get back into the side. Therefor he cant have been dropped.

He just wasn't selected. Because as you stated "he was not in our best 22 at the end of last season"
And in my 'opinion', he wasn't selected because he wasn't fit.

Was his form down before the injury? Yes. But he wasn't 'dropped'.

And holy frigging moly.
I'm sorry, I skipped your last sentence.

He just re-signed !!!!!!

How long did he sign for? He strategically signed the length of contract that will take him to free agency.

It was a contract of convenience for both him and the club, and nowhere near a long term commitment from either side.

So if he isn’t in our best 22, and isn’t selected in the AFL, but was fit enough to be considered for selection what do you call that?

Managed?
Rested?
What?

You can call it omitted if you want. But that is just another word for dropped.

A Win is a Win, but not all Wins are Good
Was a downright ugly win, but I'll take it.
The Cats team was not going perfectly.
No slick transition from turnover to goal.
Lots of fumbles and missed opportunities
Bad decisions and One too many disposals
Instead Cats relied on pressure and pride
A victory through grit and determination
Comprised of bursts of individual efforts
Stanley battled hard in the ruck contest
Stewart played with a pronounced limp
Jezza went back to help out the defence
Danger bobbed up forward for 3 goals
Mannagh seemed to link up everywhere
Close found some form and got involved
O'Sullivan won in the air and on ground.
Mullin chased Spoiled and ran forward
O'Connor took a speccy and was composed
Every player chimed in for their cameo

Signs were there that form is improving
Hope Cats back it up v Crows on Thurs

Henry was arguably the worst player on the ground. Can't believe people are arguing he had a good game
Needs a rocket. I was in his corner last few games but he is sailing close to wind ATM. Unless he is doing some other stuff that the coaches like and we can’t see.
What happened to that Polkinghorne guy? He apparently likes a goal or two and can clunk a few marks. Big wraps on him from the guys who have coached him over in SA. Maybe give him a run and Ollie can have a holiday in the twos..

😆 when you disagree on someone on here, you keep fighting with your posting until the other person who's had enough arguing against you..
I thought a discussion board was for discussion :)

Anyway, if you don’t want to discuss whether Stanley deserves best 22 selection, that’s fine. No winners and losers in a BigFooty argument

I'd suggest there's only 1 relevant question:

1. Without the knee injury & subsequent surgery, would SDK have been out of the team in the first place?

I'm guessing that Hawkins & Guthrie playing in the VFL semi final means they were dropped from the seniors 🤔

Remember, it was the same all last year and he came out and nearly won a Prelim off his own boot. Finished the year with 37 goals after 41 the year before. Finished 8th in the B&F. At 22 years old playing as an undersized key forward.

I think he's going to be just fine but will inevitably have some flat spots.
My concerns around Henry are that he seems to have the mentality of a key forward while being a medium forward.

He doesn’t seem to like the idea of two way hard running up and down the ground.

What he does when he is on song is very good.. impacts deep, can do some mercurial 1v1 stuff that makes you think wow what a gun… but when his off, he doesn’t contribute much.

Has a bit he needs to learn, but what he is overall is an immense talent.

I would probably prefer to play him and cameron as the two marking options and drop neale the way he is going. Make us a more mobile fleet footed outfit. Bring in Wiltshire for neale

Neale has a lot of huge concerns if he is up to the standard at all. Probably give him a few more weeks to decide if we pursue with a 202cm key forward averaging 3 marks 6 touches and 1 goal a game getting intercepted and taken to the cleaners ever game.

You can’t carry that sort of player all year.

I’m a Henry fan because of his scoreboard impact but also critical of him because he can be lazy.

He wasn’t lazy last night. He was putting in a lot of effort, didn’t get the reward but I noticed a lot more effort just to try and at least get to contests that he might not normally make because he is, as we know, a more ‘uncontested’ player.

It didn’t lead to results last night but I liked that he took initiative and thought ‘it’s not happening for me the way it normally does so I’m going to push harder and make more effort’ and he managed as a consequence to create some scoring chances (that he didn’t convert) and put pressure on.

That wouldn’t have gone unnoticed by the coaches

Neale at least competes - that's a big one for me. Especially when Steven May is an absolute gun defender patrolling the backline.

Henry does not.
Tbh I don’t care about effort or competing, I care about output.

How long thru a season can you carry a key forward producing this??
