NFL coming to the MCG in September 2026 - clash with AFL finals?

Surely 36 hrs is enough time to turn it back into An AFL ground on Saturday night?

Plenty of time exactly. It’s just one day really. Oh no the Pies might have to play on Saturday lol

So what if four Vic clubs are due to play second week of the finals? That would mean Saturday and Sunday scheduling which means the AFL misses out on the Friday night prime time slot for a final.

The chances of that happening are basically nil. Who are these four sides that are contenders next year? I’ll give you the Pies and Hawthorn who are the other 2? Dogs won’t, Dees won’t, Bombers won’t, Tigers no hope, Carlton (don’t make me laugh), surely Cats die a down year. Even if the Cats do that’s a maximum of 3.

Its still a chance of it happening. Pies and Hawks final plus if its Geelong it would be at the MCG no matter who the oppo is.

That’s 3 not 4. Sat afternoon, Sat night and Sunday. Won’t make a difference.

Do you reckon the NFL would shift their finals scheduling if an overseas sport came along and said we want to use your ground?

The difference is which sport is playing finals when the NFL is playing divisional playoffs give you a tip none. You are making a big dance over one day and it’s worth it you may get overseas visitors staying for the afl finals too.

So the biggest rating slot, the Friday night slot, won't be available just to make way for this NFL circus.

So what it’s one day, and every final will rate regardless when it’s played

It's week 2, so semi final weekend and only 2 matches that round.

They've done 2 matches on the same day before if they need to. Sunday is also available. And the whole problem is solved if a Non Vic team hosts a final that week.

So the apparent "need" to in this circumstance is to make way for the NFL circus. Looking at recent week 2 finals scheduling history, its clear the AFL's preference is for Friday night games. This compromise is forcing it away in the event of a Vic club hosting.

Yeah not a big deal. Roll the dice on there not being two MCG games. And if there are, they could just play the 2nd game on Sunday arvo and make up for the lost primetime exposure with a night grand final!

What's certain is the MCC (wealthy as they are), on behalf of the AFL, will soon be putting their hand out for funding from the State Govt to rebuild the Shane Warne Stand. Much easier to justify when you're attracting events like this.

How is giving up your biggest rating slot on a finals week to a overseas game a "so what" moment?

It will still rate just as much on a Sunday or a night Saturday for a final. It’s not a big deal, NFL USA worldwide phenomenon. Like it or not the sport is followed by a lot of people (way more than our sport) in a number of countries. It will bring in millions to the economy

I thought when the new SWS was first floated the other year the MCC talked about it being self funded with no Government handouts being needed.

Yeah I know your narrative. Its a bigger sport so lay down and make way, blah blah blah.

And if you think Sunday arvos will rate just as well for a final as Friday night, then you have no idea.

Well it sort of is a bigger sport like it or not. The Super Bowl is just huge. People won’t even realise the difference it’s likely only one game is in Melbourne that weekend at most anyway

If the AFL were serious they would move the Grand Final permanently to the second Saturday in October as was suggested by Eddie McGuire. The AFL are seriously considering this, apparently and it is an absolute no brainer. Firstly, by doing this it would mean the NFL game falls on the pre-finals bye. So there is the first win.

But more importantly, long term, it means the AFL Grand Final has no competition from the NRL as the Grand Final would be held a week after the NRL decider. And the two Preliminary Finals the week before would have zero competition since the NRL Grand final is on the Sunday night.

It makes so much sense, you wonder why it hasn’t already happened.

They've already spent $2 million of our taxes on the business case.

It's a question of how much, not if, the government will chip in. So it's probably not the smartest idea to needlessly piss off Jacinta Allan.

because they'd have to wheel out Mike Brady and get him to record a new song with the new grand final month in the lyrics
