2025 List Management Discussion - Part 3

Now that our season is over, and news is starting to break - it's time for a fresh thread.

This thread is to discuss all things list management - trades, draft, free agency, delistings and more.
As we are now officially in our off-season, we'll be wanting to keep this thread more strictly on-topic than the previous iterations.
Be respectful. You are allowed to disagree with someone - but play the ball, not the man. Repeat offenders will have their posting rights revoked.

Thanks to Lore once again for this incredibly useful spreadsheet.

I dont know, im not crowing about JSOS.

If JSOS and Aleer are coming were paying $1.3-$1.4m to cover Battle and get Tauru, all this really does to me is make it more important Tauru properly becomes a star.

I also hate the narrative elements here (JSOS running back to Daddy, SOS' obsession with the blues).

It is what it is and i hope it makes us better on field but im not quite as chuffed as many on here seem.
Forget the perception
Does it improve us ?
Hard to argue short term it doesn’t
The ONLY risk is the injury factor that could make this a bust

You don’t win flags being conservative

You also don’t win flags going to the draft in a very poor draft, a draft that’s heavily impacted by academy and compensation picks, one of the last ones that is not heavily impacted by Tassie also.

TDK checked out, he is a much much better player than he showed the 2nd half of this year, I’ve got no doubt he will be in the AA discussion with us now he’s got a fresh start and his long term security.

Jsos was playing every bit as good as battle was for us and the hawks this year prior to injury.

Liam Ryan is much better than Dan Butler.

NAS I can’t believe anyone is even concerned about the money we paid him, he’s a top 5 player in the comp who gives a flying **** what we pay him.

We did this a few years ago with Hill, Jones, Howard etc the difference being this time around the team is younger, full of draft picks we made the last 4 years, the team is better and the recruits we are bringing in are better.

Be happy!! Be pumped, think good things because it may be closer than you realise.
Top 4 clubs driving along the highway right now...

Think he stays behind the ball, a fully fit forward set up still features

King
Sharman
Owens
Marshall
Keeler?
I think Marshall leaves and Tauru quickly passes Keeler.

My hope would be:

Sharman Tauru Ryan
Higgins King Owens

Rotating through midfield/interchange:

Pou, Hall, Henry, Collard*, Butler*

*Not through midfield

All of a sudden there’s a real good competition for spots.

We will see in 3 or 4 years. It's either extraordinarily ballsy and a calculated gamble or irresponsible gambling with our future after a very disciplined early stage of the build.

Having Nas to work off gives us a champion to build around. That is the cornerstone of the side and he inherited that. Our list is in pretty good shape and only results show how good.
I doubt most, if not all of this would have happened had NAS not signed.
So we’re seizing the moment, but I don’t think we’re straying all that much from the path they promised.
Approx 4 good years of drafting and then hit free agency big time.
Appears to me we are on schedule.

I saw it was as a potential DFA. If he's free it's pretty low risk.
It isnt free for two reasons, Firstly we have to pay his salary and secondly he takes a list spot we can otherwise keep for our current players. I still don’t see how we find spots for all these new players without losing a player that doesnt deserve to be chopped.

I'm not either. Wouldn't mind to see them winning it of those left in the finals. Am hoping for Adelaide though. Have a soft spot for 'em. Certainly not the Cats, Dawks or franchise mobs.
I’m guessing you weren’t at the ‘97 Grand Final? After the siren their fans were feral pricks more keen on taunting us than celebrating their win screw them

Signing JSOS should also make it easier to get a good deal with GWS as they now know that we will not be as desperate to land Aleer as it may have seemed a few weeks ago.

Add Carrol to that list.
At this stage we have 0 spots if you say TDK is replacing Cordy, JSOS replacing Webster, Boyd & McLennan were rookies so have only opened up rookie spots.

Crouch was also on this year's rookie list, for contractual reasons and with him being injured/retired.

So that frees up 3 rookie slots. Voss could a FS prelisted rookie.

Brad Crouch has been added to St Kilda’s rookie list in the club’s final selection of this year’s draft process.

This takes the Saints’ playing list to capacity, with Crouch joining Anthony Caminiti, Max Hall and Angus McLennan in the main rookie group, which is complemented by Category B Irishmen Liam O’Connell and
the recently added Eamonn Armstrong.

I can’t see us signing any of the guys OOC except Windy.

Cordy - TDK
Webster - JSOS
Byrnes - Ryan
Arie - Aleer
Carrol - Flanders
Jones - Fincher
Heath - FRP

To be honest, may need to lose one or two more!!

Marshal, Steele may or may not be pick trades, and if so may free up a spot/s. Windy probably staying....

Further to previous posts asking about spots left on list. I think it might be useful to post a table I found in the depths of the afl rules pdf.

Screenshot_20250903_232535_Drive.jpg

So you can have 44 spots which is made up of 36-38 on the main list and the other 6-8 made up of cat A and cat B rookies.

According to Draft Guru we went into our season with 38 primary, 4 Cat A rookies and 2 Cat B rookies, which is the 3rd row in that table.

Official changes (out) so far are Webster/Cordy off primary list and Gus/Boyd off the Cat A rookie list. List size therefore is 36 (Primary), 2 (Cat A) & 2 (Cat B).

We're committed to TDK and JSOS to the Primary list, so we're now at 38, 2 & 2. Hopefully you're keeping up!

We've currently got the following players out of contract:

  • Jones
  • Byrnes
  • Heath
  • Carroll
  • Windhager
  • Arie

So there is the facts.

stop reading now if you don't want it confused with my ramblings/speculation...

I fully anticipate Windhager to sign on and Heath to be traded to Melbourne. Another list change that will be forced will be Caminiti, who after 3 rookie listed years he will need to go onto our Primary list. Hall the last remaining player on the rookie list, but doesn't have to be upgraded yet.

So that leaves us with 34 primary, 1 cat A rookie and 4 unsigned players - Jones, Byrnes, Carroll and Arie.

Keep in mind Hammer is one of the 3 taken in the National Draft, and I'd assume Fincher is another, leaving possibly only 1 live selection.

So if we take 3 in the draft (incl Hammer) we are now sitting with 36 on our primary list, 1 cat A, 2 cat B.

What I'm getting at is if we delist those 4, we have space for 2 traded in. Aleer and Ryan perhaps - but I think we will definitely get one of Flanders, Merrett or CMac.

We will have 3 rookie list spots available, which could be used to re-rookie contracted (or delisted) players, as risky as that is. Someone like Said looks unlikely to be poached, he might drop down to be rerookied to open that last spot.

So what I'd do...

  • upgrade Hammer
  • sign Windy
  • trade out Heath
  • delist Jones, Byrnes, Carroll, Arie, Said
  • trade in Aleer, Ryan and one of Merrett/CMac/Flanders
  • draft Fincher, Hammer and a 3rd draftee
  • rookie list Said, Arie, Carroll/Byrnes - or possibly leave spots open for a train on.

This, in my head at least, is the most logical outcome if we are to assume we don't trade any contracted players. This is the year to utilise the rookie list wisely.

Steele and Marshall in particular would be the most likely to be traded based on their currency, I very much doubt the above would change much other than we'd keep someone like Said on the primary list.

Hope that all made sense, I'm tired af so apologies for letting you into the inners workings of my brain. Happy to edit any errors, but I'm pretty sure I've got at least the facts sorted.

Only allowed 4 cat A rooks based on our set up. We were able to ditch Crouch for Boyd on that list. So Crouch doesn't exist on any active Rookie lists and Boyd was delisted. Meaning its just Hammer and Hall in cat A but Hammer will have to be upgraded.

Said was only drafted last year. So he will, as new draftee, stay on the primary list till end of 2026 as new draftees have a 2 year minim contract.
Can delist anyone under contract with the promise of rerookie-ing them. Harsh for a draftee but can interchange Said with anyone you think won't be picked up elsewhere.

He can still be delisted, the contract means we just have to pay him (and include that in cap) regardless of whether he’s on a list or not. We grab him in the rookie draft and it’s all kosher.

Ins. Aleer, Fincher-draft, JSOS, Ryan, TDK, Voss-rookie, Wanganeen-rookie, 2 x others-primary list.

Outs. Boyd, Byrnes, Carroll, Cordy, Heath, Jones, McLennan, Schoey, Webster

Could put Said on the rookie list.

Cat A: Hall, Said, Voss, Wanganeen

Cat.B: Armstrong, O'Connell
