Review R17: The Good, the Bad and the Ugly vs. Melbourne Demons

Good:
  • Rankine’s return to form with the goals
  • best patch of 1 minute play: Curtin’s 2 last quarter pack marks and a goal. Incredible maturity for a young bloke. That was the match winning moment right there with the goal.
  • a good fight back in that 2nd quarter. In prior years we probably would have been blown away by some margin. Shows the team has character and finding different ways to win.

Bad:
  • friggin’ 2nd half umpiring.
  • Rachelle’s knee injury, hopefully only a hyperextension.
  • Tex left kick for goal in that last quarter, ball fell short and none of our players were there to contest near the goal! That was hella’ annoying!

TLDR - comical errors, but a great fight back in a sign of maturity, and in a good contested game.

Brodie Smith spent the entire match trying to miss his right foot, I mean seriously Nicks! He had more slices than I do on the golf course.

Also Lachlan Murphy had 2 touches in a half of football and was putrid, but we all knew that would happen

He absolutely cannot play in Rachele's spot while he's injured
Kept flying for everything, you know, because he's a tall and all, and ****ing it all up for everyone, our forwards mainly. 😡😡😡😡😡😡😡😡😡

Our forwards need to learn how to get in front of quality defenders.

Lever and May are quality and they really exposed this flaw. Especially in q1.

Yes our guys bombed it in a bit, which should actually help Fog and RT both being good high ball markers.

But the was.a lot of good I50.kicks the defenders picked off purely because they read the ball better and got font position and held it.

Soligo has been under performing imo and he's very satisfied with his long term deal. He hasn't had 30 disposals once this season. He needs to lift imo.

Laughable suggestion. Of course a role player wouldn't be playing if we had a star first round small forward in the side.

Out of the many role players we do have, Murphy is the wrong choice. It's insulting to say he gets games because the kids are shit

It’s not just insulting, it’s plainly wrong. You’d have to live drinking the Nix Aid to genuinely believe that all our recent draft picks are fails. We saw what happened last year when two shit players that weren’t ready were forced to be selected. Shock horror, they did perfectly well. Both much better than Murphy.

He was much, much improved today. Winning it in tight, and ball handling much better.

The one positive about Murphy playing today is that, hopefully, it will be impossible to play him as Rachele's replacement next week. Christ almighty he shits me, flying in like a lunatic at balls he has 0% chance of marking and either spoiling his teammates, or giving away free kicks. And then the one time it was his turn to go he stood on the ground and allowed Melbourne to take an uncontested mark!

Ugly game to watch overall. Melbourne should have been way in front early on, then we took control and ground out a mostly unattractive win. At least Rankine played his best game I've seen in ages... possibly best for the season so far? Soligo was quality as well.

Bank the four points, burn the replay, and put Murphy in some ****ing cement shoes.

So obvious at the ground. Not sure they just expected it to happen but they were constantly in the wrong spot or the delivery was poor.

Curtin turned that result twice. The punch and run on, and the mark and goal.

This kid is special.

Had been invisible up until that point, but never dropped his head, and came up clutch when it really mattered.

Kid has the right attitude, to go along with all his other traits.

No, that's emotional nonsense.

Our remaining kids being shit is why this keeps being selected.

Even if this were true, why would that mean we select a proven non-performer over and over?

Why does his brand of shit get prioritised over everyone else's?

Dodged a bullet today.

One positive to take out of the game though is that we were able to right the ship during a quarter and not during a break. Not an easy thing to do especially when Melbourne were absolutely dominating early in the second quarter.

Take the 4 points and move on.

To quote Terry Wallace "I'll spew up" if:

a) Taylor is dropped after one poor game
b) Murphy takes Rash's spot while injured

Good:
Michalaney on Pickett was really good after the coach took more than a quarter to decide to put him there.
ROB continued his really good form, up against a star and probably shaded him.
Rankine seemed like the only player who was clean today, and make good decisions
Midfielders all played well, however I50s were terrible.

Terrible:
Decision making and foot skills from nearly the whole side.
Rachelle’s knee. Looked really bad and he is so vital.
Inconsistency of umpiring. Every week

Terribly ugly:
Murphy’s game was just so bad. 2 disposals (that he turned over poorly) and throwing himself into marking contests which meant he wasn’t where he should have been when it hit the ground, and he continually spoilt his own player.
