There 's a reason why certain umpires within the AFL climb the ranks so quickly and stay there for a long time, and let me tell you, it is not because of their elite umpiring skills.
This applies to almost everything in life. Many times I’ve seen talent ignored. I heard a manager tell an outstanding employee who didn’t get a promotion over a useless git “it’s not about merit”. Like spud players cleaning the bosses car always helps 👌

I was amused by a friendly little umpire interchange with Tex after his third goal. Unless I'm very much mistaken, the ump was commenting with a smile that it was three for Tex. Maybe he'd had a bet with him that he wouldn't get three. ;)
Even umpires can appreciate good play👌 they mostly wanted to be good at footy themselves. if you ever chat to them they are largely try hards that couldn’t play footy and always wanted to, too scrawny mostly. Largely they can run well, that’s it. Hence the no feel for the game.

Obviously corruption is possible especially with all the gambling money around. I'm talking about thinking a professional umpire just hates your team and wants them to lose. It's like thinking an assistant coach who used to play for essendon will go and deliberately tank carlton or something. Pure delusion.

Last night was Cook's chance to show wing is his role.

DC is taking on more midfield time. Not just CBA, but stoppage mid. Starting position Wing, but then chasing stoppages. What Rachele was doing and Murphy tried.

Not just patrolling the wing, ie a kick behind/ in front of play.

It is part of his midfield apprenticeship.

Cook had some genuine wing time. But struggled a bit.
A bit?

Much better than last a Friday nights disaster. AFL need to sort this out.

They're using prime time slots to prop up shit Vic Clubs whose glory days were decades ago.

Carlton and Essendon having as much Thursday/Friday night footy is a joke. Give them the same slots as us and they'd have crowds like the Western Bulldogs.

Re: Peatling of whom I was a big fan until ...
His fumble early in the first really worried me; it smacked of hearing footsteps as 2 Hawks pounced, poached the ball and goaled from it.
That kind of fumbly hesitance under pressure is not what we need going forward.

Anybody at the ground; did he just have an off-night or is there cause for concern?

Think they were tagging him - he was getting scragged all night, should've got a couple of frees, constantly tackled before taking possession.

You could probably call it high HF. But he was patrolling the wing at times last night.

Really unsure on Cook. Has great skills. But at SANFL level he really is just a key forward.

Like Gunston or Fritch.

Can't seem to translate into more of a dynamic role.

Could he be the Tex replacement. With Fog more traditional CHF and Cook closer to goal?
Great skills are useless if you can’t get the ball

Also just a reminder that the Collingwood game should have been irrelevant to a top 2 finish. We can thank the elite AFL umpiring fraternity for the role they played in the Gold Coast earlier this year.
We lost the Hawks game where we had total control for much of it. Should have won that one but threw it away.

Season would look and feel very different if we won either of those. Insane to think at this point of the year there have only been 3 games where we were off it.

And I guess the Collingwood one is arguable being 10 points but it never really felt like we were a good chance of winning that.

And technically the Geelong one we looked good too until the short break from the GC toasted us.

Another 1 year contract for Walker. You would be crazy not to.
Had a chat a few weeks with a guy post an Adelaide Footy League game who has a lot to do with some current Crows players. We were chatting about two sided players over the years and His word was that the club has put a 1 year deal in front of Tex.
No other details.

Bless you for standing up for them, but believing that certain umpires can’t possibly be consciously or subconsciously biased is a very naive point of view. Pannel did it shamelessly but others are a bit more subtle

Reading the thread on the Port board as the game unfolded is so satisfying - watching them go from unhinged delight to pure devastation in the space of one quarter. Delicious.
Also how they change their opinion from "finally crows finding out where they sit when playing a contender" to "at least we know that the premiership race is wide open as neither of these teams are contenders" chefs kiss

I think we've looked pretty good in every game this year except Freo, albeit in the first 7 weeks we were definitely worse than the last 13 games and we've had some down quarters here and there.

Against Geelong we had that five goal lead in the second quarter. And against Collingwood we led midway through the third term, missed a couple of pretty easy scoring chances (Rankine failed to score from two set shots) before Collingwood kicked the next four and basically ended the game. I wouldn't say we were the better team on the day but it was certainly pretty close.
