He nearly had more tackles than disposals

That would be OK if he got the ball 25+ times
Was the only player out there who could stick a tackle, besides our midfield was hardly the problem. Our backline is so far from where it was in 2023 it's actually hard to watch. Can't win the ball back to save ourselves, and when we do we're giving it to some of the worst ball users in the AFL. McLennan and O'Connell are 188cm key defenders the way they play, I really hope they improve but playing them both completely handcuffs us. Absolute deers in headlights.

We shouldn’t be surprised about how this year is panning out should we ? The main thing we need to address from last year was our midfield and as good as Mc crea is we’re still way behind the others.
But the lines that saved us last year have been decimated, a couple of them self-inflicted.
Mids -
Clark - poise , skill
Pou - was gonna be that burst player that we so desperately needed. underdone now but mostly out all year so far

Forwards -
King , Membrey and Butler all out so far this year . That’s pretty much the whole forward line from last season except Higgins

Backs - Howard , Battle
So that leaves Wilkie and caminiti

Alike the start of last season was the perfect storm, this year is the same , just masked by the fact that we won a couple early.

Team selection seems below par though considering heath hasn’t been brought in to compete up forward after Keeler failed.
it feels like Chinese whispers now where we have chipped away at proper team structure as well as obvious lack of talented depth .

In his presser Ross mentioned Macrae getting a knee in the back and needing scans.

I didn’t notice anything.

Hopefully he’s ok.

Ross not sounding overly positive re. Macrae.

Didn't see it, but copped a knee in the back?

It's not easy being a small club. A small fish in a big pond.
What I mean is, there's really 2 ways players come into your club.

1. You draft them or sign them. From somewhere - national draft, rookie draft, mid-season draft. SANFL. Etc.

2. They decide to come to your club. (Trade or free agency). If it's a trade, obviously you need to determine a suitable deal with the other club.

Overlaying this is you need strong talent identification and player development. Regardless where the players come from, you need to identify talent, work out which players will thrive in your system, work out which players have a future in the AFL. And you need to develop them once they arrive.

But with those two fundamental levers, being a small club at Marvel puts us at a disadvantage. Players are less likely to choose us, when there's 9 teams in Melbourne.

The only ways to make up for this is:

1. Elite identification and development- so you can nail the first fundamental lever (draft/sign) and overachieve in the second (trade/FA) despite your inherent disadvantage.

2. Create a strong culture and points of difference to help overcome the disadvantage of being a small club.

Let's be honest. The next Tom Lynch, Jeremy Cameron, Chris Judd, Jason Horne-Francis- the next big FA, or big name demanding a trade isn't coming to St Kilda. So we have to make up for it in other ways

The reaction after this game is laughable and pathetic.

Fact is, we're the younger team. And playing in Perth in front of 50k.

The only reason we were favourites is WC's been underachieving and we've been better than expected.

If this game had been played in round 1 West Coast would've been favourites. They gained confidence from last week, and were due a win. 0-10 starts rarely happen in modern AFL.

I was almost 50/50 on tipping West Coast. Stuck with Saints but the result is unsurprising.

We've had a solid opening 9 games, better than most people expected. So seeing this level of self flaggelation after a loss in Perth just shows how over-reactive people are. Short-term bias.

Or......... We lost to a team that hasn't won a game all year because we were absolutely shithouse and people have had a gut full of us being absolutely shithouse

In terms of soul crushing losses post rebuild (2013) where does this rank?

v Port 2021
and
v Essendon 2017

probably the only two that stand out this much?
Going down to the dogs 100+ in 2021 got us an open letter but with four years of ****all between then and now I think this might top the lot.

Really hard to feel any hope at all whatsoever considering how many false dawns we've had 2016 onwards.

True
So one of the only ways you do that when you know you are rebuilding and not a genuine challenger is to ensure you maximise draft selection options. That means get the highest pick you can and don’t pick a spud (often aided, not guaranteed by getting an earlier choice).
Anyhoo today was bad enough without worrying about how dumb we’ve been

As I’ve said, if we have Nas signature already which I believe we do. Basset will roll it out this week to appease.

2016 seems too recent.
Really hard to feel any hope whatsoever considering how many false dawns we've had 1966 onwards.

Despite getting pantsed some big performances in the VFL today.
Clark: 27, 11 tackles and a goal
Boxshall: 30, 9 clearances and a goal
Jones: 38, 17 contested and 9 clearances
Heath: 19, 15 contested, a goal and 35 hitouts
Keeler: 15, 8 marks (2 contested) playing down back

All is not lost my friends, we live to fight on next week

I binged watched the 2nd series of Severance on Saturday.

I want my Outie to hate football.....

For the love of all that is good. Coaches, please focus all training just on weights, tackling and handball drills. We are embarrassing at all 3 of those minimums so let's start with the lowest bar.

Riding the bus home surrounded by chirpy Eagles supporters wanting to "talk" is my own personal hell. Im angry. Excuses aside, this a game we should have won and comfortably, end of.

Saw the list before the game and thought Ross was taking the piss. Too many youngsters, too short or underdone. Ross's presser admitted as such. This is on him. Speaking of which, noticed his MO at the moment is to spend the first two minutes spitting as many random stats as he can, muddying the waters and chewing up time. Kind of get it I suppose, but he looked like a man under pressure, as well he should, that was atrocious.

Does playing at marvel have an impact on us playing at different grounds?

Seriously we look like a completely different team away from marvel that has no idea how to move the ball?

I was at the opposite end of the ground and thought, when I get home I've got to watch that on the replay.....watched the replay and yep didn't get near it, but the commentators also said nothing about it.
it's a free everyday except in WA for unrealistic attempt, never touched the ball, but like insufficient intent, it's only paid 1 way
