Review Round 3, 2026 vs West Coast

Should have played Wines instead of Brodie.

We drafted the worst of the 3 Duursma brothers, West Coast have the best one.

One incident was the difference on the scoreboard and summed up the difference on the day.

Waterman's contested mark, on a flat out lead under severe pressure from Jones, 50m out just before the half time siren then goes back and slots it with the wind after the siren, was the difference on the scoreboard. Dont slot that and only kick a point and we win by 3 pts and they don't go into half time on a high and we don't go in on a downer.

Another example of Port giving away a goal or an opportunity for oppo to score a goal in the dying 30 to 60 seconds of a quarter - AGAIN.

But that incident summed up the difference. Waterman took a tough contested mark, whereas both Georgi and Luko dropped 2 semi contested marks each with beautiful passes to them inside 50 and all 4 ocassions when we had the momenteum of the game.

Waterman did it under the highest of heat, our boys wiltered under a lower heat.

Watched the replay thought Brodie wasnt half bad especially for coming on probably the second half of every quarter which is why he was “off the pace” here and there. Still got the in and under ball which we probably needed for the whole game not spurts here and there

Bigger problems include Jacob Wehr a 185cm twig with an amputated right foot.

Lai was pretty good much better than Mead and maybe even Evans so with a couple seasons under his belt he could be a gun
Is there a version of Brodie that is on the pace? Maybe this week was a warm up and next week he is 100x better! Same with Wehr!! Those 2 looked they have never played football before.

Nathan Fyfe has been picked over Brodie 39 times over the last 3 years

Yes Fyfe has been on Freos list the last 3 seasons

Move on from Brodie

Agree the culture has been one big love in with Ken but this is exactly why I would have gone for an outsider.

I'd say we have that with Dew, Collins and the other assistants coming on board. The fact those two are from successful environments is a very good sign in my opinion.

Changing the Hinkley culture is Carr's biggest battle. It's going to take him a season to do that alone.

For brodie today he was used as that pseudo sub, probably injected into the game around the 10-15 min mark of each quarter which is why he struggled. Its not like he was getting caught holding the ball ala watkins first game, brodie simply didnt have the continuity especially in a contested mid battle. Hes probably the worst player to have play in bursts

Wehr on the other hand has had 83,73 and 81% time on ground for his three games and frankly has shown sweet **** all for all of them. Clearly has no right foot, doesnt provide the two way running nor the spreading acceleration prowess of an ideal wingman like karl amon or isaac smith have as reflected by poor pressure acts and tackle stats. Has extraordinarily low metres gained stats for a winger who is meant to be delivering the ball inside 50 getting about 275 metres per game.

Absolutely shows nothing that a Will Lorenz or Christian Moraes wouldnt put up or even put up better stats than Wehr

It has tiddly squat to do with culture.
The list is not good enough.
No coach will make a difference.
No game plan will make a difference
Only thing Carr can and will do is clean this shit out over the next couple of years.

I was surprised because I assumed our midfield had capitulated somewhere in the second or third quarter but they battled all day. The team battled all day.

I thought our issues where leaving a whole swag of goals on the table and West Coast getting a few freebies. We would've won that game by a fair bit if we finished decently.

I also thought we struggled in defence when Ratugolea hurt his knee.

I know this sounds weird but I think Carr will see a lot to work with from this game.

THE GOOD

Butters was awesome but he can't do it himself.
Whitlock was good once again.
The team never really gave up. Played four quarters. Big tick.
Apart from the last few minutes in the second quarter, Burgoyne was good in a new role
Ratugolea was solid in defence.
I thought Lachie Jones was pretty good but that's me.
Durdin keeps on popping up.
I thought Sweet was OK in ruck.
I see a lot in Berry. He does a lot of good and some bad. A bit like Lachie Jones.
Lai was pretty good in his first game.

THE BAD

The midfield at times from stoppage looked very slow especially forward of the ball.
We had a lot of inside types and still lost clearances.
Finishing - dropping easy marks in the F50
Finishing - not kicking straight
The first goal by Bo Allan could've been stopped if Richards didn't squib in the forward line.
Gerogiades is just a bit off this year. He should be killing it.
Mackinley starting to give McEntee vibes.
Luko will have the most made up nicknames this year by far. PUKOTROCIOUS.
A lot of bottom feeders whose skills aren't up to it.
Byrne-Jones must be close to losing his spot.
Crowd seems smaller and quieter.

Goals left on the table [kinda in order]:

1. Berry miss snap directly in front
2. Lukosius miss
3. Georgiades drops easy mark from Butters
4. Wehr drops mark from errant kick from Duursma in F50
5. Richards easy miss from Butters stoppage play brilliance
6. Georgiades miss from Butters from centre clearance
7. Butters should've kicked for goal but misses Mackinley who fumbles after beating his guy to goal - double whammy
8. The Hornet double grab that wasn't paid a mark
9. Sweet missed from 45 out from 50 metre from Harley Reid smashing Butters

They got:

1. the Harley Reid bump ball mark and goal
2. Burgers taking out Duursma - stupid play
3. Lai supposedly holding onto Waterman - dunno

THE UGLY

Skills way down
We're rebuilding and Butters wants to win and unless we turn it around, he's gone.

PLAY OF THE DAY

A bit boring but Durdin keeping it alive near the boundary, receiving and making the right decision to keep running to kick the easy goal. There must've been something better but I can't remember it.

Hardwick should be investigated by the Australian Consumer Affairs Commission for the Latrociois trade, he’s barely worth a 3rd rounder.

Hardwick is fine. Our people should be investigated. Luko is what he is. He’s not different here than he was there.

Can’t upset the little precious kids anymore by saying nasty things.
It’s all positive BS these days.

People who defend that it should be all roses miss the real issue. It’s is not the content, but simply the form. You can still let them know how bad it was, and that they are on notice. You must, actually…

I was being sarcastic. We offered him a long term lucrative contract despite all the clear warning signs, the biggest being a 3 x Premiership winning coach who didn’t rate him.

We rate players like Luko. Looks over substance.

Starting well and then disappearing for the rest of the game happened in the North Melbourne and Glenelg games as well. It’s completely unacceptable to just switch off for 3 straight quarters.

The team in the first quarter showed fight and were clean. I understand fluctuations in form during a game, but how does this not return at all in the 2nd half at any point?

I'm certainly a bit worried about our effort level under Carr. Pressure is about effort. We've spent 5 quarters this year downhill skiing against trash but as soon as the opposition pressure raised a bit, we completely folded. Having a bad list doesn't make experienced, proven players play lazy footy, and we've seen plenty of that in the first 3 weeks.

I fully agree that a lot of this is just a continuation of our culture under Hinkley but it actually seems a little bit worse than that. Where is the new coach bounce? Where is the initial setting of standards?
This to the fury of 1000 suns of course we don’t have the list but the Norf game and this one we should’ve won based on intent and instead it’s like its 2019 swimming n **** all over again

I’m a little concerned tbh

I'm being repetitive about this but I reckon the umpiring has a role to play in this too. In the second quarter, they started calling our short chip-kicks as too short. That meant the recipient was immediately under pressure. It also meant we started having to go longer to make sure the umpires called the mark. The first of these resulted in more rushed kicks and the latter ended up in more kicks to contests. We were also rushed from marks and free kicks by truly bizarre 'play on' calls (one where Mead was literally standing still and there was no hurry up warning).

None of this is to absolve the players and coaches for an abysmal performance after quarter time. We should be able to adapt in those circumstances. However, with a team made up of a lot of inexperienced and/or second-string players, it is more understandable.

Dig deeper
Giving up any extras on top of a first and houston for Lukosius and berry
Trading up for sinn
Trading up for Berry

Last years trade period is only a small piece of the pie

The Houston deal and the circumstances surrounding it could well end up being one of those cataclysmic deals that is spoken of in terms of “that was the moment our world changed”.

Do a serious head coach, GM, and club chairman who aren’t all swanning around like they own the joint while simultaneously subject to constant speculation they’re out the door, make/sanction that deal as it happened?

How on earth did we hold all the cards yet completely fold and give the Pies, Suns and the outgoing and incoming players concerned literally everything they wanted?

Unless Luko in particular pulls his finger out and Richards becomes anything more than a faceless squadbod who could feasibly be replaced by any second round pick in a given year, that deal should see everyone responsible sent to The Hague.
