No it is umpiring the laws. He wasn’t in the contest. Ran in after so ‘incidental’ contact is not allowed. Only in the contest can he ‘push’ when the ball is his sole objective. It wasn’t he was miles away. The 50 is paid when the play is impeded or delayed. It is also paid if in normal play it would be considered a free kick. It is after all just a free kick. In this case a push in the back. Two hands pushing motion. Laird by pushing delayed Byrne jones the opportunity to play on and pushed him in the back. It is a frighin free kick and 100 times over correctly adjudicated. Yes it is ‘soft’ but it was 100% there. Laird was dumb. Seriously all of you if the roles were reversed you would be moaning your heads off if we hadn’t got a 50 for that. Umpires were not cheating.
As I said, happens many times in a game without penalty. How about some consistency in interpretation?

Hadn't thought much about Thilthorpe spending time in ruck until raised here. He is actually very good in there and could possibly become the best going around. So, it raises the question do you want Gawn or do you want Carey? He's good but you can't have both in one player. I choose Carey. Find someone else to fill in the ruck position.
Carey. Plenty of premierships sides have had an average ruck, hardly any don't have an elite forward

Nicks is sounding a bit like the Federal Liberal Party - nothing wrong with our policies, just not enough people voted for us - oh and those mean oppo types did bad things to us.
nah, he is more like the Victorian labor party...continually rewarded for failure by those with the power to reward it

Can understand criticism of the last 10 mins , I thought we took wrong options a few times when in possession with the milera one being the glaring one

People seem to forget we kept Port goalless for 30 mins prior to that which won us the game , no one seems to get any credit for that ! It’s just all negative on here sometimes . Quite remarkable we didn’t let them score for 30 mins considering how they dominated the middle part of the ground

Re TT behind the ball I think poster makes a good point in that we didn’t want to drag Alir I50

I think we were pretty happy with Dawson being the guy

As for Keane that’s twice he’s done that , one of his first games for us against Hawthorn in Tassie he did a very similar thing . Funnily enough Rankine won us that game too after a quiet one overall
That 30 minutes was very good.

The criticism is that our coaching staff made a tactical change to move from that style and essentially park the bus in Port's forward half.

Allow Port repeat i50 as we had fewer receivers up the ground.

Giving Port that opportunity with easier repeat i50s means all it takes is a couple of dumb errors (Laird) or fluke play (Finlayson) to steal the game. We are lucky Rozee stuffed up his clutch moment.

Our team plays its best footy when we rely on our defensive unit to defend then be able to connect with receiverd outside the D50 and isolate our forwards.

Not defend through sheer bulk numbers.

Do you know why I disliked your post? It's because you come on after wins and act like an obnoxious little fanboi. The poster you were belittling had gone to the effort of providing his thoughts in a comprehensive post, and you use words like "moronic" to counter it.

Did it occur to you that the game may not have been close if Ranks and co didn't get torched in the midfield? Sure, his class up forward in the last was elite, but he struggled (again) defensively all night with a top class midfield opponent.

It's hardly moronic to point that out. One might say it's simple-minded (ie moronic) to have such a one dimensional view as yours.
Oh yeah the guy that won us the game should have won us the game earlier or easier

🤣

I think our ball use in that period was main issue and some of that came with that defensive attitude

Milera was obvs one but also some ball we won at half forward and wing we coughed up a few times poorly

I think we conceded at least one more goal than we should have in that last 10 mins , port were always going to come hard after not scoring for half an hour and we allowed it to be too close in the end

Frankly, Milera and Laird should be taken out and shot for their last-quarter absolute howlers.
There was nothing wrong with slowing down the game, just our particular execution of it.

If Laird and Milera had abstained from their brain-fades, this would have all gone to plan and been a very comfortable win.
I thought the game was won at 21 pts up, but the ridiculous Milera effort obviously gave the scum an intravenous shot of morale and a great sniff. Laird compounded that.

Part of the problem going into a "lockdown" mode too is we have guys like Milera/Laird that aren't quick decision makers. So even if you've got free guys you can work it too short they rarely take the first option and that gives the opposition time to structure for our down the line bomb.

So we end up with guys like Milera/Laird who can't make quick decisions and Hinge and Keane who often go for the riskiest play possible and it leaves our back half players getting into all sorts of sorts when Nicks wants to shut it down.

Very much this!

We went defensive waaay to early but having watched the replay, we actually were weathering the storm quite well until these two insane blunders from allegedly senior players.

We'd successfully fought for field position and finally had the chance for a deep entry, chewing more time off the clock and potentially scoring ourselves.

Milera's insane brain fade ****ed all that and put us on the back foot for the remainder of the game and Laird topped it off by handing them a goal and momentum. Both should be dropped for their efforts...

There is an unbelievable summary on the Fox Footy website, which is normally pretty good.

When discussing Port's game, it's described as a 34-minute last-quarter flurry that would have defeated nearly everyone else in the competion! There's no mention of our game-winning burst in the first half of the quarter, and the fact that we then slowed the game up to "ensure" the win. Unbelievable!

That's exactly the problem with slowing down with so much time left, you make a mistake early then it give them more time to punish you.

It would be nice if we had a backup ruck option in the team so that whether we use Thilthorpe or not could be a situational call. He's very good in there and I don't mind using it to rotate the forward line options or to get him involved in the game, but it shouldn't be the only option.

Would be amazing if Curtin could have the occasional stint in there.

I can't recall if the "slow game down" sign came out before or after that Milera skill error.

But I do wonder if after seeing that Nicks panicked and wanted to just shut the game down. Fearing Port may score on the counter from more skill errors.

What he did compounded the issue by basically handing the ball back to Port each time our defenders cleared it.

Stupid

Port are yet to win a Final quarter this year.

Based on that Nicks should have had the confidence to keep pressing. As every team has against them this year in the Final quarter.

This is another factor that makes his tactical decision a nonsense.

We did the opposite to what every team has done against Port this year.

Their last quarters are when you pile on goals. We started that way, should have finished the game that way.

I don't think Curtin is the right option. Maybe to take the occasional forward stoppage like Walker does, but not in the midfield. We're worried about brick shithouse Riley Thilthorpe getting injured in there, why would we cast our high draft pick 20 year old to the wolves by making him stand there while men several inches and 15kg heavier than him jump into him?

ROB's primary strength is his fitness and durability. Until we replace him, he should be taking the vast majority of stoppages outside of our F50.

This is my question though - who is it? I don't think we want Walker or Fogarty doing it around the ground. Murray has done it before if he's in the team, but he's currently not and it would also cause some potential defensive issues. I believe the only other person on our list with AFL hitouts is Borlase.

ROB should be taking the vast majority for sure but he will be on the bench sometimes, so who is the best fit if we don't want it to be Thilthorpe? I'm not sure if Curtin can do it or not but it would certainly simplify things a lot if he's playing around the ball anyway.
