Why does everyone think this list will win a premiership we don’t have any players in the top of their position besides maybe Jackson after yesterday. Serong is an absolute jet but his skill set is limited and would have the likes of daicos Anderson Bont butters gulden Heeney richards and so on above him. Young really good doesn’t find enough of the footy to be elite. Bray is very limited just a work horse.
Fwds Treacy is the closest we have to top of line but he wouldn’t be in the top 5 fwds in the comp. And back line we have no genuine A grade players Clark is close but his skill level is no where near a Zorko which we need him to be.

We are lacking top end talent compared to the best teams we are deep but don’t have anyone to say get on my back I’ll do it all myself. Serong saying slow it down down 7 with 5 mins to go proves that we don’t have anyone with a killer instinct in our side if that’s butters Bont or daicos they play on there and make things happen. I don’t know if that’s a JL problem or not but being to passive is a problem
It’s round one playing Geelong in Geelong. They will beat 95% of teams down there.

I would even say if they played Gold Coast in Geelong that result would be very different.

It’s a long season no team is perfect and as is normal supporters react from one week to the next.

Our list is very strong I don’t by into your statement that it is over rated. We all just need to sit back and let the first 6 - 8 weeks unfold before going for blood. I learnt that last year after the first two rounds I wanted blood.

One thing I did find disappointing was selection integrity and I believe it has back fired on us massively. The selection of Darcy blew up in our faces, he wasn’t match ready and that showed. Cox should have been playing and Darcy get conditioning through the WAFL.

Crows played a shitter team than we did. Collingwood really are not even that good anymore. Crows also ALMOST lost that game and held on.. Just!
They didn’t almost lose… they were comfortably ahead and Collingwood jagged a couple back in junk time when the pressure went off.

Its a bit of a tough one because hes clearly got the group connected and committed long-term.

I feel like, if we do stick with him we need to blow the soft cap and get someone like Longmire in to support in a senior assistant role.

WTF is "someone like Longmire"?
Are them on a shelf at Bunnings?
Yeah...nuh
Don't spoil the narrative..JL must go!
Now !
Sadly I am now worried I am in real danger of being taken seriously with this post!
Back our guys in FFS !
The battle has begun!
Yokai!

Sorry, should I have been more specific?

What i meant to say is 'a Human being that has coached a succesful AFL side and could assist JL tactically, both on-field and at the selection table'

This is pretty much the nagging pang of pessimism that shackles my faith in success in the near future: That the list is...good but not great. A lot of players overrated in their positions (and their potentials). Serong being the big one you mentioned: Has broken into the conversation of the best players in the game without really the skillset or body to make it any further than merely being brought up as an honourable mention in that conversation. If we're going to be a premiership team, especially from the west, we need midfielders who will surpass Serongs ceiling. So much rides on the development of Young and Reid.

I keep hearing and seeing glimpses that we're flush with talent and a team on the rise but I can't really escape this thought. I want to, I try to but f*** it makes it all the more painful when we're brought back down to earth.

Disagree, I think this list is capable of winning or at least contending for a premiership and I think the 1st quarter yesterday proved it. We’ve done this regularly over the past few years, where we will look like world beaters for a quarter and spend the other 3 quarters on the back foot. That makes me think it’s a coaching problem.

I don’t think we have the best list in the league, that distinction belongs to either of the QLD teams (thank you AFL), but I think we have a top 4 list, and with good coaching a top 4 list is very much capable. If Chris Scott was in the Freo box and Longmuir was in the Geelong box yesterday we win that game, you can’t convince me otherwise.

Agree that we don’t have a player who can carry us like prime Fyfe or Pav did, but I think with our list the load is more evenly spread where that is not a necessity. We definitely don’t have enough killer instinct. We are one of few teams who you wouldn’t be able to trust with a 50 point lead because you know instead of sensing the kill and turning up the heat, we will instead sit back, conserve and let our opponents back into the game. Which is again, a coaching problem.

Do you actually thing Justin Longmuir will get us a flag with this current list?
He CAN.
No one can predict who WILL win out of 18 teams.
I THINK he has coached and led the development of our playing group to contention.
This list and coaching team CAN get us a flag, actually.

Freo was discussed at length yesterday on ABC's Footy Forum(?) yesterday and it was Jake Niall, a reasonable thinker, who concluded something along the lines of "Freo have all positions covered by quality players, but lack a couple of really dynamic players/game breakers that it takes to be top 4". Sounds reasonable to me. Probably Jackson is our exception. Serong, who is probably our next best player, just lacks the ability to break out of packs and run. He's dynamite in the pack and great at feeding it out, but too rarely makes a big play towards goal. Young (and even Simpson?) has the potential, but looks underdone still. Maybe he'll come good. Bolton is too one-dimensional and not good enough in the contest to do this. Reid clearly has the potential, but will need to learn to deal with close attention like Cats gave him yesterday after the first quarter. Clark still a lone ranger driving from the back, so easy to lock down.

Longy definitely made a bad decision here as:

1. By his own admission he had prior to the game recognised Geelong would have better match conditioning.

2. Despite this, he played an underdone Darcy who could not cover the ground.

3. His selections played straight into Geelong's tactical advantage.

It doesn't excuse the AFL for the stupidity of Opening Round. But, Longy didn't help himself with his selection.

the Darcy selection also flies in the face of Luke Ryan being made to work his way back through Peel to full fitness.

Selection Integrity completely torpedoed.

JLo has his poster boys, and Darcy seems right up there. He often refers to the fact that Darcy "is one of the best ruckman in the comp". Im not sure what data he is looking it, but I would suggest it is at least 3 years old. The game is only getting quicker, and if you listen to Max Gawn's interview yesterday, he mentioned it was his running ability that keeps him relevant with the new rule changes.

I would suggest a solid block of 4 weeks at Peel to give Sean the best chance of maximising his running ability would be his best bet of maintaining relevance, and contributing to the team meaningfully. Anything short of that, and we're not even giving the bloke a chance.

Spot on.

Managed minutes to Darcy, Pearce and Dudlee was a big risk. I'm not surprised we were run over. Mind you, we were already without Cox, so Pearce kind of had to play, and Dudlee is an impact player. The Darcy over Cox one was the blunder.

Hopefully Pearce is ready for full minutes, and we play Ryan who is match hardened next week. Our back 6 were slaughtered in the last quarter so I'd expect a change.

I'm not so sure it was a 'poster boys' selection. They dropped O'Meara and Banfield, who are/were favourites. I won't be surprised if JOM is seriously considered for selection this week, or both.

They didn’t drop JOM, he was injured. JOM is in our best 23, at least in JLo’s eyes, he will be back if fit.
Banfield isn’t, and is depth.

Thanks - I didn't know that. I searched and he didn't come up anywhere on the injury list.

Kane Cornes said that the Swans have the best top 5 in Heeney Lizard Curnow Goulden Chad which is fair with Brisbane, GC and Freo with Jackson Treacy Young Serong Brayshaw the other clubs in the mix.

We've been rebuilding for a decade. Our list is strong. The match committee cost us 4 points by going with the unfit Darcy over Cox who was close to BOG against the Crows in pre-season.

What's the solution then? Go hard for Chad and Kossie and if they don't come trade out anyone with currency and start rebuilding again?

If players that have had years in the system haven't progressed that's on JLo and the other coaches. Guys like Chapman, NOD, Switta, Johnson and Amiss do seem to have regressed in recent years.

Disagree with Johnson: he had a pretty good game. And I think NOD's drop off was because of injury. He looked much better against the cats after a full preseason. I don't think every player's lack of development is down to coaching, either. They may have flattered early but their actual potential may not be as great as we have thought.

I think we could try again for either of Chad or Kossie - or I think their is still hope for Young and Reid to become very damaging. One is still learning his position and getting back to fitness while the other is still quite young. We would be looking at Jackson, Young, Reid and possibly Bolton to add the needed flair.

Its a catch 22 with Darcy.

He can't get match fit not playing matches.

But when he plays he isn't contributing enough yet to justify his selection and it's hurting us.

Do we continue to select him knowing we won't see his best for a few more weeks or do we just say enough is enough and run with Cox/Jackson.

I want to see the Freo that went and got Lyon. We saw flaws in the current coach, went and got one of the absolute best. Made it happen, and it was almost perfect. We are too nice as a club and fanbase.
The actual problem is who is that person that is the best?

I think we've got enough evidence in the bank to suggest that Sean takes a few weeks to get going after injuries. I remember we brought him back from injury round 6 2024 for the Derby and we collectively got embarrassed by Harley Reid and a historically bad West Coast.

Off the back off a month with a calf where his ability to run is limited - I think it's pretty clear it was an unwise call to play him v Geelong.

Hindsights great though - we probably thought we could manage his minutes, and the potential for the Darcy / Jackson combo to dominate Edwards must have been tempting enough that we named him.

Not sure where that leaves us this week against Gawn. I'd probably go with M.Cox myself.

He needs to force his way in. Cox has exposed form. It's poor selection integrity to pick him on the weekend, and now you've seen it in action, surely he gets a spell in the magoos after that. He's a total liability.

We can't afford a bloke who can barely move out there. Cox allows us to still use Jackson how we want while actually giving us something around the ground and potentially up forward. Could even go back as a spare if all hell breaks loose.

Darcy can do none of that. It's actually comical how poorly his body functions from taking possession to deciding what to do to then attempting to execute a skill to dispose of it. He looks half paralysed.

He literally can't do it.
