What's the legality of these contracts and can they be enforced??

Pub chat today raised the question about the young Monty lad that signed with LP only to change his mind. Now from what was said LP, whilst disappointed will not try and enforce his signature and cut their losses.

My question is, could they? You hear some trying to hold players to a contract but legally, can they?

I remember years ago big Mick Gay sat out a season, I am sure I was told it was a contract he had with Epping but did not want to play with them so signed at Heidelberg and sat out the last year on his Epping contract. Anyone confirm that is on the mark?

Read on here that there are possibly a few Macleod blokes wanting to leave to a Div3 side but have been told they would not be released.

I always thought these contacts where nothing legal and you can only really stop a bloke leaving if he owes money. You can question their character (which should be taken into question if your word is easily dismissed) but circumstances do change I suppose (and I am sure $$ fly's around)

Has there been other players held to contract? I their precedence of it?

Just curious, and no I am not signing a contract, in my day it was your word and that showed your character. My only contract is with the canteen and bar, I promise to use them.
Players wouldnt be happy if a cl
Contracts and Clearances both start with C but two different words. I was talking about contracts.

However, if he did take a sign on fee, I agree what would happen as he has always been with Mont and they could just register him for 24, shows contracts are not worth the paper they are written on I suppose.
so if a bloke signs a contract say in Nov then the club signs a couple of better players in say Feb the club is within it's right to tell the first player that he's not required the offer is rescinded and he can go anywhere and try to get a new offer?
If players can walk then why can't clubs rip up contracts at their discretion?

I’m not sure of the specifics in this case…

But if a club says we have 50 on the track every night blah blah and you arrive and there are 2 players then you’d probably change your mind.

Agree, but probably should have done a few sessions prior to signing and smiling in social media posts. Just reflects bad.

I am sure there are buyers remorse by some blokes that have signed and regretted it. I was just raising the question on the legality of signatures, seems they mean nothing.

I would think most times in this scenario he would not be selected.

Seems to me so many clubs trying to launch or retain women’s sides and struggling badly.

Seems the initial boost from AFLW has slowed. I think junior participation is good so will take a few years. Will be interesting to see if Lower or Panton Hill can get sides off the ground

Yep - Over the past couple years quite a few clubs are launching teams, but meanwhile existing clubs are dropping out/reducing the number of teams. I think ta combination of the initial boost slowing, but also players drifting off into other comps which run their W footy better than NFNL.

As an outsider but speaking over the years to some of the participants I think the hardest thing the NFNL has to deal with is when they play.

At the moment its mainly around junior fixtures on Sundays. As some of these ladies get older this is not overly convenient as they start to have families, obviously there is work on the Monday and just basically using facilities that say U17 boys are in prior.

I think the more they can fit on a Friday night or even (and had been done many times) after mens on a Saturday (which most clubs should be happy with as it encourages more over the canteen/bar) the better.

The other option would be playing on a Saturday when mens are away. Maybe will not get any real crowd as I know where most will be but it should be tried. Sundays, I was told was one of the biggest inconvenience.

Agree Denny, we have lost several players this season due to Sunday comp (VAFA was Saturdays) as we have a young list who work Sunday (triple time) to support Uni studies. I have been told that in the next two years AFL Vic will instigate Saturday playing options for female footy. I think a 'festival of footy' with 4 games across a Saturday would be great for all involved. We did it over the last few years and it was excellent!

Chump.

Surely Saturday games could work? Grounds should be easily available with no juniors on. Girls could play on research park, Susan street, Anthony Beale etc.

Or if no 19s prior to the ressies
Personally, I think a better answer to the problem is "we're all one club playing together on our home game with the same facilities and opportunities, and we'll share the space" than "here's a spare junior oval that probably won't have bar or canteen open" if the clubs and the league are serious about women's footy

That’s fine, but if 19s are playing when do you suggest they play.

You can play 4 games in a day easily and it's MUCH better for the vast majority of staff and volunteers. It works - we have done it.

Further to that IF it can't be every week, you get the chance to flip a few games to Friday nights, Saturday nights or even Sundays after juniors.

19s and Women can rotate Fri night / Sat?. As soon as every club has decent lights I can assure you Fri night footy is a lock. Every time we have done it canteen and bar does well, people come and with AFL on TV it's an event.

NFNL needs to get off their arse and support those clubs without proper lights by representing to local councils and AFL to show this is a critical issue.

My previous post put forward my suggestion - similar to Champ or Chump, rotate teams through the twighlight slot, and have weekends with 4 home games on a Saturday (women season is shorter, and won't always align, likewise u19s doesn't always align, so wouldn't be all home games)

I feel that the 19s are a bigger concern at the moment with clubs struggling with numbers. I know some clubs have 2 U19s teams and kudos to the clubs who have achieved that. My point is that with not every club having 19s or in a lot of cases the 19s not playing at the same venue as the senior & reserves it’s very problematic in that clubs have to find a whole new group of volunteers to be able to get them on the ground. Training staff, time keepers, umpires escorts and sometimes even boundary and/or goal umpires. The other issue is the time of the games. A lot of the kids are apprentices and have to work on Saturday mornings. The kids don’t get paid to play so knocking back some overtime is a big ask and some may not even get the choice. Why can’t we play 2 games at the venues with proper lighting every Friday night. Whichever 2 sides play the first game on the Friday night then play the second game the following week. The clubs would be able to easily fill the game day roles without having to find the extra people if they were playing at another venue on the Saturday. I’m sure there’s a way to equalise the financial side of things. Just a thought 🤔

Are you saying 2 games so some clubs would be playing a neutral venue?

Double header Friday night for girls and 19s could work…

Yeah we could continue to change venues so clubs don’t consistently get a home ground advantage but we have enough grounds with the proper lighting to be able to make it work. It would also solve the shortage of umpires by not having to send umpires to different locations on Saturdays so umpires could do a Friday night game and then do Saturday. We would have a much bigger pool of umpires by playing Friday nights and Saturday

A number of clubs in the Perth Football League (WA equivalent of the ammos) schedule 'Super Saturdays' with four matches:

Game 1 at 9.30
Game 2 at 11.30
Game 3 at 1.25
Game 4 at 3.20

Usually it goes Womens/Colts/Reserves/Seniors but the first two games usually get rotated around a bit and a couple of clubs have one or two days a year where the seniors is at 1.25 and the women at 3.20.

I'm guessing they don't have time on in their colts/u19's or ressies, but that's the general gist of it

Out of interest, what time would the games be? Realistically game 1 can't be before 6.30pm, which means game 2 starts at roughly 8.30pm - I don't see that taking off

But 1 thing I do agree, it's worth trying to shake things up a bit if it helps clubs retain women and u19's.

I was thinking 6 - 6.15 for the first game 20 minute quarters no time on for the first half or indeed the whole game. Clubs have started training by that time during the week anyway. The second game could then start around the 8 o’clock mark. As I said earlier we can change the teams around so the same teams aren’t playing the later game every week.

Not a bad idea. An option away from Saturdays is a good idea due to so many tradies being asked to work
