Preview R2: Changes vs. Western Bulldogs

The pile on against Laird continues. Game high 34 possessions and did good things down back. Couple of howlers. So what? He wasn't Pat Malone.
You mean 25 and not game high?
5 turnovers but 8 intercepts.

God you talk nonsense.

Hes not going anywhere.

Everyone wants to bring in Rankine, nobody wants to talk about which of the lowest performing mid-fwds need to make way for him, and someone has to because you can't pick 24 players.

Doesn't matter how they got there, Pedlar and Ah Chee as fwd-mids offered very little yesterday, as did Soligo as a pure mid, so they must be in the conversation about who goes out for Rankine, who is one of the first players selected when we're at 100%, certainly before all of them.

Throwing up names like Toby Murray doesn't help, because that's a structural change we're not going to make after 1 game. Murray wasn't great, but he's only going out for someone else who can come in and play ruck minutes, and I expect they'll give him more time as it's a choice between a very small number of fringe players.

I will happily keep the Laird pile on going because his turn overs are usually at critical stages, easily avoidable and usually directly lead to opposition goals. Plus in Bond we have him easily covered.

Last night, Q1 - too slow, holds onto the ball too long and gets chased down AGAIN! For once he didn't kick into the man on the mark at least
Q2 - coming out of defense kicks directly to Collingwood players
Q2 - another poor disposal, goes over team mates head
Q4 - no pressure and manages to kick to to Collingwood players between our two players.

Yes he gets it, but with ball in hand I have limited confidence it will be effective and often actually hurts us.

Yep…

And boy were they another 34 completely “damaging to the opposition” possessions eh!!..

Laird has done this his entire career.. bamboozled our supporters with game high possession counts.. but when you actually scratch the surface.. when you actually put those possessions under the microscope… most of those possessions are cheap one’s and the results often doing no damage to the opposition.

How often does he take a mark or get a free off half back, stand behind the mark for an eternity wondering what to do with it only to end up kicking long (well, actually, more like HIGH) to a contest where the opposition team has had the chance to man up on every team mate.

How often does he selfishly demand a cheap hand off from a team mate just to up his possession count.

The bloke is a fraud.

And the “its only one or two clangers a game” claim is not only nonsense (its far more than that) its a massive liability in a game in which momentum is king.
Two of his ridiculous clangers last night resulted in momentum changing goals that let the pies back into the game.

Its completely unacceptable from a veteran player.

He wants to keep racking up cheap possessions?.. he can go do it in the SANFL thanks..

Rankine in, Bond out

Roll Cook back to half back where he trained in the pre-season, Ah Chee up to the wing
Same for me.

Given English is the fittest ruckman, we need to double team him.

Also, Soligo wont get match fitness by dropping him.

B: Michaelanny, Butts, N Murray
HB: Cook, Worrell, Milera
C: Ah Chee, Dawson, Cumming
HF: ANB, Fogarty, Keays
F: Rankine Thilthorpe, Walker
R: McAndrew, Berry, Rachele
I: Laird, Peatling, Sologo, Pedlar, T Murray

ROB in for Turray.

That’s it.

Rankine to have a bit more time to think about what he did last year.
Maybe the club can give him the extra 6 games some were looking for on here

Changes? Hopefully not our good recent record against the brachycephalic pooches!

They look good so far, so this will be another big test. I back us to get the four points at home.

Don't want to have to carry Murray, as McAndrew can't go all game, but not sure what solution is. As I don't want RT playing ruck either, forward / midfield only.
The bench-system used to have a Reserve, who played a variable amount of time, depending on injury (or later, tactics).
I think Turray was treated like a "floating Reserve", so to speak, which explains the 32% game time, except that his time on ground was not in a single block as it would have been as a Reserve.
Nicks/Murray subbed him on when McAndrew needed a break and it worked. We won.

Will it work again on Friday night? We'll see.
In his presser, Nicks gave no indication that he was unhappy with Turray's game.
It could change later anyway as McAndrew builds up his tank. Tex could take an occasional ruck contest in the F50.

Not sure they’ll trust Ah Chee on a wing off his preseason. And Cook was pretty good, they probably will wan t to add continuity to that. I think the most obvious is the answer, straight swap, no other movement required, Pedlar for Rankine. And if Bond or Murray were to go, it’ll be someone else coming in that can play that role.

Interesting selection though, this is where historically we’ve gotten a midweek injury and Murphy has survived. I really am looking forward to seeing which way they go.

Whats up with Riley Obrien? Whys he on the outter? Is it because of the change to Centre ball up or is there something else? Isn’t he clearly the best ruck at club?
Bloke can't jump. Rule change absolutely played a part. But folks in this sub were already mostly agreed that ROB was a 4/10 at best, given his very lacking around the ground and inconsistent marking power. So you won't find many here who are disappointed we're trying something else

If Rankine comes in, we can run Soligo off a wing or most of our inside midfielders. Also, ANB & Ah Chee.

We have more players who can play multiple positions.
