Until now we've had the good timing to always have one of Butts and N Murray out injured. We've probably been telling both of them that they're first choice, with no selection headache to expose our lie.

How long will they both buy it?

I highly doubt it, seeing we preferred Murray when both were fit earlier this year. Near certainty that was communicated in some form, and if it wasn't clear then, it's clear now.

if Butts doesn't play finals, I think other clubs will come knocking and he will explore his options. Would be a big loss for our KPD depth.

Yup, but really, we're probably at the point where it's better to trade Butts then hold on, seeing he'd have some value from his run earlier in the year. After all, there are teams that need a KPD and Butts could be a solid option.

And then what happens next year when Murray misses time like he often does?

Then you go to Borlase/whoever as our KPD depth (especially as Butts had a rough run with injuries as well) as a body and back your system to do the job on someone. Which really isn't too different to using Butts, or Murray, seeing most of the defensive side of a team is system based.

There doesn't seem to be much point having someone that has limited scope to make your best 22 when everyone is fit, and should have some value, in your SANFL side. For either us, or Butts.

Did we?

Butts was returning from injury in the preseason. Even Borlase played ahead of him when Murray was out early in the season, while Butts regained match fitness.

Imho, selection comes down to two spots;

Michalanney. Keane. Worrell

Laird Murray. Milera

Cumming. Dawson. Curtin

O’Brien. Soligo. Peatling

ANB. Walker. Taylor

Keays. Thilthorpe. Fogarty

Hinge, Berry, Smith, XXXX, XXXXX

I think everyone agrees that we won’t have a debutant (Turray, Welsh, Gallagher, McAndrew, Edwards, Ryan).
With Rankine, Crouch and Rachele unavailable, that leaves 13 to choose between.

No need for more talls so Burgess, Borlase and Butts miss out. Butts isn’t that far off selection but I think Murray has more upside.

We need one more midfielder.
Dowling, Jones, Sholl, Nankervis, Draper and Schoenberg. None of these are screaming pick me.

We also need one more small/medium forward.
Pedlar, Cook, Murphy, Nankervis, Bond (to run with Josh Daicos). Not a lot to get excited about in this bunch.

My gut feel………

Out - Draper, Dowling
In - Michalanney, Pedlar

Bond is either used as a cooler or as a sub.

What about Murphy???? Well I’m telling you there’s a chance.

Butts did play in preseason matches, he was match fit come those early rounds, and we chose Borlase (and also none of them, seeing there was at least one game where we decided Keane would have the primary shutdown job).

In our mind, Jordon wasn't seen as best 22 come the start of this year.

He wasn't match fit at all, had a very late start to preseason due to foot surgery and Borlase was jettisoned as soon as Butts was ready to go.

It's been just by chance that the pair of Murray / Butts have rarely been fit and firing at the same time. Always one or both injured, or one or both returning from injury.

Maybe Butts sees the writing on the wall now

I think Pedlar needs to come in, he draws free kicks and tackles up forward. 8 touches and a goal would be the kind of game we want (with a few tackles).

Dowling did well against North and fits our structure on the wing if Curtin moves into the middle.

I'd really like to have Laird and/or Keays rotate through the middle, Laird is in really good form around contest especially.

Keays is just built for finals contests.

It comes down to Smith or Bond in my mind. Bond on Elliot scares me... Smith doing anything under pressure scares me...

Butts is pretty much line ball with Nick Murray, not much in it, both are levels above Borlase. That's not even debatable, surely the eye test should tell you that.

Max has to play on Elliott. Simple.

Murphy no chance.

Scratch match at training. Rachele and Ryan are doing running, no sign of Edwards.

A team - Keays, Berry, Curtin, Thilthorpe, N Murray, Dawson, Walker, Soligo, Michalanney, Hinge, Worrell, Peatling, Neal-Bullen, Laird, Milera, Fogarty, Bond, O’Brien, Cumming, Keane

B team - Jones, Murphy, Pedlar, Welsh, Cook, Taylor, Burgess, Schoenberg, Nankervis, Dowling, Smith, Draper, Borlase, Gallagher, Drury, Sholl, T Murray, Butts, McAndrew, Strachan

Max played forward and looked very sharp.

20 in that A team so three to come in. Smith looked sharp and deserves a spot. If max plays forward that keeps Bond in, so hopefully Taylor gets a gig ahead of Murphy as Max would get the Josh Daicos job. You would think it’s out of Dowling or Pedlar for the last spot.

A bigman training report, there's nothing better!

It was pissing down, luckily could just watch in the car.

Skills were actually pretty good considering. Filthy in particular, was just gloving the wet ball, unfortunately kicked at least four behinds.

Smith looks really energised atm.

I think 14 and 2 and not getting injured keeps Dowling in

I think he is the right choice as sub, comes in behind the ball and we have enough coverage up the ground if it is a forward of center player that is subbed. He can still break lines and kick long, but is able to also hit a target at distance if he lowers his eyes.
