News AFL overhauls Academy and FS bid matching, discussing draft lockout

It’s interesting in one argument you count Will and Levi as Victorian but in another Queensland. You need to make up your mind.
That's what ChatGPT told me, i have no idea who is from QLD from the Lions, The reason I asked. I also said they were from Sandy Dragons not Victoria, but nice try putting words in my mouth.

They should get rid of the discount for FS and Academy picks. Teams should have to use their next pick or a higher pick if they traded it away, plus the makeup points.
Stop the joke of teams trading away their future picks because they know the player will be good. That way teams can only get one first rounder unless they trade in to a higher pick. It would reduce the first round blowing out so much. If teams need a second first rounder that is higher than their original first round pick (if the bid comes before their pick) then they will need to trade or miss out on the player.

Although I do think any changes shouldn't occur for two years, give teams a two year warning.

No one mentioned priority picks.

I’ve made my position clear in this thread. If St Kilda want to propose a change that will achieve the purpose of academies be my guest. But all I get when I pose this question is deflections from Saints fans.
Posted my suggestions already, champ. No deflection.

It's pretty simple IMO.

AFL funds the academies.

You want a local academy kid or father/son, then pay what they are worth.

No discounts. Stop double-dipping.

Better yet, look at pre-draft bidding on nominated players. Again, pay a fair price.

Until such time that it becomes equitable and doesn't dilute the AFL's main equalisation tool, we will lobby for changes.

Frankly, I don't care if you land 2 father sons and three academy picks in one draft. If 3 of them are 10 talent then you pay with 3 first round picks or bad luck. Make sure you have those picks to use.

P.s. I'm still waiting for you to show evidence of our begging bowl. All you did was deflect. It was your accusation.

Why do you think the AFL isn’t funding academies?

You could have picked a few other players other than Heeney to make this point. Heeney is one of the best examples of someone who grew up in NRL heartland and played league and would have been funnelled into an NRL talent pathway if the Swans academy didn’t exist.
He's said himself that he would have played League if it wasn't for the Swans academy.

First round pick, the issue isn't producing quality talent from the northern states because your last four free hits all played for Sandy Dragons (both Ashcrofts, Fletcher and Marshall.) So why do you get such a discount for talent that was produced in Victoria But let's not talk about FS, I have a better question. How many QLD players do Lions have on there list?
So the Sandy Dragons are located in the western suburbs of Brisbane now?

Jesus dude, do some research before spouting so much misinformation.
That's what ChatGPT said. Clearly you didn't read that I have no idea and that's why I was asking. Your buddy Elixuh wasn't forthcoming with the list of 6 so I asked chatgpt. I know nothing about Brisvlbane and where there players were born.

You could quite easily find a list if you did 30 seconds of research rather than outsourcing your thinking to AI.

Why, I don't really care that much to do "30 seconds" worth of research. ChatGPT is perfectly find for most info gathering.

The key issue and question which needs to be addressed is how do we produce quantity of AFL talent from the Northern states?

Putting that to one side and addressing your proposed rule, if a player is bid on with pick 10, how do you match it?
I think a rule of 1st round picks are only matched by 1st round picks works ( perhaps top 5 picks can include R2 as well to top up your 3r1's used on bidding).
So if you win the flag and get a bid on your academy or F/S at pick 6, you pay 18, future R1, Future R1.
If you get a bid at 1, you pay (18, 36, future R1, Future R1).
This would be the most sensible approach
They should let this season be the existing rules, but surely close the trading for extra junk picks on the night. Also for 2026, limit the picks to match to be 3.

I believe the turning point was Andrew Pridham’s letter to the AFL, which highlighted the potential withdrawal of private funding from the academies. This likely prompted the AFL to recognise a financial risk they hadn’t anticipated or budgeted for, leading them to reconsider their stance.

Easy answer... By using a first round pick to begin with, then making up the points with other picks. No pick, no match!

So a pick 10 bid requires a "natural" pick from 10 - 18 just to begin matching.

I once asked it for a list of current players and it named people who hadn't been in the league for multiple years. Same if you ask it for players who've kicked x number of goals in a year or what have you.
Being AI, it’s so malleable to accident confirmation bias.

AI: wrong answer
User: ok, thanks!
AI: that answer must be good
