Review R13: The Good, the Bad and the Ugly vs. Brisbane Lions

Good: Winning thanks to Brisbane awful kicking at goal.
Bad: The constant bad decision making all night, either the coach isn't picking it up, the players aren't listening to him or both.
Ugly: The fact it was almost guaranteed Brisbane would end up with the ball every time the ball was kicked to a contest.

We are still the panicky, deferring to a teammate to do the hard stuff team from the start of the year. Now that we've won using that same style, we won't change our ways for the rest of the year. You only get a few let offs and Brisbane let us off. Less than a minute to go, we kick the ball up the wing and it was obviously going to be called deliberate out of bounds, yet still with the time it took for the Brisbane player to get the ball and rebound we couldn't stop Brisbane from having loose men all over the field to have another crack at the goals.
This team got lucky and don't appear desperate enough even when the time comes to give it your all and there's less than a minute on the clock.
I did not enjoy watching that game, getting lucky is not good enough against the best teams.

Good:

• 4 quarter effort, lot of pressure early even if we weren't converting.
• Curtin I thought was his best game for us, was really strong along the wing and looks at home.
• Keays is a superstar as a forward.
• Rachele's goal on the boundary really was massive.
• ANB's pressure and gut running is huge.

Bad:

• Listening to Gary Lyon
• The defeatists on this site. Wait for a result before spitting the dummy.

Really Good : Laird making up for it and getting the holding the ball decision, that, is really impressive.

Excellent Keaysy, I still cover my eyes when he has a set shot but he has really covered his poor parts of play and has gone to another level. A bit more awareness with the ball and he would be a seven figure player...and not barrely seven either.

Super excellent: Dawson standing up in the last quarter when it meant something

It's a clear coaching directive to approach the game like we did at the end there. Just kicking to the boundary line over and over....

Dawson had a captain's final quarter. He knew he had a down game and took it by the scruff.

As someone who watched him enough to know he was good but not enough to know how good, I can imagine Dees supports rolling their eyes for a decade over how criminally underrated he is. He doesn't give 1 percenters, those were 0.001 percenters

We had possession from the kick in and just bomb to the right of the screen. That's clearly the strategy as he used it against Port Power when we had the lead for the last 10 minutes.

you need to ask how that happened, we went from dominating with 5 goals straight. To not touching it all and just going vanilla down the line....we had all the momentum and just handed it back.

If Nicks plan was to try and keep the game tight for 3 quarters and then let us open it in the 4th when the weather was clear then that was very smart and worked perfectly.

However once again once we got 2 goals up we reverted back to that game style that got us 3 goals behind to start with and continually had everyone fly and left no one at ground level, which did not worked perfectly. So much like Nicks tenure, it was a mixed bag and we won because Brisbane didn't execute at the end.

I think we tried to attack for longer compared to the Port game. Brisbane did a great job intercepting in the centre of the ground.

We probably went defensive a couple of minutes too early.

No issues shutting the game down with 4 minutes left. I actually thought we did a reasonable job killing time in the last few mins
