News AFL overhauls Academy and FS bid matching, discussing draft lockout

I think a rule of 1st round picks are only matched by 1st round picks works ( perhaps top 5 picks can include R2 as well to top up your 3r1's used on bidding).
So if you win the flag and get a bid on your academy or F/S at pick 6, you pay 18, future R1, Future R1.
If you get a bid at 1, you pay (18, 36, future R1, Future R1).

They should let this season be the existing rules, but surely close the trading for extra junk picks on the night. Also for 2026, limit the picks to match to be 3.
Junk pick trade won't happen as the DVI has reduced the round 3 value.

They can keep the rule as-is but trades won't be a factor under the new rules.

I believe the turning point was Andrew Pridham’s letter to the AFL, which highlighted the potential withdrawal of private funding from the academies. This likely prompted the AFL to recognise a financial risk they hadn’t anticipated or budgeted for, leading them to reconsider their stance.
This sounds a bit like a rich kid having a birthday party, then throwing a tantrum when ( assuming they where playing cricket as an example) the other kids want a bat rather than just watch the birthday kid bat.

I say again, where is the leadership from the AFL on this issue?

Why aren't they out defending the system that they just changed, and hasn't even been tested yet.

Instead they just let all the complaints, speculation, rumour, and other bs, bubble along.

Half of the prominent people who comment in the media don't even understand the bidding system, let alone that they have just made significant changes to it or the impact of those changes.

The AFL is so F******G hopeless.

Most of the prominent voices on this issue don’t care how it works or any changes that are being proposed, they really are agitating for it all to be scrapped and watering it down further and further gets us closer to that goal. They’ll continue to complain about the new system regardless of whether it works or not.

The current AFL have no capital to leader and are rudderless now. But you certainly don’t command respect or build authority by being absent.

Name them.

Rightly so, I mean the AFL is hardly gunna be loaded with cash with the Tassie thing coming in and who knows how much more expensive that will be. They are already propping up a few clubs.

There was always going to be somewhat of a compromise between the two extremes

So they completely change the rules for this year, and then change them again before they've seen them play out once.

What a clown show.

AFL decides against draft bidding lockout, but tightening 2026 rules New
Yes they do

They’re going to have to have a very poor year to match if he goes at 1. Or basically give up a few years worth of draft capital.

Interesting. Quite a big advantage for clubs outside Vic if they can get prospects to indicate they don’t want to leave the state so avoid bids.

Yeah they're fairly ****ed and have to give up something fairly big now to do so

Sounds like the top of the ladder teams wont be locked out of the top of the draft but finally have to pay something resembling a proper price. Greg Swan has really gone in guns blazing

It seems fair on the surface least they didn’t bow down to dumb St Kilda wanting to lock everyone out. You can still get the elite talents but there is a price.

I was personally ok with a full first round lock anyway but my main concern was the price paid still being ridiculous AND top of the ladder teams getting way too access to the top of the draft. Sounds like they've addressed both which is fantastic
