Far from a given that they won't match. And he's going to be 27.5 years of age at the start of next year. I am not necessarily convinced he fits the age profile they're looking at relative to where the list is currently at in its premiership window timeline.
Would they match though?

Given they aren't offering that much because of their cap space and don't want Bailey earning more than others? If they match, he probably just signs an extension and stays.

28 is too old for where we are at for anyone who isnt a stopgap to prop up the team for leadership like a Luke Hodge brisbane role.

I actually think that is what we need. Its been a very long time since we have had a genuine leader and I think our development suffers for it.

You have to have senior players to support the young guys coming in. It’s the mistake north made, it’s why Melbourne had to rebuild 3 times in a decade, it’s why Richmond and the Eagles can sometimes be competitive and why north appear to have made a step up this year.

But you need the right guys. Whether we have those is another question.
I agree in some ways. But at some point in your list management you need to inject some decent players in the draft.

Geelong are the model, but they got cheap father sons (which gave them extras like Bartel), and leaders that could play well into their 30s.

Brisbane (merger) and Gold Coast academy/father sons.

Hawthorn - priority picks.

When your list is full like that, you can just get the balance of first picks in and occasional trades. And Geelong are seen as a destination club - because of their list benefits, so they get the pick of the gaps in their list.

You give us 3 extra stars, and Hinkley is a super coach with at least 2 premierships.

That’s why I’m gunning for a deliberate tank next year, and taking Nasiah in the pre season draft.

Personally I'm leaning towards tank for tanks sake. The AFL *in us around with the draft concessions means * it, play the system.

Best case scenario IMO, we finish bottom 3, we get a pick inside Cochrane, we bring in free agent Zak Bailey, we get 4 first rounders for Butters. Couple go to Cochrane, and a couple help us with Salopek, Pilot, Rodan.
Tanking next year would get us Nasiah too in the PSD - and St Kilda started this academy mess and war - it’s only fair we take Nasiah

Without Rozee and Sinn and given that Houston has moved on, DBJ as a defender isn’t the worst option.

Means the likes of Berry, Zadow and Durdin (looks like a good trade so far) get minutes.

But I suspect DBJ is on to the way out of the team. I can’t see him in Port’s next proper run at it, but his experience is important now.

Geelong getting the consensus number 1 pick hawkins for a 3rd rounder , then drafting Selwood at 7.

Meanwhile when its ports turn out comes the ceremonial castrating guillotine.

I wonder how much we'd have to pay Pendles to come play for us for a year or two.

If we are wanting to throw some cash and, perhaps, make it harder for other clubs, there are a number of fringe players at the Lions, Suns, Freo and Crows that I would look at.

Offer McAndrew something to make the crows pay more.

Luke Ryan, O’Driscol, Ollie Murphy - could all offer us something.

Bruce Reville is one of the elite inside 50 kicks - regular game time and more money might shake him loose. He is just one of many at the lions that could be looked at. At the very least you make the lions pay more of their cap.

Rogers, Walters (why not throw our hat in the ring), Graham, Davies - plenty here.

Senior player types - Vlaustin, Pendlebury, Maynard, Howe? - not sure if he has any coaching desire or ability, Rampe - some types like this that may be an option for a player/coach type roll.

Perfectly summed up, Georgiades is critical to whitlocks development it allows him the second backmen and allows him to float into contests until his big enough to hold his own.

Also I wouldn't be giving up bergman very easily, his body type is something we dont have alot of where ever you stick him he will compete.
As long as Bergman is in defence

I wouldn't be spending big on Bailey if we lost Butters either. Would rather use the money to keep guys like Georgiades and Whitlock and keep some in the bank for another crack at Nas next year. I'm a big fan of Zac but we've gotta start investing in the draft and our players we already have and want to keep. Nas is a special talent obviously you go after those types but I think Bailey might be a beneficiary of being in a generational team. Good player no doubt but won't move the needle for us.

Still think we should be trying super hard to turn Butters into Nas this year.
I know Butters wont go to Saints, but make it a 3 way trade.
Obviously I want to keep Butters, however I have accepted that he won’t be staying.
Then we play hard for Bailey. If we just lose Butters, zero chance we can convince Bailey to come.
