"Working people want leaders whose word means something."
Excellent post.It is of international significance that Mamdani has won the vote and become the mayor of NY. He won the election on the basis of opposing genocide in Gaza and demanding limited reforms to mitigate the massive social inequality in NY, and throughout the US.
It shows that the next generation is seeking out an alternative, and that they are not fazed by the word "socialism". In fact, they see it as preferable to capitalism.
However, as will soon become clear, Mamdani has no other role but to trap the desire for social equality and opposition to genocide and barbarism within the futile framework of parliamentary politics.
He will limit his actions to appeals to the very Democrat establishment that supports and enables the genocide in Gaza.
He has already lurched to the right after his election victory, making public statements in which he promises that he will not infringe upon the extreme wealth of the Wall St executives.
We are about to witness an extreme playing out of political reality, in which millions will be enlightened about the fakery of the DSA, and the impossiblity of solving any of the fundamental social issues by supporting them.
Wait and see.
100%. At first Obama, and the new wave of Bernie, AOC and now Zohran are vehicles to redirect progressive energy back to the Democratic party no matter how shit lite they are. She's such a fake.
It wont be the Dems that save them it will be God"He spent an entire campaign mainly talking about affordability. About how unaffordable it has become to live in America’s largest city, from rent to food to public transit.
In doing that, he transformed the political calculus from one that scapegoated marginalised communities to one of people fighting alongside everyone else for a better life."
this is precisely what the dems need to do. fight for the marginalised.

Probably trueZM is no different to any other politician. Promise the world but deliver an atlas.
Depends how you define Socialism. I know what it meant to me in the 70s and 80s and I was relatively happy with the Australian Socialism model - though I also recognised the Government bloat that createdI don't doubt why a lot young people feel so against capitalism, and feel so up against it financially.
But socialism is not the answer. Better policy within capitalism framework is.
We can agree to disagree - again it depends on your definition of the Socialism ModelSocialism has never worked. It wont all of a sudden work now.

Alot of his economic policies make no sense to anyone who understands basic economics and if anything will make cost of living worse for people in NY than it is now if they are implemented. I doubt many of them will even be implemented, the checks and balances he will need to go through wont allow it i don't think.

It definitely will be interesting to see.
As the old saying goes, sometimes you need to touch the stove to remember it's hot.
Probably true

And this goes to your last line. Better Government within a socialist framework

Here in SA - and I assume other states the Water, Gas and Electricity were all Government or at least 51/49By American standards a lot of stuff we do here would be shouted down as socialist.

Telecom was Government and I assume other utilities - CES and Social Security also
While there was bloat its not as bad as it is today with Centrelink and Job Networks all charging much more than government costs etc
But Im guessing Hirdys Socialism is some woke agenda that takes the cows milk and gives it to everyone
Rampant capitalism clearly doesn’t work. Not for 99% of the population.Socialism has never worked. It wont all of a sudden work now.

I have long been an advocate of the 'salad bar buffet' approach to politics rather than one of absolute ideological purity. We take what best sustains us, and we leave the rest. You know it's not a thing where you only choose one or the other right?
You can take good elements from any form of government.

Newscorp (conveniently) never mentions those countries so they barely even know they exist.nonsense. you need to get out more. try sweden, denmark, and norway as your starting point
