Is it a case of:
A. Ken not wanting quality assistants, as it would make him feel threatened?, or
B. Quality assistants not wanting to come to Port, because they didn't like him/his reputation?
C. Maybe a bit of both?
Have no inside info but wonder if option D was club hellbent on saving $ and although Ken would make sure he gets a hefty salary, he's also happy to work in a half empty and bargain basement coaching box. If we got a good coach, he'd demand a full cast of assistants too.

Josh Carr was asked about Andy Collins and he said a few people who had worked with recommended him and listed 3 or 4 of them.

He said his brother had worked with him and recommended him. I scratched my head and thought where? how?

This arvo I checked and to my surprise Matthew Carr had been drafted by Collingwood and didn't play a game in 1996 and 1997 after being drafted #64 in 1995. He was traded and had 3 years at Saint Kilda, 1998-2000, for 28 games, so played lots of B grade, and Collins was the Saints B grade coach between 2000 and 2003 season.

How refreshing was that press conference… not going to say it’s life changing in anyway but man just the sound and change in that delivery of information was nice to hear. That was someone that wants to succeed but knows that it’s needs to be built rather than guaranteed… or not guaranteed… or what you deserve or some crap

Imagine having a coach who thinks he can be developed and choosing support staff who can do that. Oh wait, now we do!

Collins comes across as very thoughtful, passionate and committed to improving the coaching group and players.
