Apples and oranges. Bradman stats, and the rest of the world agreeing, make him an untouchable. On top of that he played internationals against quality.
You are talking a time when it was part time suburban comp.

‘Part timers in a suburban comp’ yet you’ve cited a largely amateur cricketer who played in two countries and at 10 venues his entire career, and against 4 opponents, one of them 37 times out of his 52 matches.

Do you not think that the part timers in a suburban comp puts everyone on the same level, same as what they would all be on if they were growing up 60 years later as semi or fully professional in a national comp?

The term is ‘relativity.’

This, you can only really assess someone relative to their peers.

Modern day AFL players are a totally different beast, as good as someone like Dangerfield is now, if you dropped him in to football 50 years ago he'd be head and shoulders above anyone else in the league.

Transport Nat Fyfe back in time to 1963 and he's ruckman sized.

Lance Franklin stands out more relative to his peers than Lockett or Dunstall did as well from memory.

Played at the peak against the world.
We are talking a time there was no peak but multiple state based comps.

No I don’t think that at all.
The term is ‘relativity.’
You can call it what you want but no guarantee they would hit the peaks with full time training in a national comp.

Now once again I never said they definitely wouldn’t. I was originally replying to someone having a whinge because people were only adding players from eras they had seen.

The best in the world was two countries, basically, and the only opposition he could actually play against was largely restricted to a classicist society in England and THEN the people he competed against further dissipated to two groups, only one of which he competed with in terms of his direct competition (batsmen).

It’s a fairly odd delineation.

Maurice was as good a player as any of them, just didn't have the big body of work in Tiger colours like the other 4.
Yeah I hear ya…but I’m 55. I saw the 79’-82’ tiger superior strength with my own eyes every ESs v Tigs game at the time.

Rioli and KB used to mesmerised me with their evasion skills. No Essendon player seemingly could never lay a hand on them.

They were both lean and slinky..KB was as slippery as an eel and couldn’t be brought down. Rioli just sidestepped blokes with ease repetitively and dismissed them as they lunged at him.

I saw with my young eyes many times from the punt rd end …superb teamwork goals started from MR as he was palming backwards and sideways and straight to a running Richmond mid out of the centre bounce that went 20 mtrs ..the end result 4 seconds later was a running shot straight through the guts.

Those two stick in my mind like concrete.

Unbeatable.

Historically wise ..ours Is Hutchison, Reynolds and Hird.

A bunch close behind…

Coleman and Thurgood two amazing players from all I have read.

Reynolds career just incredible, he did it all. Star player, captain and great coach. Longevity and got the three Brownlow's. Have seen some footage of him and just a very smart and polished player.

This may be controversial, but as good as Peter Daicos was, his reputation has been enhanced as a sire.

I saw Peter Daicos' entire career, and yes he was a great player. But at no stage did I ever think he was amongst the best handful of players in the comp, or even Collingwood's standout best player.

For that reason, I have Pendlebury and Buckley ahead of him, with Nick Daicos poised to.join them in the best 3 Pies players I have seen.

Carlton won 3 flags during that era you mention and you reckon Tigers were the best?
