I mean, easiest solution would be to divvy up nsw and qld with all clubs give a catchment area to foster the best talrnt in that region.

Solves nsw/qld development, whilst enabling and rewarding clubs for fostering talent in the area.

It’d have to be accompanied by minimum spend/investment and other kpis with penalties for non-compliance to avoid it becoming NGA2.0 where it’s just bare minimum spend for most clubs. I also wonder how other clubs would get the proper infrastructure in place unless they align with a local club.

I suspect most clubs won’t want to fund and run something which at the end of the day will still advantage the northern clubs with the pull home / not wanting to be drafted interstate.

Sure, if we get a slice of Victoria in return. Most Lions fans would probably be happy with Warrnambool and surrounds.

Didn't affect Cooper Hodge for example. Seems to prefer Lions over Hawks and is a Lions supporter apparently.

Ashcrofts for example would've been drafted by Gold Coast if Marcus didnt have a fallout and left the club. I bet you if Lions lost those 2 to suns there wouldn't be a peep in Victoria. It would've been considered "good for the game" just like when we lost Marc Murphy or Blakey.

Cooper Hodge shouldn't have been eligible for the academy.

He should be a father son only.

Use it or lose it. If a club doesn't want to develop it then it loses it and it reverts to the former academy club.

SImply get rid of all other nga zones and only allow northern one.

Once gets to critical mass, pathway reverts to AFL for funding and open draft.

In an ideal world the academy would never have been tied to a club and would be entirely funded and run by the AFL. But it makes no sense to do that given how cost prohibitive it is and the existing clubs already have all the infrastructure etc. I suspect it also strengthens it to have the pathway aligned to an AFL club.

Having club run academies is the best of the options reasonably available imo.

I think in another 5-15 years the model could maybe change to the AFL bankrolling the entire thing at which time there should be next to no matching power. We would still run them but wouldn’t have any resource implications past personnel and use of infrastructure. And even that should be financially accounted for as though you’re a third party renting the facilities etc.

The goal is to do whatever is needed to get quantity of afl players coming out of Qld and NSW.

What St Kilda and Freo offer is complaints with no solutions to this.

I imagine we’ve got solutions but they’ll probably make your head explode.

I think the fact that no VFL club has come out chomping at the bit to get a zone up north says something.

Or once it gets to critical mass, you exit the draft and only draft from the academy?

This Swans have been funding the academy so therefore should benefit is a bit rough when WA teams have been financing WA the entire time, don’t see those clubs getting first crack using the funding argument.

Appropriate funding for WA is an equally meritorious discussion point. As it is for SA.

But the distinction here is, what other sports are you competing with in WA? Is mining a sport in WA?

Do you think there is a point in time where the academies shouldn't be club run so those players can be put into the open pool?
I have more of an issue with fatherson then academy because it's reasonable to say this kid never would have played afl if it wasn't for this academy etc.

A phased approach would make sense in my view. For example, Gold Coast has seen a definite increase in grass roots growth of AFL with the game being played in schools and second tier, potentially good infra to back it up hopefully etc. You can see that in the amount of kids picking up the sport in schools and so on.

In may be 5 years time if the current growth has sustained, then releasing portions of GC zones out of academy boundary would make sense. It'll be similar to GWS losing riverina area as it was considered an area where AFL has good foundation already so doesn't need an academy to "grow the game".

If begging for an even comp is part of our DNA then I’ll take it.

I hope you show the same energy around "evenness" and "equality" in other domains like travel, grand final, kids choosing to stay in victoria during drafting etc. Let's not limit to a singular argument of academy and everything else is picture perfect in AFL.

No he wouldn't.

He's the son of an all time great.

He could play country football u/16s and he'd still be on everyone's radars.

Nick Blakey still would have made the AFL without being attached to an academy.

Being on a radar because of your dad and developing into an afl quality prospect are two different things

The victimhood is strong, bro.

Saw this posted in another forum, and thought it was surprisingly accurate.

WA only has one potential A grade (good chance of making all Australian squad at least) draft in the last 5 years, that being Dan Curtin. Once again WA does not have a top 10 player in the draft.

He is also the only player from WA in the AFLPA U22 team.

Does it involve St Kilda bringing out its begging bowl?
What begging bowl would that be, genius?

You might want to check your history for a few facts instead of acting like a condescending dick.

Please tell me the last time our club threw out the begging bowl for draft picks? I'll wait.

Around 2000 we received priority picks when it was part of AFL policy, before being scrapped. Goddard fell into our lap thanks to Carlton cheating. We traded out players like Hall and Everitt to get draft capital.

We get funds through equalisation because of the AFL prioritising blockbusters and our crap deal at Docklands, where we had to get 30k attendance to break even. Other than that, we never begged for draft concessions like GCS, North and now the WCE.

Just be honest and say that you want the status quo to remain because it suits your team. I'd respect that more than yur pathetic snipes.

No one mentioned priority picks.

I’ve made my position clear in this thread. If St Kilda want to propose a change that will achieve the purpose of academies be my guest. But all I get when I pose this question is deflections from Saints fans.
