Review Semi final vs Hawthorn - Ugly, Historically Embarrassing and Pathetic

I watch most Adelaide home games. I think there's a lot of harshness towards the coaching.

4/5ths of your midfield for finals was ROB, Peatling, Berry and Soligo with Rory Laird being called on out of necessity. Even if Dawson was Dusty Martin, no one is coaching a team with that midfield to September success.

A focus on defending the ground was the right game plan for Adelaide. A low transition game which makes aerial contest and brilliance in congestion more significant was the way to go. You've got a lot of hard working, hard running B graders and your strengths are aerial contests and the brilliance of Rankine and the kicking and overall game of Dawson. I don't think you could have gotten it down with Rankine, but without him you were cooked.

You need a better midfield to go from good team to September success. Either recruiting, significant development from Soligo/Berry/Peatling or Draper/Curtin coming on as top midfielders really quickly.
Yeah we are one midfield short, and by taking out Rankine who can roll through there and create problems, it was a double whammy.

We have some good mids. Dawson is elite, Soligo and Peatling are good, but it goes downhill quick from there.
Draper was mismanaged this year, and is exactly the type of player we need. Explosive break away speed from the contest, and able to also hit the scoreboard.

There’s no hate for Christ sake. It’s an observation of his obvious — and concerning — flaws in his game. He panics so much. I don’t hate him as a player though. But it’s not out of this world to suggest he’s not good to be the player we’d hoped for. And of course it’s early days and things can change. I hope they do.
Theres plenty of people rubbishing him.
All people have to do is go back and watch Dangers first few games with the club.
In his first season he played 2 games and averaged 6 possessions in each of those games.
He constantly got caught holding the ball and panicked when he got it.
He had similar traits to Draper, breakaway speed, questionable disposal by foot when at full pace, and was used to being able to burn off players at the lower levels when he got the ball.
It takes a while for these guys to get the pace of the game, and learn to know when to use their pace, and when to do something different.
To see people turning on him, saying we should have picked a different players is disgraceful.
He is a home grown Crows supporter, who absolutely has the qualities we desperately need in our midfield.
We need to get games into him quickly. The quicker he gets 50 under his belt the better.

As we were pushing for finals the selectors were more inclined to pick a more seasoned player with experience like Murphy, Schoenberg, Berry, Dowling (Who I really like) than to run with a first year player in Draper. They were quite content to leave him in the SANFL to "develop" his game while using those other players.
When he was used, it was primarily as a sub.

We should all be getting around him. Imagine him reading the comments about him here, and I bet the people saying it wouldn't say it to his face, they would be trying to shake his hand or get an autograph.

Yep. A developed Draper and Curtin are exactlly what the Adelaide midfield need. Add in a more developed Soligo. Futures bright. You'd expect that to be a few years away though. Go hard for Petracca now.

It's concerning that after players experienced finals for the first time and learned what the standard is like, they immediately played even worse in the second final.

That's why I'm not convinced we actually gained much from this supposed "finals experience".

I think what we actually gained is a hit to our belief and mental demons that will appear next time
My bet is they doubled down on the stupid game plan. Pepsi Nuts selling it as "stacks up in finals" won out. And it got promptly dismantled twice by game plans that actually stack up in finals. Rinse and repeat again next year is my guess.

That’s all fair enough. But let’s then consider the treatment of L Murphy. It got personal. Unlike Draper, where observers are merely pointing out his obvious flaws. If he can’t handle that, he probably doesn’t have the mental fortitude for AFL. Having said all of that, I’m all for giving the kid a chance.

I wonder if the selection of Draper early was to placate the fans a bit???

There were lots of questions around him being drafted and whether he’d play early or not, with hindsight he’d have been better off maybe having some more conditioning time in the preseason and getting his debut game a bit later in in the year.

So Collingwood, Hawks and Gold Coast twice plus Port, Eagles and Roos twice is a weak draw. Seriously?
For sure it was. We placed 15th the year before so our slot for 2025 was scaled. Like next year will be harder.

Chris Scott has created levers everywhere to pull. Double tagged Weddle and Watson, Danger into the midfield, Holmes wing/half back/midfield, throws Miers midfield, Blicavs anywhere, Mannagh midfield or forward, plays Martin forward or back, DeKoning and Blicavs switching back/ruck, hell dempsey started a CBA near the bench on the wing. He spoke about moving with or trying to get ahead of trends in the game in the presser. He is proactive and wants to dictate the game, keeps the opp constantly guessing. When you play Nicks you know exactly what your up against every time. His only move is put Rankine in the midfield.

Well theoretically we could have the same 3 teams in the double ups (given they have finished 1-6) plus Port or if you substitute Collingwood/Hawks/GC for either Geelong or Brisbane.

It won’t be any harder I reckon.

Just in case there are any coaches that haven't worked it out yet, the handbook to beat the Crows is:
Apply pressure
Tag Dawson
Loose man in defence
Don't bomb inside 50

Sounds similar to previous years.

Good call.

We can counteract 2, 3 and 4, which would in turn counteract 1.

2: Have more weapons in the midfield (Rankine/Rachele and hopefully as soon as next year Curtin/Draper) with hopefully Taylor and Pedlar pushing Soligo, Peatling and Berry so 2/3 of those are played on form. Also, do we still go with O'Brien as the sole option for the 8th season in a row? Bring in a hired gun? The beauty of the players we have in the mix is they all have flexibility to play in different parts of the ground, so again, hand over to the coaches how to get that mix right, at the right time and responsibility on most of those players to take their game to another level.

3: The coaches and defenders must be smarter than they were. Not matching up on Moore and leaving Keane on Gunston were dumb (non) moves.

4. Apply more pressure and work harder than the opposition. Provided the physical work is done, that comes down to attitude.

I think Geelong showed last night they are a level above Hawthorn and I suspect Brisbane Lions are their match, not Collingwood. We have a couple of levels to improve still.

Nicks is so much a sheep, no creativity, gets confused in his own thinking

When you play Nix you know that the Crows will likely start with the defensive, time using, slowing down, snuffing game plan style hoping that the opposition will wilt and the game come more to Crows terms. Classic big T sign Nix. The negative mind psyche of this overarching defensive style must have a blunting mental effect when extreme attacking effort is required in finals.
