Autopsy Round 10, 2025: Suns get it done against plucky Hawks

We kicked truly for most of the game but we did not get enough out of our third quarter dominance. Burned the ball so many times going inside 50, kicks not making the distance etc.

We should have been well in front at the last change.

They kicked 5 in the last. As much as it hurts to say, they ran the game out better than us.

There was one centre bounce in the last that was a momentum killer. Moore pounces on the loose ball, loses his feet, and can't lock it in. They clear it and kick a goal from it. Killed us.
i'm not sure they did, to me it actually looked like we were the fitter team. in every single quarter our periods of dominance started toward the latter stages of the qtr. even in the last when they had control for longer, we still made a push in the last 5-6 minutes

He should take time off then to right it. We can cover him down back and Calsher will get better with more game time. Let Moorey steer the side from the guts and let Sicily get cherry ripe.
if he was going to he would've already vs one of Richmond, Melb or WCE – or he would've been rested for this trip. So I think we're just gonna endure it until the bye which hopefully gives him enough time to get better. The 9-day break before the Lions on sat should help too

DE% last night - Moore 64%, Worpel 60%, D’Ambrosio 58%, Newcombe 69%, Weddle 68%. For the Suns, Noble was going at 63%. Presuming all those players were liabilities with ball in hand last night also?

Cherry picking stats is fine but from the eye test Morrison wasn’t a stand out last night nor was he lowering his colours. He got the job done as he usually does.
Personally I think Harry is putting together a sneaky good year.

His disposal is a little off this year compared to previous years (although you could say the same about a lot of our players) but his hardness at the ball and man has stood out.

Seems every week he is sticking a big tackle to win an important free kick for us in front of goal, etc.

Normally don’t get drawn into it but can we all agree David King is an absolute kent.. Campaigning against the frees we got on SEN this morning- did he actually watch the game??

Free kick count was 11-5 in the 1st quarter- also some dodgy ones their way in the 2nd that set up the suns with a 4 goal+ lead that was always going to be difficult to peg back…

On top of that - Suns given the lead in the last quarter with a free kick against Scrimshaw right in of goal that could be one of the most disgraceful game altering decisions in AFL history… drives ya nuts doesn’t it

I would like to be in the coach’s box to understand why Noble was just allowed to roam free for the night and have 36 and 1000 metres gained.

Was his opponent pushed up the ground to help with an extra number around the ball while we were getting smashed in clearances?

Would love to know the reasoning why nobody went near him for the night.
Listen to Mitchell's presser

Bringing Calsher back too soon was a mistake, still underdone. We have the best tagger in the league yet barely use him. Thought that Finn could have tagged Anderson or maybe Rowell who slaughtered us in the middle. C mac was well below his best last night - needs a stint at Box Hill. Thought Ned played pretty well all things considered.

Will be a huge relief bringing Ned back. Ward and Mckenzie showed their usual glimpses of talent but don't have anywhere near the physical presence that Nash does. Worpel stands taller with Nash around as well. Overall we showed great heart to nearly pinch it. We are going ok

Morrison is least of our problems. We need to get Croc and Sic going, if Sic is injured then he needs to rest up and get right cos he’s a complete liability at moment and making life alot tougher on the rest out there right now. Call it what it is.

Ppl tagged me in the gameday thread so i am responding here. Umpires don't affect the result. You only have to look at gameday thread here and then gameday thread on the main board to realise the polarising nature of paying more attention to the umpires than the actual game i really enjoyed the game we went up there with a purpose and nearly came away with a famous win. I think this whole site would be better if there was less umpire whingeing. I mean the game day threads shite and mainly about who got a free kick.
Hard to avoid it when the ****ing commentators don’t shut the **** up about it

I think that's half the problem to be honest. I don't think about umpiring nearly half as much when I'm at the game in person and don't have these clowns dribbling on in the background.
You can't watch a Hawthorn game on TV now without every Hawthorn free kick being greeted with ''drew the free kick" from so many of them behind the mic. Montagna spent the whole night talking about free kicks.

So I'm gutted but not disappointed. Thought we saw some great performances last night. The #1 player we were missing was Nash. He is such a big body at stoppages - we saw Rowell and Anderson bursting through time and time again and we missed the giant Irishman throwing his weight around.

Loved Jai's game, of course. For a mid he takes a bloody good contested mark and has such an all rounded game.

Wardy is starting to put a block of games together and show why he was such a high draft pick. His acceleration out of stoppages is amazing to watch, and that kick he made across his body at full tilt to Chol was a thing of beauty! He also has a giant tank and ran the game out well.

Ginni, HMO, Moorey were good in the middle of the ground too. Scrim was solid in his first game back.

OMG the Wiz had me punchdancing in the lounge room - I can't wait for the game he bags a dozen! You KNOW it's coming.

I love Croc, but for pitys sake please give him some dev time at Box Hill. He is best 23 when firing but is fumbly and doesnt beeline the ball - waits for the opposition to pick it up and tries to tackle (and usually gets brushed off). Obviously the game has moved on from our wave running last year and he's either not coping with the new situation, or he's underdone.

You'd think someone who is 8ft10 and can eat apples straight from trees like a giraffe would be able to take a bloody mark - right Ned Reeves?

Someone please donate stemcells to Sicily for whatever injury he is carrying.

It was a bloody good game and if we took our chances we would have won. Having said that, our kicking for goal was much better today.

Surprised by the criticism of CJ cos I thought he was pretty good last night. Decision making and ball handling seemed good in the conditions and I generally felt confident when he had the ball.

I know there was the high profile lack of impact on a contest early in the last which led to a Suns goal and which Cornes highlighted. But that’s the only bad one from him I can remember (and yes it was significant).

But I’ll have to go back and watch the replay to see what I missed. This is a very rare event (me watching a replay where we lost) but actually looking forward to it given what a spectacular game it was and how much we fought it out.

LONG may it continue. I hope the opposition are as obsessed with free kicks we get, and their minds are distracted.

I thought GC got a couple of questionable ones in front of goal last night, no mention………

Players flop from all teams in the centre square and throw their arms out and no one says a word.

Ginnivan gets one across his throat from Holman and it’s a tactic and needs to be highlighted.

There’s a reason not many people like King and Montagna, even inside AFL circles.

Anderson, Rowell & Miller in the top five ranked players. Newcombe was ranked 1 but had very little support. That's the game right there. Nash, Day & Meek would've been massive. Also, Sicily is carrying a groin injury. He was asked about it before the game & brushed it off! It explains a lot. Rest him.
100% rest him. With Scrim and Dear back we can cover him (at least this version of him - no one can cover peak Sic).

Yep, it annoyed the hell out of me straight after the game when he said something like "great play from whoever it was that tackled Watson at the end there, not even sure who it was, but it was a great play because Watson was trying to get a free kick". No he wasn't, he was trying to break through to kick a goal, you utter muppet.

Suns were pretty much at full strength while we were half doz shy. Could have won it but didn't. No injuries a bonus. IMO the match fitness gained from playing in Darwin will be invaluable down the track. Reckon if Sis is injured hes dropped untill hes good, no matter how long it takes. Coldly speaking hes more of a liability than a plus at present. As for umpiring its a farce across the board for which the AFL is entirely responsible. Who could have foreseen that fast tracking AFLW, without the proper infrastructure and necessary personal to facilitate its implementation would lead to having to fill spaces with who was available rather than who is qualified, Gil. It seems to me that at the moment its the media running the AFL, and doing a better job. The fixture, Willie Rioli, Lachie Schultz, all according to the AFL, nothing to see hear. The whole admin needs a deep dive independent review.

There are a few that just don’t seem to have enough strength at the contest with weak attack on the footy and half hearted tackle pressure. Harry, Ned and Finn have flashes but seem to go to water in the one-on-ones. I fear they may continue to be fringe dwellers when we’re in healthy list phases. A shame, but there is no sentimentality in footy, I guess.

The pile on Harry every week is ridiculous.

He had a good game and has had a very good season.

Harry weak in the contest?

Good Lord.

Blokes will be dropped for Brisbane - Harry won't be one of them.

He is best 22 on merit.

I know retrospect is always 20/20 but I do wonder if we should have rested of one Meek and Gunston against WCE and Richmond respectively given we were likely to win both those games anyway and then played them both last night. It's possible that we would have won all three games if we had.
