I actually think it is stupid. Greed is always stupid, it's always destructive. Look how the US is devolving largely because of greed, assisted by it's companions stupidity and corruption. It's the same old story, the elites get too greedy, the poor get less and feel disenfranchised and the societies spiral into increasing anarchy.

Greed kills empires. This is not my idea, the late great, train loving historian Harold Perkin wrote extensively about the collapse of empires and how in most cases this occurs because the elites take too much. This describes the current state of the US. The big problem is they just don't see it, which is probably not surprising as these are folks who were dumb enough to tout a 'Greed is good' philosophy.

I agree with you completely. from a macro, historical sense what you wrote is absolutely true.
I was making a much narrower point that I don't believe the spineless reptiles currently occupying the GOP are completely ignorant of the harm they are doing but that they just don't care because they are so utterly selfish and amoral.

Its deliberate, selfish, self serving malice rather innocent ignorance.

I do agree that many of them may be stupid and historically ignorant enough not to join the dots and are acting our of what is essentially a blinkered, stupid ideological position but I think the most part of it is pure greed.

Certainly for Trump, a classic malignant narcissist - other people, history, science, evidence, you name it, doesn't enter into it. Its just bloated rotting greed to the point of evil.

He first agreed he said these things now he is a chance at the top job he is denying it. Instead of saying it was youthful folly he doubles down on the denials

Now, though, the man whose party is leading in all major opinion polls and says he expects to be in Downing Street, appears to have changed tack.

In legal letters to the Guardian, he has emphatically denied saying anything racist or antisemitic when he was a teenager.

He has also questioned whether there is any public interest in airing allegations that date back over 40 years.
