My personal opinion is that playing Rash would be a very silly, desperate move. He would have had two weeks of full training under his belt. Zero match fitness and next to zero contact. You can’t throw someone, even with his talent, into a hot final against Hawks and expect him to perform under those circumstances. My guess is he won’t be picked at all.

We did it with MM last week, and even played him in the middle.

Got no choice now. No SANFL to play him in. So if hes fit. Hes in. Too good to leave out.

The Hawks are the best in the business at playing footy that stacks up in finals. They cover the immediate defensive side of the contest with waves of walls. They maintain sparse forward outlets at regular intervals. They press forward and get creative when given a chance. They'll leave an opposition defensive outlet open, knowing all too well that the dumb teams will use this outlet. Sweat on it and intercept and then gift themselves an easy path to goal.

Will we be stupid enough to fall into this trap again and again?

Our forwards need to be in a constant rotation of providing an in front option for anyone with the pill. "Mayhem".
Lower the eyes and kick to the lead up forward option and ride our wave press to goal or handball beyond the defensive first line wave press so they have to turn and face our goal.

Put your head over it and go. If you're not going you're part of the defensive wall, shut them down and get it back.

Weddle is their key asset. Swing Worrell onto him and tell him to get dangerous. Set them free!
Do this well and you might be a snowflakes chance in hell of making the big dance!

Get hungry for a taste of it.
It can be important to remember they also go missing for huge chunks of a game as soon as they start celebrating goals like this:

We are an extremely strong defensive unit and still in the game despite being dominated. Up until Thilthorpe thought Keays was a better option than running into an open goal we were almost on them after a good end to the 3rd quarter.

Collingwood do those small details better than us, the experience, the nuance of reading the game and just knowing their game.

Even if things go horribly wrong it would be unlikely we get 7 goals down like GWS and it only takes 6-7 good minutes to change the game.

Bond stays in with Hawks many small forwards and likely Max back there also.

Smith and Taylor out
Rash in. Hinge to sub.
Leaves Max, Bond, Milera and Laird to take their smalls

Need MUCH improved efforts from Senior guys:

Midfield was shocking. The main area to lift but has it actually got the quality to do so….
Fog was useless
Ditto Cumming.
Need much more rebound off half back
Small forwards need to hit scoreboard but collectively lack elite pace and queries over Rash (similar to Max first up last game)

Looking closely at both teams it’s hard not to be genuinely concerned:

  • both teams current midfields iterations are the worst of the top 8. Probably balance out each other but don’t like ROBs chances
  • their KPD are as good as ours inc additional flexibility with swingmen Weddle and Sicily
  • they have better small forwards
  • they have clearly much better attacking skilful hbf’s giving huge drive
  • Mitchell is a very astute coach who I would back on - at least - breaking even with Nicks,

I actually think their team is better quality overall. Our best chances are (1) home final, (2) hopefully extra motivation after embarrassing humbling effort vs Pies and (3) 2 days extra rest may be a slight advantage

Without Rankine and Rash serious question marks on impact can we really rely on other small forwards to get it done. I have been a big Peds fan and glad he stood up last week but he won’t kick 3 very often. Can TT really get hold of Barass (Battle) and kick a bag? Unlikely. Will Fog and Tex kick 2 or 3 each? We need it

Probably 50/50 game but “I have a bad feeling about this”. First Minor Premier this century to go out in straight sets looks more likely than not. Finals very even so they aren’t shocking or embarrassing losses per se but still very disappointing if we fail to win this weekend. And will cause a small gorilla to be hanging on to us in our next finals series.

Would love to be very wrong

I'd go in like this.

Bond Butts Michelanney
Worrell Keane Milera
Murray Dawson Curtin
Thilthorpe Neale-Bullen Fogarty
Rachele Walker Pedlar

ROB Berry Soligo

Cumming, Hinge/Cook, Keays/Taylor, Laird.

Cook/Hinge/Taylor/Keays Sub.
And one makes way.

Worrell, Murray & Cumming rotation Wing/HB when Murray is on the wing bring out the steam roller.
Murray to straight line steam roll every contest. Nothing deliberately stupid just NFG for those willing to get in his way.

2hrs of grunt and grind and execution when the window is open.

fair enough give them no chances, just dominate!

I would bring in Rash if fit and ready and Cook.

Both give us something different up forward.

Smith and Taylor out and those 2 in with Hinge as sub. Hinge can play back, wing, midfield if needed

Hinge or Cook on the wing?

If we’re going to win the flag we’ll need Rach to contribute. We simply need to wear the rust he may play with over the next couple of games. It wouldn’t be desperate, it’d be sacrificing a bit short term to benefit the overall flag push.

One thing i wouldn't mind seeing every once in a while, is a chaos ball along the ground, All our talls are particularly good below the knees, at least its not going to be an easy intercept, anything but lacing out he Moores, Stewarts, Sicilies etc

But then do you pick him now and play him for a half so he is right to go for the prelim....? Or just leave him out for the year (which they won't do).
