Was there a single Crows supporter who wasn't on the Curtin train immediately after the draft? We were all excited as hell at the prospect of having traded up to recruit a potential star. The only question was whether we would pull the trigger on him as a midfielder early, or break him in as a defender.
The initial reaction from most was that he didn’t want to be here.

My favourite part was when he said he didn’t know any of our players as he didn’t really follow the league.

“I just met Jordan Dawson. Yeah he’s the captain”.

I think everyone recognised that Curtin wasn't going to come in and dominate on day one.
I'll admit that I had no idea which, before others in here comment, is often the case.
I just didn't know much about his background etc so the hubbub about his recruiting was as interesting to me as it was mystifying.
I didn't pay much attention, except there was a lot of noise about his use as sub and where his best poz is/was.
Jeffcrowe had him on a wing from the start
If the above is correct, it's very astute, kudos. I was at the NM game this year (AO) and Curtin looked lost (as opposed to his game on Sunday which was very confident and assured). I could see he was a good mark and did not really notice him until the last 4 weeks or so,
BUT
Sunday's game was a real eye-opener. Curtin was the obvious BoG, confirmed by the Coaches' votes and no doubt 3 Brownlow votes too.

Birth of a Star:
Remember Sunday's game, for Curtin's emergence.

Have a look at where Curtin is here, running in from the wing after a bounce with 6.10 left in the last.
At the time, I thought "If he takes possession, he's in strife" (2 Richmond players were bearing down on him):

BUT it's clear he's already sized it up and knows what to do. No problem for Curtin who takes possession and can see enough of a gap to raise his arms and burst between the 2 Richmond players who seem to be wrong-footed (look at his balance pushing off that R leg):

Clearing them, another Richmond player is at him but he feints right, steers left and is off at full pace:

takes a bounce, ignores Peatling on his left because he's already looked up and seen who he wants to kick to deep I50

Curtin's kick goes to the advantage of Thilthorpe who takes another strong contested mark and goals:

and that, fellow Crows fans, was jaw-dropping, Champagne football 🍾 🥂 . Brilliant. Exhilarating!
It was McLeod-like, Bontempelli-like, Dawson-like.
The reflexive planning and footy nous, the smooth movement, the speed, evasions and execution stamp Curtin as a future star of the Comp. and he's only 20, ffs .

He's gonna have to watch out, though, because Oppo Coaches with any brains will already be planning on how to quell his influence. Good luck with that.

Unfortunately it’s a trait of both butts and Keane to hold their opponents in almost every contest.
Doesn’t mean they deserve to get knocked out but we need to be prepared for them to give away a heap of frees one day.

Butts used to give away a lot of free kicks. I think that’s why nobody was keen to have him back. They certainly don’t deserve to get knocked out, but it’s something all defenders do.

Haha, yes. There was a concern that he looked entirely nonplussed about being selected by us. Which, as we now know, is just how Curtin looks 99% of the time, other than when celebrating goals.

But there were no question marks over his talent. There was a debate between the "wow, he's 197cm and a midfielder, he's going to be Patrick Cripps on steroids" group, and the "will he really play midfield at AFL level though? Perhaps we should have chosen a player who will definitely play midfield instead" group, but that was all.

I'll take nonplussed over stories of them crying in the bathroom. Was always hard to tell with McAsey cause he looked like he'd never smiled in his entire life.

Yeah I mentioned that after his post-game interview on the weekend. Dude had just kicked 2 and got 20+ and tore the game to shreds and he still sounded like he'd been asked for a book review on Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What Do You See?

I was in the third, NFI group ...

McAsey ... :sadv1:; did not look happy on Draft night at all.

McAsey " ... did not feature at the senior level during the 2021 or 2022 seasons before announcing his retirement in January 2023, citing personal reasons. Speaking to SEN's The Run Home, McAsey said that he lost his passion to play and perform at the elite level" (Google).

Lost his passion; anybody know how/why? :rolleyesv1:

And it turns out that was right, as he quit the game entirely shortly after
Played ammos last year for St,Kilda City but hasn't played this year at any level AFAIK.

There was talk several AFL clubs were monitoring him buyt obviously nothing came of it.

Outside of Covid
2011 vs Sydney in arctic conditions I reckon
Lowest crowd we ever had against Richmond at MCG was 19,226 at Round 18 2010. I was there for the game in the MCC and a big hail storm hit the ground in the second half with hail and rain and wind and lightning but the game finished in sunshine - typical Melbourne. It was freezing cold and windy all game. We lost by 20 after leading by 19 at half time. They kicked 10 goals to our 4 in the 2nd half - including during the hail storm. Typical Crows game.

Tex objected to Peatling's treatment and Ralphsmith threw him to the ground. When he got up, he took an airswing at RalphSmith from behind.
I thought they said the goal square? Maybe they meant square.
