Hi all,
As many of you would know from your respective club boards, I have been doing a rolling team of 21st century for last ~10 years which I try to update every year as changes required.
Most of the time, most boards agreed with at least ~20 players I choose however there's always a few differences.
To fill in the most boring time of year, I thought I'd rank each team's one. Only criteria I used were minimum 50 games for that club in this century and I favoured longevity over peak performance which is why some pretty talented injury-prone players missed out. I also tried mostly to pick players in position so there are some occasions where better players miss out.
#1: GEELONG
Unsurprisingly the most successful team of this century comes in at no.1. Unbelievably, every single player in this list is both an All Australian AND a premiership player.
#2: BRISBANE
All but 4 of the starting 18 come from the 2 premiership eras.
#3: HAWTHORN
Very tough to split from brisbane. Probably the best forward line out of this list maybe equal with geelong & richmond.
#4: WEST COAST
Hard to believe this team has only won 2 flags. Probably the best midfield in this list also maybe equal with geelong.
#5: SYDNEY
Maybe the most consistent team this century so not as many absolute top shelfers as the top 4 teams however a very even spread of great players. Not one weak link. Another ridiculous forward line.
#6: COLLINGWOOD
Starts to get a bit more tricky ranking from here on. Another star studded midfield up there with the very best.
#7: PORT ADELAIDE
Another team that should have won more premierships based just on paper. Lot of good players stiff to miss out on this side.
#8: MELBOURNE
A team that has been largely poor this century however at their peak were up there with the best this century has seen and also probably should have won more than 1 flag.
#9: RICHMOND
Tigers supporters, I promise this is not a lame ninthmond attempt! Similar to melbourne, outside of 4 elite years have largely been a poor side this century however this side is largely reflective of those 4 years with some absolute superstars in here and some others that were great serviceable players. Another destructive forward line up there with the very best in this list.
#10: ADELAIDE
Really good even spread of great players with quality on each and every line however not as many absolute superstars as the teams above. The only team I included a sub for as it would just be too stiffy to leave johncock out.
#11: BULLDOGS
Maybe the deepest midfield in this list. Few young guns to still break in.
#12: ST KILDA
Another very deep midfield and with exception of half forward flanks is a very strong team each line.
#13: FREMANTLE
Some absolute top shelf superstars and a fair few above average players filling out the rest.
#14: CARLTON
Probably the worst performed team this century, but in typical Carlton fashion has a few big name superstars up there with the very best in this list and then a lot of lesser lights filling out the rest.
#15: ESSENDON
Probably had the most dominant single season this century (yes I am counting 2000 even though technically shouldn't) but since then has been mostly downhill.
#16: GWS
12 years less to pick from than all the other teams however could still match it with most of these teams on their day.
#17: NORTH MELBOURNE
Expect these guys to move up this list in the upcoming years with so many gun youngsters coming through.
#18: GOLD COAST
Similar to north, a lot of gun youngsters coming through should see these guys climb up this list sooner rather than later.
Thoughts?
