What is the process of let's say Will being traded to Carlton and he is travelling in South America? Is it literally Carlton would just waive the medical?

It would all but end it without a significant player, someone with true value, agreeing to go to Carlton.

Depends,

If you can get Carlton before the Dean bid in this years draft and get them a first next year the deal probably gets close.

EG (And this is just an example, nothing else).

Rowbottom and pick 11 to Richmond to pick 4.

Pick 4 and next year F1 along with Florent to Carlton.

Curnow and a late 2nd/ third to Sydney.

That probably gets the deal done.

Sydney would give their medical data to Carlton, Carlton also performed a medical on Hayward last year as part of their chasee.

In regards to Curnow, this would significantly hurt the Cat's chase of Curnow.

I think that’s why we are playing it perfectly, patience while the cats use their capital that could have been used on Curnow.
I trust the club regardless of what they do, give Cox a healthy or somewhat healthy list before we judge.
Obviously the big 4 can’t be traded, I’d love to trade out Warners dinky kicks, use ya left mate.

I'm talking about a CC to Geelong deal. If they deal #19 to St Kilda for Marshall it ends the pursuit of Charlie IMO, unless they can trade a player, who has some serious value and agrees to going to Carlton, plus the '26 & '27 1sts.

And that might also be why the Swans are making sure they are patient. Wait until Geelong shoots their shot and can't negotiate against a Swans deal. It just makes it a little easier for Sydney.

Also a good example of not getting your first club's preferences.

One of my jobs is as a S&C Coach/ Personal trainer.

My dream role? Probably to work with Tennis Australia keeps me close to home and I love my tennis.

But if I got a second preference with the Australian Institute of sport in Canberra or the Swans in Sydney... I would take that in two seconds.

These things happen in your work life.

Thing is he likely isn't getting too Geelong.

Lot's of players don't get to their preferred club, welcome to professional sport.

If he helps us get a flag, then I am all for it.
I'm all for it because I think the club have finally seen the light that although talented the current forward personal lack reliability for reasons such as injuries and inconsistency from week to week and in game. I also think that they acknowledge there are other areas that we have weaknesses but when you have a Star become available in an area you perceive to be a weakness you have to take a punt. Could We do With Petracca ? Hell Yes but Its not realistic because of salary purposes and he has nominated GC anyway which was on the cards as soon as he wanted out of Melbourne. I think they have alot of faith in Warner having aa better year, Heeney continuing to go to another level in his peak yrs and Mills to come back in the middle and get back to where he was before his body become his biggest issue which some of was self inflicted. Melican and McCartin to be strong pillars down back. All Ifs and all risky thought process but its the very reason they are prepared to gamble on Curnow.

So Rowbottom, Florent, Pick 11 and F1?

Good god.

Campbell needs to avoid falling into the same trap.

He needs to be putting figjam on his toast every morning.

His aspirational should be no lower than a generational small forward who can kick them from 60, collect and convert the loose balls, and pressure and tackle. He is currently only doing the last part well. The first part should be well in his wheel house - he just needs to be more selfish. The middle part should be his focus for development.
Agree with that, Campbell is another one who has fallen into the same trap. Just play my role, let the other guys do the heavy lifting.

Every single player on the list needs to be looking for their moment. There have been many games when we have looked flat and you just need 1 or 2 players to stand up and make things happen. More often than not, the responsibility has fallen on Heeney, Gulden and Warner. Blakey has had his moments as well. Add Grundy to that list as well. But in the games where we needed a circuit breaker. I can't remember another player being the one to provide that spark.

To win a premiership. You need a greater proportion of players who can stand up and make that play, and dig their heels in and have a purple patch to help drag the team out of a hole. We have had too few players in that basket, which makes us easier to nullify, and everyone else turns to Jelly when they see the same few leaders getting well beaten. Rather than the team as a whole lifting as a unit. And that's why we got pantsed in successive grand finals. So if you're not on that list, youre not essential.

In saying that, Mills has credits in the bank, Hayward has kicked goals against the grain (including in grand finals) when noone else was getting a sniff, Rowbottom plays an important defensive role. And I havent touched on defence. So there are assets defensively as well.

In regards to Curnow, this would significantly hurt the Cat's chase of Curnow.

Was always going to be the case Bonz after Mackie said Marshall was their number 1 priority. They have Cameron who is a Champion forward and one of the best to pull on the boots in the modern day and Neale who is a beast and a potential Superstar. In the ruck the have Rhys Stanley and back up of Blicavs. Where is their greatest need ? No Brainer.

Why do you think that heavy lifting doesn't include defensive acts? Seems to be a bit biased.

I agree that Campbell has to go for it a bit more instead of trying to do the team thing and he lost some polish this year. He also gets burnt by teammates when he's free/in better positions.

But I'd also suggest you go watch the last quarter or so of the 2024 Giants QF.

Have the feeling if Curnow is not in Sydney his life is going to become very uncomfortable because its going to be tail between legs going back through the door at Carlton. As much as a lot of clubs cave in when blokes want to go just have a gut feeling that Carlton will not relent here unless they get what they consider a win and lets be honest why should they ?

I know a fair few of our fans won't say this, BUT I really do think we have handled this situation really well.

  • We haven't rushed in, given our best hand and been told no early on (That hands over all bargaining power).
  • We are being careful with our players and actually changing the main parts of our list.
  • Still in this race up to our eyeballs.
Maybe we were, but we should have been having these discussions with our players weeks, if not months, ago.

Players would have had these discussions at their exit meetings.

Also trades are versatile and change rapidly, happens all the time in trade period.

We mustn't get sucked into this bullshit about "team trust & morale will be betrayed".
What a load of crap.
What about team morale when you have a bloke who was clearly our best or second best player in the 2022 GF & who has had to battle year to year for a career for the last ten years in Robbie Fox.
Robbie had to watch his highly remunerated team mates fall in a heap ion that day & he kept taking the game on & trying to get things going down back while relegating his opponent, Jezza Cameron, to the worst performed cat player in the game on the day.

How will these bloke keep their morale up knowing Robbie is now gone & was being paid far less than the were & never got to see 4 or 5 year contracts.

Team morale will be broken?

YEAH NAH!!

As I agree with this and as this has been my approach to this trade once the cost was mooted, it is again mystifying why we are proposing or pursuing it.

If the team lacks depth why reduce the depth still further by grabbing a player in an area we already have players in.

The only way this makes sense is that we believe we are a chance of a flag in the next three years. If that’s true then you can maybe justify the trade knowing that in five years we will have given ourselves no depth because we squandered our draft picks from 2025 and 2026 by giving them away for the 3-5 year sugar hit.

If we think the team can’t contend because they’re mentally shot we shouldn’t be pursuing a key forward and putting all our marbles in that jar including our future selection. We are simply throwing away our best way of restocking the larder by losing both draft picks and assets for trading.

It just seems to me that we are doing what you suggest that we do by getting curnow and adding him to the list because we can.

Unfortunately we aren’t facing the fact that the process of doing so is likely to make it less likely not more likely that we are contenders.

In which case what’s the point.

Gut feeling says that’s what they feel- we can jag one next year or year after while we still have Chad Warner. It’s a high idk strategy and one that will either be great or very bad. I have no issue doing it though what I have an issue is selling firsts for average players. Curnow is a two time AA well worth it.

I'm more concerned that as well as losing someone like Fox (although possibly injury concern), who turned up to both recent grand finals, that Swans fans, while lamenting grand final performances, are clapping along to one of a few who showed up last year being traded.
