Guys pls, stop with this 24-28 bait.. For Band 1/Band 2, the pick will be no worse than the compo we got for Buddy.

Now that was way unders.

So pick 19-20 at best which may go to 22-25 in draft. We don't snag a flag, the pick will be even better for Band 1.

Anyway we are not going to keep the pick, will be part of trades & well worth it.

And as I said, if we take it to draft that pick can always be traded to F1 as North did when they traded theirs for Richmond pick 30 or something last yr.

If we are bringing in a Top mid, we will surely have to lose one of our younger mids. Hard to see them all stay, so quite likely we don't match a Band1 contract.
Correct.
Assume we're packaging up the pick.

That one is a bit unfair on him IMO. Cripps had just ran across half the field to take up a defensive position because Watson's man was nowhere to be seen.

He was clearly cooked, and was wrong-footed by one of the most agile players in the league.

Watson is roasting 99/100 players in that position.
Cripps was running across the ground chasing watson.

Doesn't diminish Cripps as a player but it was just related to his defensive ability beyond tackles. And specifically in comparison to Nash, who would not be trailing that far behind on anyone. And does that defensive running all game.

Defending the spread is equally if not more important than preventing a clearance from a stoppage.

I definitely think there will be clubs that pay the free agency 'bonus' (overs) to try to get Worps, just like some did for Nash. However, I don't think any would throw anything near the numbers that Callaghan, LDU, TDK etc would get. He isn't in quite that class, and still think is greatly under-rated outside of Hawthorn on top of that as well.

Sam would highly value him, those types that work their arses off, get the most about their ability, great trainers, and then really elevate their career to another level. Sam wants talent, but more important its been about standards at training as well, as Worpel in Sam's words 'is a model of what can happen if you work hard'. Remember there was a time he was in the twos, not looking quite up with the pace of the game, and skills weren't at their best, before Burge came over. He and we have done unbelievably well to get him to the player he is now.

Also think Worps loves the club. No doubt he could make more and get more contact years, which makes sense to take the most time with the thinking and planning of this contact. Get Hawthorn to make their best possible offer, before signing. Nash got 1/2 extra years by doing this. But job satisfaction, leadership, playing with mates, club culture, right in a premiership window opening, means I'd be surprised if Worpel didn't sign, and even more surprised if we were 'happy' to let him to go for a very average pick for his talent.

I Reckon it would be around the $1m mark still. At a certain point the tax and investment strategies of each player may not move the needle much for an extra $200k but it’s still a bit of coin…

Does anyone else think that the strategy of paying big time overs to pry players away from clubs a little fraught with danger?

I'm assuming they are making these deals on the assumption the salary cap will get a big bump at the next CBA but I have heard that the next TV deal isn't going to be a huge increase like the last one was so that might not turn out to be correct.

Clubs could end up with spuds like McKay pulling in $1 mill a year taking up a big chunk of their cap for years.

Unless of course the AFL is giving them a sneaky word up to let them know what the are predicting the cap will be in the years to come?

Don't think I could watch Worps playing for the scum. Rather see him at the Scats.

Nah, Scum all the way.

Cats are already a very good side and would get better with Worpel. They are competing for top four spots for a while yet (until proven otherwise), and someone like Worpel would be great foil for Smith and Holmes. They are on the hunt for an inside midfielder.

Scum may come good someday, who knows. But we know the Cats are good now. **** em.

He's be great for the Cats, pretty much the exact player they need.

I agree the Scum will be irrelevant for many years yet, Worps going to the Cats will make our life harder.

Just think perryman triggered band 1 and he’s probably not in the top 200 players in the league. People overpay free agents, someone will pay up for worps
GWS will always get Band 1 if at all possible (or even if impossible).
Doesn't mean we will.

Looking at Collingwood tonight.

They have got some really important players from other clubs.

Membrey, McStay, Mitchell just for alliteration.

Lipinski, Hoskin-Wlliot, Howe, Long, Perryman, Crisp, Houston, Hill and Schultz also in their usual best 22.
