Review R20: The Good, the Bad and the Ugly vs. Port: Like taking candy from a baby

I feel like whet he has a poor game in front of goal and in the air he gets angry and really lifts his ground ball game.
I was spewing he missed that first one, would have been absolute gold start.

Got up a bit after 0700, Outback NSW --- clear, blue sky; native birds are celebrating the dawn and the hammering we gave PA.
The Kookaburras especially think it was hilarious.
A glorious day :rainbow: after a gloriously comprehensive thrashing.

My high from last night has faded only a little.
I don't know that we tore them apart, but we sure as Hell tore'em a new one. :grinv1:

Yeah their list is a complete mess.

Kane Cornes can't even polish that turd and has admitted that they're most likely in for a tough few years.

They're traded away so many first rounders over the last few years that it's left a huge talent hole in their list.

It's going to be a long few years for them especially if they continue trading away first round picks.
As much as NWM would be a great pick up for them, it would also mean they having to give up even more first rounders. The position their list is in, they just need as many first rounders as they can get. Adding one gun in NWM will just make the problem worse.

I'm not completely sold on Pedlar but damn if he isn't one of the unluckiest players on our list. Even if you put aside the injuries, so many times he puts himself in the right spots and his teammates miss him. The umps don't like him either. He gets pinged when he's done nothing wrong, and never gets away with those 50/50 calls.
Maybe he gets a bit lippy @ the Umps? They have long memories ...

Good:
Geelong getting excited with the percentage gap being made up with a huge over North and Adelaide is playing Port in a deluge
A midfield masterclass in wet weather football; tackling, getting in the way, spoiling hands out of the back, not allowing the ball to be picked up and pressure.
Hardness at the ball, no Port player got the football without a contest or harassment
Thilthorpes skill in the wet, ANBs tackling, Fogarty took some marks.
Loved the change up in the last quarter with Curtin, Jones and Pedlar in the middle.
Soligo up forward keeping his feet, in fact they all kept their feet instead of diving on the ball.

That Brayden Cook kick to Fogarty in Q4, goodness me that was sublime.

I love Taylors cleanliness, he moves pretty well. If he could get 15-20 a game....

Ruthlessness, a record win. You felt the players joy, they have been grinding for so long they got a bit of a blow off. Which makes me wary about Friday night...

Bad:
MM getting a hamstring injury, probably the best time to do it though. We could use him next week...

Ugly:
Ports list. Georgiades, JHF, Aliir, Butters, Rozee, Sweet/Visentini, Bergman, Jones, Burgoyne, a fit Lukosius would be a "keep". The rest can go, Carr should look at a rebuild. NWM should stay at the Saints.

Their performance felt cheap, they didn't want to be out there except for some of the above.

Still can't really believe how well we played last night. I was confident we would win comfortably, but with the weather I was thinking 5 goals would be a great result. We just looked so clean and used the ball so well. We just kept moving it forward however we could, by kicking it off the ground or tapping it on and Port couldn't deal with the constant waves of pressure.

Thilthorpe was huge early and deserved the medal. Soligo put up a strong case too, he is just so clean with the ball even in the wet.
Backline very good again, week after week they get it done.
So many played well tonight, we are just so even and consistent across the ground each week and don't really have any passengers.

Very exciting times ahead over the next two months

No it isn't. No it won't.

If you had the opportunity (and I get you live somewhere else...you've never said) but I watched the game today and he had no hurt factor, jogged about and the opposition (at that level) played through him when they were rebounding.

I get he is coming back from injury but he is NOT Afl quality.
Crouch is definitely AFL quality, there’s room for his type in the game still. However, just not sure it’s with Adelaide.

I love how everyones so quick to write him off. The dude has been off for half a season with an injury. Needs to find his legs. 36 disposals while probably protecting his work rate is a solid effort. He is AFL quality and its amazing to me how people want him gone... for no other reason than to suit their narrative.

He will be selected. Get used it!
Who are you taking out of our current midfield rotation to make way for Crouch? Dawson, Soligo, Peatling or Berry?

Crouch can't play anywhere other than midfield. He isn't replacing any of the above four so unfortunately for him he has to wait for an injury to happen.

Think he realised the club has loaded up his forward line, if they kick goals we have less scored against us.

When we go slow we give the opposition more time to defend and counter, do you disagree?
No it’s far more that - because when we do turn the ball over in a bad spot we are still set up well enough to defend. Combination of development of our backline players - and their ability to win one on one, but also our midfield and high half forwards putting pressure on
Peatling, ANB, Keays Soligo etc just put on great pressure

A few on here have used the Brad Crouch clip - where Nicks told players in his first year “if you don’t want to have a defensive mindset there’s the door”
The club have recruited really well for that mindset that Nicks has instilled. Structurally Davis may have assisted as well - as all good head coaches have great support around them
But undeniably a Nicks philosophy - that he was ridiculed on here by some for the last few years
This side is about to face its toughest test as I think the Hawks match up particularly well against us - but Nicks has us looking the most balanced a Crows side has been for decades

I don’t think Crouch will get selected for a while. The speed and defensive ability of Berry and Peatling - who are the ones likely for him to replace - is too valuable. Fantastic back up as he gets back to fitness but I don’t see a spot for him
Who would you drop or what would you change to get him in?

Bond for Max
Cumming to the wing, Cook to half forward, Pedlar out
Pedlar won't be dropped, he's a perfect Final's type player ....more likely Jones

I agree re Bond ....we don't currently have a matchup for Watson

HAW are "The Test" .....their side has been significantly improved with Calshier Dear, Mitch Lewis and Day back in the side

Spot on analysis ! .....speed becomes even more important in SEPT, once the grounds firm up, and the game speeds up

Was at the game, avoided getting rained on by about a row or two. Could not believe how well we played in the rain. I swear someone gave our players a reverse lobotomy over summer. We were playing smart wet weather footy. Kicking off the ground, kicking chest high and taking chest marks. We were just so impressive. If we didn't spray the first quarter kicks at goal a 100+ margin would've been child's play.

How did people TT winning the Showdown Medal look on TV? Everyone around me at the game thought Soligo was absolutely stiff to miss out.

Also I know we have so much bigger fish to fry, but **** me, being ahead in the ledger never gets old. We've spent so much of our lives behind in the ledger (a quick look at the wiki suggests we went 17 years without going ahead). So to be 2 ahead is just such a good feeling, meaning that even if we implode next year and lose both we still can't go behind unless they also somehow beat us in a final. And judging on current form, that seems... unlikely.
I was at the game and Thilthorpe was a mile ahead at half time in medal voting - had a heap of clearances, was involved in almost every score - and then went forward in the second half and kicked a few goals. Soligo was good in first half and had the best quarter of his career in the last - but the game was well done by then
Peatling another who would have been right up there

Could see that too. One of Pedlar/Taylor to sub though

Surprises me with their ins that they still only won against the Blues by 24
