If people are saying you “can’t just shove people more than 5m off the ball” then I look forward to the universal acceptance from oppo fans of Nick Daicos getting 45 free kicks next time he’s tagged.

When the commentators say "you can't pay that in a final!"

Are the rules different in a final?

They're soft frees in any round not just a final.
agreed. it should be a large flopping fine for Rayner and an inquest into the umpires. Check for any betting accounts with family members, check the lot. Laughably bad.

There really should be ab option for the umpires to issue a warning. Soft but unnecessary contact - warning, repeat = free
There is, literally that. It's called communication to control the game and prevent escalation. See a bloke swing an arm around and miss, have a word to him afterwards to watch out. Just puts players on notice without impacting the game.

What could have been a 33-point lead in a final, cut to just 15 in two successive, soft umpiring decisions will be quite scandalous if they are the decisive factor in who wins tonight. I think the AFL would have to get tougher on players who stage for free kicks. I'm going for the Lions, by the way.

haha. Dezi is rayners new nickname. Dezi had how many touches minus those 2 howlers. 1 touch. 2nd worst player on the ground behind Lester.
Fritsch has zero goals in the 2021 GF when you subtract their six goals, danster168.

You like those decisions?

I don’t like either one.

I can understand how the first gets paid though, if the umpire is monitoring the whole 50, and sees O’Connor hit Rayner from behind (which he does do), and Rayner goes down, it’d be hard to tell whether he dived as he did or was actually hit hard.

The second one is a shocker, the umpire was right there and absolutely should have seen that there was nothing in that.

At the same time, what is to be gained by Guthrie doing that? given what he had just seen it was a completely unnecessary risk to take for little gain.

The melting is so bad many folks I used to know as solid men are now puddles of people. I’m sitting in it, it’s wet and weird.

He’s right. It’s a push-in-the-back, and miles off the ball.

It’s too soft for “rough conduct”, but not for a push-in-the-back. Especially that far off the ball.

If you don’t pay that, you could just knock your opponents over off the ball all game long.

It really ISN'T!

This happens a hundred times a game... It never gets paid.. until tonight.

So what would you do if he punched him in the head?
Weird hypothetical but let's go with it.

1. Pay the reverse free kick. I don't konw the specifics about when a free kick should be paid at the place of the incident rather than just where the ball is.
2. Report the player that punched him.
3. Perhaps pay 50m penalty rather than a 150m penalty.
