Review R23: The Good, the Bad and the Ugly vs. Collingwood

Ugly: The guy infront of me got up and left with 3:11 to go on the clock in clutch time in one of the critical games of the season.

He always leaves 2 mins early and has missed Thilly's late goal a few games ago.

Traffic must really annoy him to miss being part of that crowd roar.
Had 2 neutrals leave right next to me at the beginning of the fourth quarter. One appeared to be silently supporting Collingwood. Why even bother turning up.

I think it should be unbiased, or at least come across that way. I don't expect commentators to not have biases. I just expect them to not let it affect their work.

If we're going to go down this road of accepting state bias being part of the fabric of commentary, we deserve a better ambassador than Mark Ricciuto.

I don’t think it can be, unless we recruit from outside the sport. Roo is boundary rider and infrequent special comments, it’s a lot easier to be neutral in a role when you’re talking about a player getting their ankle re-strapped. I do remember Peter Russo in 97 of 98 not being able to hide his disdain for us, but it genuinely made winning that much better.

I can never understand why people leave early, especially in a close game. You paid all that money to get into the game, invested your entire night watching it and then leave early just to avoid the traffic and get home 30 minutes earlier.
People leave their seat they dont leave the game

We sit in the Riverbank but park in the disabled on Montefiore Hill

We leave and watch the game as we go. Stop at the top of the hill for the final siren then leave

IMO opinion Roo is pretty even-handed these days.

Dawson will, Thilthorpe and Rankine won't. They'll go for Cameron and Darcy as the talls ahead of Thilthorpe. I don't think Worell will make it either, they'll go the "You need more than 1 good season" excuse to pick someone who's been in before ahead of him.

There's a games minimum these days, isn't there? It's why Rankine missed last year. Houston's cheap shot left him 1 game short. Darcy missed a good 6-8 weeks. It'll be Jezza and Gunston, and I reckon Filthy makes the bench. He'll definitely be squad of 40 though.

If Worrell doesn't make it we need a Brisbane-esque article on the Crows site.

Betting odds suggest Dawson, Thilthorpe, Worrell and Rankine

Can be a real bastard getting out when there's 50k. I get annoyed when people leave early cos they're fed up, but I don't judge when people leave early for logistics

So which Crows will get picked in the All Australian Team ?

Dawson
Thilthorpe
Rankine

Not sure Rankine makes it. Definitely not as a mid and there’s a couple mid/fwds that are close to him, definitely in the squad I’d have thought. Worrell should at least make the squad. TT makes the squad but dicey for the team. Jezza FF a lock, then there’s a few competing for 2nd KPF. He’s equal 9th/10th on goals per game, depends how they structure the side re 2nd ruck I reckon.

Darcy misted a lot of games due to the knee injury ....Cameron will be one FWD ....Thilthorpe on the bench

I tell you what, I haven't been to a game like that in years. That was bigger than the 2017 prelim, crowd noise wise. The roar when the siren went was deafening.

Great:
Woz and Keane.
The crowd and atmosphere
The players reactions when the siren went.

Good:
The 2nd quarter.
Most of the 3rd before their junk time goal. We kept them goalless for nearly a whole half.
Soligo was very good
Cumming, ANB, Peatling all stood up in the big moments.
Our 2020 season. It got us Thilthorpe.

Bad/Ugly:
Thilthorpe shouldn't have kicked the ball away, but my god it's like it cost them a goal???? It was on our forward side of centre wing with 54 seconds left. They get the free, we choke the backline. They're not guaranteed to score.
The non-HTB against Collingwood in that last contest. He dropped it, that's ball. But no, there's no national inquiry into that one.

The Good:
The defence. Good is an understatement. Keane was best on IMO.

Milera is more than justifying the years it has taken to get to now. He is as dynamic in the backline for us as Rankine is forward of centre. An absolute jet. Did someone say there's a Wanganeen-Milera? Yes please.

Watching Hinge and Maynard go about their work at either ends of the ground is impressive, similar players. Imagine those two lining up on the half back flank for our Origin side.

Seeing Thilthorpe take a pack mark and skilfully finish off around the corner, only for Daicos to close the gap back a couple of minutes later was sensational. Two great young players who will both be all-timers, making their mark in huge moments on a huge stage. It's a privilege to be there to see it.

The crowd. Adelaide Oval was rocking. Can't wait for Finals.

The Bad:
The stats re clearances and I50's. Thankfully the scoreboard dgaf what the stats sheet says. Clearly though, we've still got work to do.

The Ugly:
The Collingwood Cheer Squad? Nah, there was even beauty in that - what a great night!

As noted by @cmndstab Murphy looked to be playing him 2-3m off . Was it effective? Maybe . Who knows who else took up the slack when he wasnt near
I watched on TV which makes it hard to see where players are and what they do out of the picture ...
... which is where Murphy must have been most of the time, because I did not notice him at all except for the mark/play-on/htb and two other times he showed angry frustration after he was behind the action.
Many posters have said that Murphy does a lot of things that Nicks sees, but that we do not notice.
For me that was true yesterday.
2K 4 HB 1M 1T, in a full game, compared to Schoenberg 1K 4HB 1M 2T in a quarter (and Schoenberg is no ball-magnet).
We beat Collingwood in spite of Murphy's presence, not because of it.
I would expect a close checking defender to be - you know - close.
Then when we have the ball to be loose
That describes Bond 3K 4HB 1M 5T and I definitely noticed the 5 tackles; 3rd best defender to Worrell and Keane imo.
Isn't Murphy paid to kick goals and exert Defensive pressure in our F50?

Collingwood board will have you believe the commentary was biased against them.

It's just how we perceive it.

However we can all agree that the commentary was woeful.
Yes, the broadcasters think we want that analysis ....fine at Qtr, half time, and after the game

But it annoys me in-game ....particularly as game swings occur, and everything they've said about a team gets flipped

I would walk through the gates of hell to avoid our captain being mildly disappointed in me
He wouldn't be disappointed.
