Autopsy Round 22, 2025: Positives and Negatives vs Adelaide

I don’t even know what they’re arguing about? ^
I think it's young teams lose game late, vs game plan doesn't hold up late.
Why it can't be young teams can't execute game plans late, because of fatigue... IDK
I think that would make them both right.

It is this, versus “young players don’t get more fatigued on average because the Telstra Tracker shows them running really far which means they’re at peak fitness”.

Ah, welp having skimmed some posts I'll go with...
I don't see a lot of 18 year olds at Olympic events and if I do they are hailed as a prodigy.
Mid 20s is probably where it's at.
Young enough to be in the prime while not using effort as a substitute for Smarts and technique.

McCarthy was unbelievable, our kids were great, effort was fantastic given (despite arguments in here) both our fitness and system/gameplan were far less advanced than theirs.

Do just want to highlight Tim Kelly. Deservedly bashed on here, but I dunno mental health is a bitch and he's clearly been battling this year. Absolutely stood up today, scrapped in, wrenched out kicks, tackled like a maniac, forced the ball forward, saw multiple times him getting around players like Davis/Shanahan/even Gross when coming to the bench etc.

He's naturally an outside opportunist that at best is a Shane Edwards for Richmond - the cherry on top who isn't quick enough, big enough or even talented enough to be a #1 mid but would have been great behind Martin, Prestia and Cotchin. It'd be rough being tagged for years straight if you didn't have a physical attribute you could beat anyone with or other dangerous mids around you to take heat off.

Certainly doesn't excuse most of this year where he's been borderline pathetic at times but in a game like today stood up beyond his station like he has many a time in seasons past. With hindsight (Yeo and Shuey dying while we were in contention) he wasn't the player for us we wanted him to be, but efforts like today win a lot of respect back. Hope he's back in full force next season alongside a fitter Reid/Hewett/Hough/Hall + a good recruit or two and gets to justify that contract.

With great respect.

What are you guys watching?

Matt Owies is the equivalent of a fumbly salamander in the forward line. He doesn't get his hands to the ball, can't jump and opposition sides can be so aggressive with their defensive set up.

He's nowhere near it. Letting his opponents rack up huge numbers and not kicking goals.

That's it for me for the year, lads. I'm only coming back to post AFLW Eagles stuff but as far as the mens side goes I'm scorched.

Catch everyone come finals time

Good effort. Tim Kelly, where has that been? Haven’t seen that sort of game from him in years.

With great respect.

What are you guys watching?

Matt Flynn is the equivalent of a walking wicket in the centre square. He doesn't get his hands to the ball, can't jump and opposition sides can be so aggressive with their centre square set up.

He's nowhere near it. Letting his opponents rack up huge numbers.
I think its because at least with Flynn, even though he is largely useless, there isn’t 10 clangers or dumb decisions per game that make you want to smash your head against concrete unlike the other ‘ruckman’ we have.

Unreal stuff here.

We didn’t lose because of fitness, we lost because the system fell down late.

Why do some teams stand up stronger, for longer? Is it cause they’re just the team with the best skills and they wait until right at the end to show them off? Was our system found out by some coaching master stroke deployed in the final 10 minutes?

Or is that every link in the chain being 5% off their peak at once makes a huge difference, that that’s what makes the system fall down as the game goes on: guys not having that extra bit to give, or properly chase, or lead hard to make space for the guy behind them, because they’re spent.

Time trial fitness does not equal match fitness. It shows where your baseline is in a controlled environment, but doesn’t mean you’ll be able to lay that tackle or win your one on one after two hours of footy. Of course I’m obviously not a very bright person and my sense for the game is terrible so you’ll have to take the word of close to every single pro athlete in the history of the organised sports instead. The average age of teams are getting older year on year and it’s obviously just a big coincidence designed to make you look foolish, not confirmation that experience and actual football conditioning matter.

Next year we should skip the footy all together and just do a big relay sponsored by Telstra, given all our kids are the fittest in footy we might win the flag 💪💪💪
I think we are also less fit than most other sides. That is obvious. And it is to be expected when you have a side as young as ours is. It takes multiple pre seasons to build a tank. It's not a big deal. It's not a criticism. It is to be expected and will be rectified over time. But it is also an obvious reality.

The time to be upset about being beaten for fitness and run is when you have a mature side on the park who have had those pre seasons to build and maintain a tank. And instead they have turned up for pre season and not done the work. Which is what was hapenning in the last 3 - 5 years of Simpson's reign (and whilst you were cheering him on and thought he was doing a great job).

Guys I don’t know if you know this but [player who most people scream to be delisted most weeks and is only playing on a technicality] isn’t very good.

Gee thanks for the input, next you’ll say we should try to win more games next year.
We should really try to win more games next year.

This is like with us having to put up with Ricciuto on fox for all our games, it's a joke. Atleast Pav isn't employed by Freo
I feel for you mate. I have no bias to either of the SA teams but Ricciuto is a bona fide nitwit.
He doesn't know any of the players, rules, tactics, generally just adding dumb comments of no value.
I've seen plenty of players try and fail with their media careers, it truly amazes me that he has lasted this long

Honorable mentions for failed media attempts:
Peter Wilson (Tribal Warfare)
Brett Kirk (Sunday Dreamers)
Drew Banfield (Elbow locked in a 90o)
Glen Jakovic (Head took up most of the screen)

Ill take Roo over Pavlich any day of the week. Miserable campaigner he is

Yes, this is exactly the point I was making.

My only thought is that he was carrying something earlier in the season. Has been a different player in the last three weeks.

takes a few years to build a base, and old players slowely loose itv through injuries etc.

I don't know if it's come up yet but we must never speak of the 're-enactment' of the 'Golden Thread' play that was played out at quarter time.

The cringggggge.

What did they actually do for those of us not there?

Saw a clip somewhere where a guy in an Eagles jumper kicked a goal from the Sheed angle (only on his right) and thought that actually pretty impressive

Such insight, I don't know how we all missed it.

I thought it was great fun. Had four randoms (looked like they were ammos or something because they did execute their skills pretty well) re-enact the "golden thread". Last guy slotted the goal and got a big cheer from the crowd. Crept over the mark about 10 meters but still kept the angle.
